People often inquire about my favorite Kerouac quote, a task akin to choosing between limbs (or beloved pets). I encountered Kerouac’s work at a young age, mid-teens, diving into “Dharma Bums” thanks to my trail mentor, Dharma, during my inaugural thru-hike on the John Muir Trail. The above quote, nearly three decades old to me, most likely sealed my fate. 175 Mile North Country Trail LASH—DAY SIX: I departed the comforts of the Manistee River, as I tread northward past Headquarters Lake Dam. Today, rain lightly graced my journey, and more is expected tonight. Yet, I welcome it, adequately prepared for any inclimate weather, and I’m eager to test the storm-worthiness of my @durstongear X-mid pro 1 tent. My pace today was leisurely, meandering along the road until reaching the charming enclave of Fife Lake, the cottages & summer homes reminiscent of the A-frame lake houses of New York’s Adirondacks. Having tagged the northernmost stretch of the NCT for this leg of my journey, I stopped for a long lunch, and then I turned southward, intending to explore alternate paths to escape the asphalt as much as possible back to my car. The Ozette triangle is an easy trail with an unforgettable uniqueness. Travelling mostly on boardwalks through the first side of the triangle you get to see marsh and bog lands, then you walk along the beach for the next part of the triangle before diving back into the woods again to finish. Did you know shades of saffron symbolize simplicity, humility, and the renunciation of worldly attachments in many East Asian cultures? For Buddhist, the color saffron is associated with the Dharma, or the teachings of (Big) Buddha. It represents the quest for enlightenment and the path towards liberation from suffering. Saffron also happens to be one of my favorite colors. 175 Mile North Country Trail LASH—DAY FIVE: On day five I found myself on good trail-to-road walk, and back on trail again, rejoining another NCT section overlooking the Manistee River, west of Baxter Bridge SP. As I traversed through early spring blooms along the river, I couldn’t help but notice how much more lush & perfectly manicured the yards and gardens of the small communities/homes I passed along the route were. Thoughts, like clouds above, passed through my mind, as I once again had the entire trail to myself. At one point, I started reflecting on the lessons I’ve *relearned* while hiking next to the Manistee River. On “ego”: just like how water flows along the river bank, life moves, ever shifting, carving its path through the terrain of our “attachments”. It wears away the rough edges and reshapes the landscape until it flows freely and unimpeded. Life lessons are forever in motion, always moving forward, meandering along the winding course of our existence. While striving for that elusive clarity (enlightenment?), it often feels like chasing a fleeting dream, but it’s a journey that unfolds slowly over time. Truthfully, only when we learn to embrace the natural flow of life, navigating its inexplicable twists and turns, will we grow wiser—just like the river. 🙏 In the early evening, I stopped for a break, but feeling invigorated, I ended up doing another five miles for a 35-mile day. Dearest Manistee, You, untamed and eternal, pulse with the very essence of the Earth. Your whispers, soft and secret, carry the melodies of the wilderness beneath the canopy of the moon. In the swirling embrace of your currents, I discover solace and tranquility, a mirror to the turmoil within my soul. Gratitude. 🙏 175 Mile North Country Trail LASH—DAY FOUR: On this fourth day, the Manistee River captured my heart. I surrendered to its allure, even plunging into its icy depths to cleanse away the weariness of four days’ trek of hiker trash funk! Though the days have warmed, the forecast promises a chance of rain, hail, and even snow—a true Michigan spring! I stopped in the small town of Mesik, MI for an early lunch, then a brief road walk to reconnect with the next stretch of the NCT. Even as a LASHER, I tread every roadwalk, for such is the nature of NCT– a mix of wilderness and pavement, each step a testament to the journey I embrace. Yet, as I near journey’s end (I have about 60 miles left) the Manistee’s siren call beckons. It’s hard to resist—its beauty, its charm, so irresistible. 31 miles hiked on this day. My final stop in Valley of Fire State Park was White Domes and its loop trail. Nice hike down the canyon to an old Western movie site for the movie “The Professionals” that was partially filmed in the state park. Then through a slot canyon to get to the other side and hike back up. As I said there is so much to see there and I only scratched the surface. The word “Manistee” is derived from the Ojibwe (Chippewa) word “məníshtəyaa” which roughly translates to “spirit of the woods” or “river mouth islands.” For the Ojibwe, the river was not only culturally significant, linking families & tribal communities together, but also a rich resource and foraging opportunity. Today, the Manistee River is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, as it winds through forests, valleys, and scenic landscapes, shaped by Pleistocene glaciers that advanced and retreated over this portion of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The Manistee River attracts outdoor enthusiasts, including anglers, paddlers, hikers, and nature lovers seeking to explore its pristine waters and surroundings. …and the @northcountrytrail happens to share several scenic miles along the river as part of 120+ miles within the Manistee National Forest. 