We've been looking into the history of our coal yard here in Shrewsbury, and found this great photo from 1971. These steel hoppers are still in use today. Coal is filled from the top and then bagged up into 50kg open top sacks by our drivers and other coal merchants who collect their coal from us. Ready to be delivered out to customers. Each hopper is for a different type of coal - most customers we speak to are surprised by how many different types there are. Over the years the product choice has reduced but there are still over 10 varieties that we offer alone. All offering a certain quality required for all the different appliances using solid fuel. Solid rock is what saved this Ukrainian Church, the sole surviving church in Centralia. Solid rock vs coal was discovered underneath this church during a survey at the time it was almost demolished with the rest of the town. To this day it is kept preserved and sometimes used by its dedicated parishioners. Let’s take a trip down memory lane… these are some pictures I took at the infamous abandoned town of Centralia, PA back in 2019. Centralia was a small coal mining town, with the first two mines opening up in 1856. Operations would continue on for nearly a century until 1962 when a devastating fire occurred, igniting the coal mines below. As the fire worsened, and the environmental damage was evident, residents began relocating from the town in droves. By 1992, the town was condemned entirely, and a majority of buildings were demolished. As of 2020, only 5 residents remain in the town. The Centralia coal fire continues to burn, and will continue to do so for over 200 years, releasing toxic gas and smoke from the many open holes and cracks in the ground. As you can see from my pictures, the most iconic landmark at Centralia was the “graffiti highway”, originally Route 61; unfortunately, this road has since been demolished and razed. Very few, if any, buildings remain.
