#MarkYourCalendars Join the @libraryofva tomorrow as they celebrate the discovery and acquisition of a special collection of books that contain thousands of detailed entries documenting grave markers erected in almost every cemetery in central Virginia over six decades. The collection is expected to be a valuable source for information as grave markers provide historical data for families, researchers, and genealogists. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served and sample volumes of the collection will be on display. Cotton Hill Cemetery, also known as Shady Grove Cemetery. Polk County. This is an amazing cemetery reclamation project, and it circles back to a church (Shady Grove) that I’ve photographed before but I didn’t know this history at the time. In 2019 the cemetery was forgotten, overgrown with trees, and turned into a swamp from the overflowing creek behind it. Polk County resident J.R. Forsyth decided to clean it up. He enlisted friends and contacted the church, which still owns the property. Volunteers pitched in and so much Polk County Black history was uncovered. Many graves of workers from the Aragon Mill and the original foundation of Shady Grove church, which sat at the site from 1915 until 1946 when it was moved due to flooding. The cemetery still floods. I’ll post a photo of the flooded section later, but it’s definitely remembered and taken care of now. I believe over 180 graves, dating back to the 1880s, have been located using dowsing rods. #georgiacemeteries #cemeterypreservation #blackhistory #aragonga

If you have visited Warrensville West Cemetery or attended one of our cemetery tours, you probably noticed many gravestones in less than perfect condition. Age, weather, and a shifting landscape have led to many leaning or toppled stones. We’re thrilled that 57 gravestones are being restored by a professional following the Warrensville West Historic Preservation Master Plan, which was developed in partnership with @shakerheights and @shakerlibrary. Repost @shakerheights // This week a consultant and contractor for the City will start a project to restore 57 gravestones at Warrensville West Cemetery. In addition, the City’s grounds crew will be restoring native meadowlands in certain sections of the cemetery. Both these projects are recommended in the Warrensville West Historic Preservation Master Plan, which the City developed together with @shakerlibrary and @shakerhistory. #YourCityatWork

Back to things in San Francisco that used to be cemeteries (and let’s be honest, still are, regardless of what people claim). Lincoln Park Golf Course was the first in the American West built in 1902. Named for its position at the end of the Lincoln Highway, another first, the golf course was also City Cemetery. Keep in mind burials had only been banned in the city the previous year. City Cemetery was the potters field, where the city’s indigent dead were buried. More do than that though it was a multicultural haven, with immigrants from across the globe memorializing their dead. Its removal was a joke. some historians estimate that there is many 20,000 bodies still buried under the golf course and surrounding areas. Only two monuments remain, mostly because of their size. The Kong Chow temple was a gathering place for the city’s growing Chinese population, and after a few years of burial their bones would be repatriated to China. Westerners were co fused and often extremely judgmental of their burial practices. Ironically, as the largest monument it still stands today, as a memorial for those who lost their final resting place and chance for repatriation. You can visit if you are brave enough to dodge the golfers playing on either side of you. #cemetery #cemeteries #cemeteriesofinstagram #cemeteriesandgraveyards #tombwithaview #formercemetery #removedcemetery #cemeterypreservation #chineseburialground #chineseburialsite #kongchowtemple #citycemeterysanfrancisco #sanfranciscocemeterylostcemeteries #lostcemeteriesofsanfrancisco #taphophilesofinstagram #taphophilia #taphophile #cemeteryshots #cemeteryscapes #cemeterywandering #cemeteryloversclub #cemetery_photography #cemetery_lovers #cemetery_shots #cemeterylifestyle #cemeterylandscapes #cemeteryphoto

Emma Harrison Little, whose grave is tucked cozily under a tree in the Hayden Cemetery, died a tragic death that serves as a reminder of our mortality. She suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage on June 30, 1922, while she was eating dinner with her family and died 80 minutes later. Her two children, Harrison and Kathryn, were only five and seven years old when their mother died. She and her husband, William (or Willis) Little were well-respected citizens of Oak Creek. William worked at the Pinnacle Mine as the “fire boss,” a position that examined mines for any potential dangers or hazards—usually the first person to enter a mine before any other workers enter for their shift. Emma, pictured here in the second photo, came from a ranching family in the Elkhead area, and unfortunately I couldn’t find much information about her life, other than that she joined the Red Cross in 1917. Searching for information about Emma was also interesting because I discovered a couple of sources that also listed her name as Katherine/Catherine, which was very likely her middle name and would make sense as the inspiration for her daughter’s name. Grave photo: May 21, 2022 Newspapers: The Oak Creek Times, June 22, 1917; The Steamboat Pilot, July 5, 1922; The Routt County Sentinel, July 7, 1922. Other: Ancestry.com