175 Mile North Country Trail LASH—Day Three: This morning I slept in. It wasn’t until after 8 am that I packed up and started walking. Partly, it’s because I’m back on east coast time, and I’m slimpy tired from doing almost 30 miles on day two. Mid-day I passed Upper River Road TH, where I parked a few days ago and started hitching south. In the parking lot I met a couple of Manistee River Loop Hikers, a trail I’d be linking to in a few days, just beginning their hike. We had a friendly chat, and they had a lot of question about “Elio” my @nashville_pack One of the hikers was also a runner, and had never seen a backpack with hybrid vest straps. I gave the UL gear “elevator pitch”, and talked about the weight distribution advantages of vest-style straps vs. a traditional (uncomfotable) & bulky backpack strap. I’m always happy to talk gear, but I had miles to cover and a river to see! After politely excusing myself, I reorganized & picked up my resupply I stashed, and then I walked back into the woods—alone again. From here I’ll take the NCT north towards Pere Marquette State Forest, where I’ll make my way back south to my parked car. Onwards! Well done to the Gap Heritage and Tidy Towns Group, for continuing with another phase of restoration work on a section of the heritage wall that runs alongside the Yellowbelly Trail on Annagh Hill. 👏 It’s fantastic to see this historic and impressive wall being restored. The wall was built in the early 1900s by Jack Keegan for payment of ‘6d a perch’. The locations where the stone was hand quarried from the rocky hillside can still be seen. The trail remains open to the public and you can still enjoy a walk there and take in the breathtaking views. I hit the trail, before daybreak, eager for the day’s journey. The morning air whispered secrets as I walked, each step a synchronization back to my authentic self. I walked all morning, listening and reacquainting myself with natural sounds. By midday, I found myself amidst a symphony of nature, lying in the dirt, watching trees sway in the brisk breeze, thoughts of Kerouac floated by like the clouds above. As the sun peeked through the canopy, I drifted into a brief nap, warmed by the sun and cradled by the earth. The rest of the afternoon I hiked in absolute solitude, with only the wilderness as a companion. Twenty-seven miles vanished before my feet today. You see the trash strewn all over our beautiful community. Such a shame. This pile was dumped near Zimmerman Park and sat for several days before we stopped to pick it up. In a five-minute stroll along the roadway, we filled a trash bag with cans, bottles, food wrappers, cardboard and car parts. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the litterers joined the Great American Cleanup this Saturday, April 27? Zimmerman Park will be the gathering spot for Billings TrailNet volunteers for the Cleanup from 10 a.m. to noon. Our team of volunteers will pick up trash along the new Skyline Trail. Please, come join our team! If you can’t make it to the Skyline Trail, home base for the event organizer, Bright n’ Beautiful Billings, is the Billings Community Center, 260 N. 23 St. starting at 8:30 a.m. for sign-in and supply pickup. …and I’m back, back, back again, in Michigan, on the North Country Trail for a LASH (Long @ss Section Hike) of 175 miles. “Pure Michigan” seemed like a good place to test out new gear for my upcoming Pangea Traverse section on Iceland, Faroe Islands & British Isles. 175 Mile North Country Trail LASH—Day One: I parked mid-day at Upper River Road TH, and then stuck out my trusty 👍, south towards Freesoil TH. It only took two quick hitches to the town of Wellston, where I met Pat outside his home gardening. We struck up a friendly conversation, and he mentioned he was surprised to see someone like me since not many “homeless” people live in Michigan. Especially, this far away from any real towns. After I cleared up that I’m technically not unhoused (well only part time really) I told him all about the North Country Trail, how it’s a @nationaltrailssystem , a premier hiking route in his home state of Michigan. “That sounds like the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Why would any sane person walk like that?” #embraceTheInsanity After realizing he might have to put me up for the night if no one picked me up, Pat was kind enough to drive me the rest of the way to the TH, and then I started walking north. Thanks, Pat! I know you won’t see this since as you colorfully put it: “the internet is the devils work”—I really enjoyed our time together—in particular your endearing curmudgeony way! A quick 10 miles for the day, and I found the perfect spot to set up my new @durstongear X-mid Pro 1. This will be the first time (in the wild) I get to lay my head down in my new (zero mortgage) “home.” Homeless I am not…in fact, I have five homes, thank you very much, sir… 😂 Alright then…show me what you got @northcountrytrail !!! Another fun map and compass course in the books. Today brought us to People’s State Forest where trillium, blue skies and hints of spring provided a great location for the workshop. During the session we went over the basics of a map and a compass, used the two to navigate on/off trail and used them on their own. We also covered topics such as declination, topo scale, 7.5 min USGS quad maps, a formula to plan outings more efficiently and much more.
