A week away unplugged. ❤️ Children thrive on being in nature, their imaginations explode, and nothing can replace the memories created when we spend time with those we love. 👦 My son is 10 years old — he does not have a phone, he does not have an iPad, he does not play online games and he most certainly has no access to social media. ✅ He has given me permission to post this because he can see that he cannot be identified. 🤔 When I asked him if I could post a family photo on my private Facebook, he said: 💬“No Mummy because even if your account is private, nothing is private online”. This is the result of education that began at an early age. He knows about the risks online; he knows there are private photos posted online, and he knows the name for what those images are called. He knows there are predators that can deceive children, and he knows that many of his classmates are interested in little else but gaming. He knows why we are so careful with his use of the internet. He knows because he knows what happened to his sister. Anytime he wants to look up something, my husband and I supervise him. 😊 When you look at these images, you see an innocent child, full of vitality, who is embracing his childhood. 😞 When I look at these images, I can't help but remember my daughter who, at the age of 9 was the same — full of life and vitality. And yet only a few months later she talked to someone at a friend’s house on an online game — someone who she thought was another 9-year-old little girl. She did not talk to the person once; she talked to the person a few times. She stopped when the person told her to never tell anyone what they had been doing on the game or else they would both be arrested. 😢 And we lost her, she literally lost her vitality, was diagnosed with clinical depression, and medicated for six months — ALL at the age of 9. Last week I attended a webinar hosted by In Hope entitled ‘Predators Hiding in Plain Sight’. I would like to share a few things that the presenter shared. ⚠️ Content of interest to predators (COITP) included: - Children in swimsuits - Pageantry photos - Children doing gymnastics - Children in diapers - Children in the swimming pool - Back to school photos - PLUS everyday family photos ‼️ Predators are driving minors to self-produce content on: - In gaming environments, which are often described as the 'modern day playground'. - Mainstream social media — predators are posting and browsing content of interest, finding like-minded individuals to trade CSAM with, and finding victims to move off-site to messenger platforms. - Messenger apps — including encrypted platforms to communicate with victims. ⛔️ When a predator contacts a child, they will try to lure the child to an encrypted messenger platform. Algorithms play a role in recommending more content, i.e., if a predator has searched for ‘girl gymnastics’, the algorithm will push more of the same type of content. Predators can find other like-minded individuals in the comments section. In live streaming, predators will often ask a child to: - Do a handstand - Pout at the camera - Blow a bubble gum - Can you draw with your feet? - Put the camera at this angle ‼️‼️ I cannot reiterate how important it is to have any social media account set to PRIVATE. ❌ NEVER share images of your children on public accounts. Keep in mind that once you post an image, you lose control over it. ❌ Please do not include photos of your children in your profile photo. 🙏 Please supervise your children online. ❌ Children should NEVER use devices in private spaces. ❌ Children should NEVER communicate online with anyone they do not know in the ‘real’ world.