The Laurel Hill Memorial to Commemorate California Pioneers at Cypress Lawn in Colma. Laurel Hill, San Francisco’s rural cemetery was the last to fully remove from the city. Like Holy Cross the remains of 35,000 San Franciscans are buried in a mass grave of underground vaults. The marble of Father Time is an interesting and welcome addition to an otherwise plain monument though the language on the tablets is quite lovely. The fight of some citizens against removal was exceptional and you can see the effort they made to make a very difficult and undesirable outcome as respectful as possible. #cemetery #cemetery_lovers #cemetery_photography #cemeteryshots #cemeteryscapes #cemeterywandering #cemeteryloversclub #cemeteryloversofinstagram #cemeterylifestyle #tombwithaview #laurelhillcemetery #lostcemeteries #lostcemeteriesofsanfrancisco #colma #colmacalifornia #cemeteryremoval #cemeterypreservation #cemeteryscultpture #fathertime #marblesculpture #taphophilesofinstagram #taphophile #taphophilia

Delpha and Belle Day were twin girls, born in Deep Creek in July 1896, who both died before either of them could reach six months of age. No other information about them is available, sadly, not even their names once on a single federal census. All that remains to remember their existence is this broken but lovely monument in the Elk Mountain Cemetery. George and Mary Elizabeth Day apparently lived in multiple areas of Routt County but largely in the Deep Creek area, where George had a ranch and later opened a general store of some kind. The couple had another daughter, Pearl Opal Day, who was born in 1898. In 1913 the Day family moved back to “their old home in North Carolina to reside,” where George bought a farm for $10,000—he expressed desires to move back to Routt County because he “preferred to buck snow than wade mud,” but never did. The Days later moved to Cleveland, Tennessee, where they lived until Mary’s death in 1922 from pneumonia. It is unclear what happened to George Day after that, but he moved back to North Carolina where he died in 1936. Commissioners at work! Commissioner Kali-Ahset Amen and Commissioner Elinor Thompson visited the historic St. Peter's Cemetery in West Baltimore City on February 10. Commissioners learned about the current efforts of cemetery guardian Jennifer Thompson and her team to clear vegetation overgrowth and complete the ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey of this 20-acre cemetery's substantial African American section. You may have heard about these efforts on the local news recently! Jennifer Thompson and her team have partnered with Towson University on the GPR survey to find her relatives and hopefully identify many other unmarked graves, so she can memorialize them. #cemeterypreservation #africanamericanheritage #africanamericancemeteries #mcaahc #preservation #westbaltimore #baltimore #maryland

This is my third post concerning Panteon Hidalgo Cemetery. But it's the first one to feature the #TexasHistoricalMarker I wrote for the cemetery. One day, I'd like to see subject markers like these in Spanish. Then, the history the marker showcases will be truly authentic in representing the people. Description of images: a #PublicHistorian enjoys a frozen mocha in front of the Panteon Hidalgo Cemetery. It is a ca. 1920 cemetery for Mexicans living in #NewBraunfelsTX. Many of the markings are handcrafted and feature rustic and Catholic-inspired artistry. The cemetery represents the working class people who helped build #NewBraunfels. 📸: @freya66 #MarkerMonday #HistorianInRepose #ExtraShotOfHistory #PublicHistory #LocalHistory #CemeteryPreservation #TexasHistory #Preservation #HistoricPreservation #CoffeePlease