❓What did my son want to know at bedtime? 👲Mummy, how to predators trick children and how do they find them? 👩 Where do most children spend their time online? On games and social media. Sometimes the bad people pretend to be younger than they are, and trick a child by chatting to them and making friends with them. The child then feels they are friends with the person. The person then asks the child to send private pictures and when they do, they tell them they will send them to the child's parents and friends if they don't send more. Sometimes, for example, an older man will pretend to be a teenage girl. Sometimes they will offer gaming money to children to get them to send pictures. 👲(big eyes) but don't the children know they are not talking to another child? Surely they can hear in their voice? 👩 most of the time they are just typing in messages. They learn how children talk so they can easily pretend. 👲Can you tell me any real-life examples? 👩I gave him two examples and then said, at the end of the day, children should never talk to anyone they do not know in the real world, and they should never ever send private photos. He then asked about what happened to his sister. I told him briefly that: - she did not share any private pictures but that the person asked her to do inappropriate things with her character in the game. - she thought the person was another little girl who was the same age as she was. - the person told her they would both go to jail if she told anyone. - she was very sad for two years. - when she told me I hugged her, that I was not angry with her and that I was proud of her for telling me. - I had called the police, and they warned me that predators were on all the games and asked me to tell her that she was innocent. I continued with, 👩 sometimes teenagers and children do get tricked. If ever a friend of yours one day tells you they have done something they shouldn't have and don't know what to do because they can't tell their parents, I will always help them. 🤔Why I won’t be drawn into the ‘trust’ debate with my child. Let me start by saying that I understand this post may provoke some disagreement. I would like to clarify that I absolutely believe that trust is an integral part of any relationship. Having said that, I believe that this should be the case when both parties are of equal maturity. What do I mean by that? Well, as adults, we have all had enough life experience to know what is expected of us in a relationship. We understand the definition of trust, which is a ‘firm belief in the reliability, truth, or ability of someone or something’. So, I can’t help but wonder if we are being fair to our children if we expect the same of them? 🧠With underdeveloped frontal lobes, we should expect and be prepared for them to make impulsive foolish decisions at times and be there to guide them. At the risk of sounding controversial, I do not use the word trust in any of my conversations with my children. I know how important it is to feel trusted in a relationship. I also can imagine that it would feel deeply shameful if one were to break that trust and that it may take a long time to rebuild the trust lost. 🥺I’m grateful I didn’t tell my daughter when she was little that I ‘trusted’ her. I can only imagine how much more difficult it would have made her devastating experience when she encountered an online predator. She never for a moment had to feel she had ‘broken’ my trust. Gone against my advice — yes — but not 'broken' my trust. She may never have told me if she had felt she had 'broken my trust'. I have had many instances during my son’s adolescence where I could have used the word. 🥺 It is tempting, when reading some of the posts on this page or in the group, to feel one’s heart sink. To feel as though we have not parented well enough, and to possibly feel ashamed or discouraged by this. The truth is no one can get this entirely ‘right’. The internet, social media, online games — all are relatively new — and we really are the first generation attempting to navigate this with our children. 🥺 Many of us in the field - be it a cyber expert, a cyber educator or, like me, a parent cyber safety consultant and awareness advocate - have been on our own journey to get where we are today. Some through personal experience, some through the experience of friends, and for some through professional experience. I, for one, wish I had known years ago half of what I know today. I put measures of protection in place - parental controls at home and on their devices (which they only received in high school); there were no iPads and gaming devices etc. at home, and I always talked frankly and openly with them. 🙁 When they started high school, I quickly learned, however, that despite the safety measures in place in my home, outside my home became a risky space. This was entirely out of my control. I have always opened my door to friends and have hosted many sleepovers; however, with defined boundaries. When they were younger, I asked for phones to be put out at night, and there was a zero-tolerance for anti-social behaviour. I have been fortunate, therefore, to gain insight into the problems that have arisen both for my own children and for their friends — much of which occurred through social media or gaming. 🥺 Yet despite all my efforts, I still experienced the heartache of feeling like I had 'not done enough' or had not 'protected' them adequately. This journey, I have taken WITH my children - we have navigated the hiccups together. 👌Our children sometimes repeat the same mistakes. This post was sent to me by a parent who gave me permission to share. 👦Zac was 12, and I had hoped he had learned his lesson the last time this happened, but distressingly it happened again. 