I was doing research for my day job today—which has nothing to do with cemeteries—when I made an exciting discovery: photos of a funeral taking place in the Hahn’s Peak Cemetery more than a century ago. The oldest established burial ground in Routt County, the Hahn’s Peak Cemetery is the final resting place for many pioneers, including Michael Condelin, an Irish immigrant who came to the area for its mining riches in 1882. Condelin was dubbed both “the old sinner” and “the sage of Hahn’s Peak” in newspapers of the day, and the number of people carrying his casket on a toboggan through the snow indicates that he was a popular figure in the area—and a wealthy one. In 1907, some years after Condelin and others had found gold in their mining ventures, stockholders visited the area and agreed to pay Condelin and his colleague $25,000 for 520 acres of “placer ground” in “that golden district.” Condelin then purchased the Hahn’s Peak sawmill in full from his business partner, with the newspaper reporting that he “deserves to make bushels of money in anything he undertakes.” After suffering from paralysis for more than two years, Michael Condelin died at 2 a.m. on March 13, 1911, and was buried seven days later in the snow. But “no funeral services will be held” besides the burial, leaving us only to wonder what exactly was taking place in these old and valuable photographs. On top of that, an excerpt from his will was published two weeks after his death, in which there is mention of his dog, Togo (who I hope is one of the dogs in the photo), being given to a friend.

It now has lead spacers to help preserve the setting putty & compound. Andy & Susie Price - Riverview Cemetery Leveled the bas. Die was lifted and reset with new lead spacers, setting putty, and setting compound. The cemetery will add topsoil & grass seed to even out the slope around the base and prevent erosion. This small gravestone enveloped in snow belongs to John H. Elston, “a man who was held in high regard.” His wife Mollette’s resting place is right next to John’s, but her grave is unmarked. In a quintessential story of the spirit of western adventure, John Elston came west to Colorado around 1875 when he was just 18 years old and worked in mining in both Breckenridge and Routt County. Mollette was born around 1866 to French parents, and the 1910 U.S. Census lists her birthplace as “at sea.” By 1910 she had been married to John for seven years, but it’s curious that the census notes she had six children at the time, as she and John had no children of their own. Both came to unfortunate and sad respective ends. John died in 1917 of apparent heart disease alone in his bed, found eventually by neighbors “who thought it strange that he had not been seen for a week.” The proprietor of several rooming house properties in Steamboat, Mollette rented out rooms to interested customers and dwellers while maintaining the family’s ranch at Cow Creek. A few years after John’s death she moved to Denver, where she also worked in boarding, and it is alleged that while there she received some unhappy news from a fortune teller and consequently took her own life on April 11, 1921. Photo: April 9, 2023. Newspapers: The Routt County Sentinel, June 1, 1917; May 23, 1919; April 15, 1921. The Steamboat Pilot, June 6, 1917. Other: 1910 U.S. Federal Census, Routt County.

Today I’ve found a cemetery story that the Routt County Sentinel called “the most shocking case of juvenile depravity ever committed,” on a small family ranch 14 miles west of Oak Creek. Catharine (or Kathryn/Kate) Mudra was murdered on January 8,1921, by her 15-year-old daughter, Anna, who shot her twice in the back while she was in bed, and then dragged her body outside and buried it under two feet of manure. The body wasn’t discovered for three weeks. When confronted about the body, Anna repeatedly gave several differing and suspicious stories behind the killing, but one theme was that she was angry at her mother for not allowing her to play with a neighbor boy of a different ethnicity. She forced two of her younger siblings to help her either with the murder or with hiding her mother’s body. Anna was tested for her physical and mental conditions and was deemed “undeveloped mentally, due to lack of education and to environment.” She was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to the State Industrial School for Girls, from which she made an escape attempt in September 1923 but was recaptured disguised as a boy after 10 days on the run. She was released in 1926. Catharine was 42 years old when she died. Her husband, Frank, became a U.S. citizen in 1914, but there is no mention of her achieving the same. Aside from a brief legal notice about a mortgage, there are no other newspaper articles about her. Anna is also buried in the Oak Creek Cemetery.

“One reason to consider cleaning a headstone is to remove soiling and pollutants which can accelerate the deterioration of the stone. Other reasons might include cleaning locally significant stones, or stones located at the cemetery entrance to help gain public support for additional cemetery improvements. Cleaning stones covered in heavy biological growth will reveal text important to local historians and genealogists. One or more of these reasons may lead to a decision to clean the stone.” #BrewingChemistry event is Tuesday, February 20th, 6:00 PM for a Dutch-treat dinner, Presentation at 7:00 PM 🪦 🎤Bringing Cemeteries to Life by Thomas Henthorn, Ph.D., University of Michigan-Flint 📍O’Mara’s Irish Restaurant | 2555 Twelve Mile Rd, Berkley, MI 48072 Event details & link to RSVP: https://detroitacs.org/meetinginfo.php?id=92&ts=1706302706 #detroitacs #detacs #chemistry #chemist #chemistryindetroit #science #scienceindetroit #yccacs #yccdet #brewingchem #brewingchemistry #brewchem #umflint #universityofmichigan #goblue #cemetery #cemeteryscapes #cemeterypreservation #preservation #history #humanitieschampion #michigan #michiganhumanities #anthropology #sciencecafé

“Soiling and staining of cemetery gravestones, monuments, markers, and statuary can result from soil splashing, pollution, rusting bolts or other metal features, bird deposits, and berries or sap dropping onto the stone. Biological growth, such as algae, lichen, or moss, can cover the surface, cause the stone to decay, and make reading the stone difficult.” Source: National Park Service #BrewingChemistry event is Tuesday, February 20th, 6:00 PM for a Dutch-treat dinner, Presentation at 7:00 PM 🪦 🎤Bringing Cemeteries to Life by Thomas Henthorn, Ph.D., University of Michigan-Flint 📍O’Mara’s Irish Restaurant | 2555 Twelve Mile Rd, Berkley, MI 48072 Event details: https://detroitacs.org/meetinginfo.php?id=92&ts=1706302706 #detroitacs #detacs #chemistry #chemist #chemistryindetroit #science #scienceindetroit #yccacs #yccdet #brewingchem #brewingchemistry #brewchem #umflint #universityofmichigan #goblue #cemetery #cemeteryscapes #cemeterypreservation #preservation #history #humanitieschampion #michigan #michiganhumanities #anthropology #sciencecafé

A member of an established Deep Creek family, Alfred Desting “Fred” Buckner died August 4, 1937, after the gun he was cleaning accidentally discharged and fired into his left hand and up his arm. In a blow to his family, his death came only a few months after the death of his father, Desting Campbell Buckner, who was also buried in the Deep Creek Cemetery. His family seemes to have been quite popular and social in not only the Deep Creek community but also in Clark and Steamboat, where they traveled and made social calls to friends and family frequently. In August 1922 Fred happened to be driving near Fly Gulch when he came across a Scripps-Booth car completely engulfed in flames after the battery short-circuited. Fred and the owner of the car, Bill Cross, tried to smother the flames but “the gas tank did not explode but burned instead, making it increasingly difficult to quench the flames.” Only a few years later Fred was the victim of fire and flame himself, when he was injured in a coal mine explosion near Rio Blanco in October 1926. He was temporarily blinded in the explosion and suffered from bruising and burns on his skin, and spent months recovering with his wife, Inez, at the home of her mother in Steamboat Springs. Fred and his wife divorced a few years later. (Their son, George Albert Buckner, died from injuries sustained in the Solomon Islands during World War II.) He lived on the family’s land in Deep Creek until the late 1920s, when he moved to Dubois, Wyoming, where he was living at the time of his death. Grave photo: June 18, 2023. Last Friday, FPAN's Cemetery Resource Protection Training (CRPT) Conference 2024 participants had the opportunity to get hands-on experience in various cemetery preservation practices, including cleaning headstones, utilizing a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and watching headstones get reset at Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville, FL. With its first burial recorded in 1856, Evergreen Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Gainesville - in fact, it's one of the oldest cemeteries in Florida's Alachua County! For cleaning headstones, participants used water and a biological cleaning solution called "D/2." In addition, participants were shown how to use GPR to see any anomalies in the ground that may indicate unmarked burial sites. Our Central Region Public Archaeologist, Nigel, was also able to show everyone how to reset headstones using a tripod (and a helping set of hands). We hope that our participants can go forward using these practices to help preserve and honor Florida's cemeteries! If you are interested in historic cemetery management and preservation, more information on FPAN's CRPT workshop can be found via the 🔗 in our bio! . . @uwf @uwf_cassh @uwf_gaa @fpancentral @fpanwestcentral #FPAN #artifact #history #pubarch #scicomm #flhistory #flarchaeology #cemetery #flcemetery #cemeterypreservation #archaeology