🎮Since the first incident, I have been vigilant in checking his phone. There is a period each afternoon when I am working, and Zac is home alone with his older brother. He still games, but with limits. 🧐I was recently going through his phone and decided to check the trash bin in his photos. What I found really shocked me. More compromising photos! It was clear when I took a more in-depth look at WhatsApp and Snapchat that he had been lured from the game he was playing to both these apps by the predator, who had proceeded to groom him over a period of several months. At first, Zac was saying no — over and over and over again, but the predator was manipulative and persistent. He eventually offered Zac gaming money and Zac relented. 🙁How do I feel? 😔Upset, disappointed, and angry, but I understand my son is a victim and clearly still does not understand the seriousness of sharing photos. 👮This is what the police told me after I called them in 2016 asking if they published the names of games that predators frequent following my daughter’s disclosure that she had encountered a predator on a child’s online game two years earlier. 🥺The predator had cunningly ensured that she believed he was another 9-year-old little girl. He told her that they would BOTH be arrested if she told anyone. 🧐Do I feel like I had enough conversations with her? No. 🧐Do I feel like I failed to protect her adequately? Yes. I shared her story publicly, with her permission, because I wanted other parents to never think “not my kid’. I wanted parents to understand how easily incidents like hers can happen and are happening to children all over the world daily. ‼️Predators typically lure children off the game to an encrypted chat platform to continue the grooming process. Fortunately, this did not happen in our case. Signs to look out for include: ‼️A change in behaviour — she went from being an outgoing, lively, happy child to a little girl who gave up all her interests and became listless. ‼️A change in appetite — she started to eat noticeably less. ‼️Anxiety — she developed extreme separation anxiety. 🧐Did I get her help when I noticed these changes? Yes. 🧐Did she tell her psychologist about the real reason behind her distress? No. 🧐Did anyone suspect anything had happened online? No — we had all the usual restrictions in place in our home and had had the usual conversations. The incidents (yes, she went back more than once) however occurred at someone else’s home. 🙏Please ensure that the parents of any friend your child visits have similar rules around online safety. ❌NO internet connected devices should ever be used in private spaces i.e., bedroom or bathroom. ‼️Online games are particularly hazardous spaces for our children when it comes to predators. 🤔Can we teach our children to navigate the online world safely? 🚗We’ve all heard the comparison made between the online world and letting your children drive a car. There’s a good reason for it. 🧠First and foremost, we need to remember the brain matures from the back to the front. It takes at least 25 years for the frontal cortex, the executive/judgment centre in the front of the brain, to reach full maturity. The frontal cortex is responsible for decision making, reasoning, problem solving, controlling urges, impulse control, thinking ahead, and planning. 👲Children in primary school are open to learning and therefore cyber safety education is essential, as well as education about protective behaviours, and these conversations must continue for their entire childhood. 🤯BUT their brains are not mature enough to receive this education and navigate the complexities of the online world safely. I did not allow my 8-year-old unsupervised online simply because I understand that his curiosity and impulsivity could easily allow him to make a wrong decision, and the repercussions of this, in my experience, are simply not worth it. 🥺We also need to consider that adolescence is an entirely different phase of a child's development. It is completely normal developmentally for them to be pulling away from us as parents. Adolescence is a time when our children are looking for independence. They may engage in risk-taking behaviour and tend to push the boundaries. I frequently hear from parents who say; “when my child was nine she/he was so good and listened to my rules, but now at 12 or 13 they seem to think they're grown up and don't want to listen”. This is developmentally quite normal and, while not all children are the same, we simply cannot predict the trajectory of adolescence. As a result, parents need to be firmer in the boundaries they set. Be open when talking to them, ensuring you explain why the boundaries you put in place are there. Finally, a message we frequently offer children is; ‘if you experience something negative online, come and tell me’. CONTINUED IN COMMENTS 👇
💻There was a year I spent a fascinating one and a half days attending a conference on “Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD)” and “Problematic Internet (Social Media) Use (PIU)”. 🎮I think it’s important to note that not every child who plays an online game will develop a disorder. Prof Daniel King acknowledged this, but at the same time made a valid point when he said we don’t ignore the suffering of alcoholics and their families just because everyone who drinks doesn’t develop a dependence on alcohol. 🧠What is clear is that the longer we delay, the more time we allow our children’s brains to develop and mature. ⚠️It should also be noted that if you have a child who has a diagnosis of ADHD or Autism, they hare a considerably higher risk of developing Internet Gaming Disorder or Problematic Internet Use. Some tips to consider before allowing gaming: ✅Set time limits on gaming in advance.
