LONDON / OXFORDSHIRE 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 A Complicated Matter by Anne Youngson Rose Dunbar is a daughter of mixed heritage and feels very much at home in Gibraltar. She cares for her mother who suffered life-changing damage after Rose's birth, spending her day in great pain. Rose cares for her. War on mainland Europe has broken out and Gibraltarians are being evacuated, first to Morocco and then to London where Rose, her mother and other members of the community are given lodging in a hotel. The sense of London during the war years is vibrantly brought to life in the careful and thoughtful hands of this author. Rose's heritage means that she is not a shoe-in into London life, even though she is a dual national; much of the story is centred around her finding her place and skills, and understanding the 'new' culture in which she finds herself. She is a quiet and unassuming person, who is naturally drawn to books - she finds access to novels to while away the hours, especially in the bomb shelters. Once her circumstances change, she heads for a job based in Oxfordshire, where she is to work as a secretary to Major Inchbold, an archly plain speaking man who is without his sight. Here she continues to learn more about English society and how she can assimilate and grow as a young woman. This is a rich and slow-paced novel that takes its time to explore the character of Rose in her context of time and place. It can feel quite languorous at times but the quality of prose can make this feel as familiar and comfortable as a pair of well-worn slippers. 📚 Full review via 🔗 in bio 📚 #tripfiction #travelbybook #armchairtravel #triplit #literarytourism #destinationfiction #literarytravel #literarywanderlust #readtheworld #amreading #booksbooksbooks #books #destinationfiction #literature #fiction #travel #armchairtravel #bookrecommendation #traveltheworld #bookpassport #england #anneyoungson #acomplicatedmatter

16/45 #books . Nope. Can we start a petition where the blurb actually reflects the contents inside? I went in thinking it’ll be a lighthearted funny book about a man getting to write a relationship/life column for a newspaper but what I got was so unfunny. Full of ableism, misogyny and racial slurs definitely reflective of the time it was written but not reflective of the type of books I like to read. I need to get better at DNF’ing shit books. . . . . . #amreading #amreadingfiction #bookstagramuk #bookinsta #booksofinstagram #ukbookreviewer #bookreview #readersofinstagram #readersofig #booksof2024 #ukbookstagrammer #thestorygraph #readingchallenge2024

Her father didn’t accept me beacuse I was unemployed. It’s been 4 years. Now I’m a magistrate in her husband’s area. I was on duty when I saw her with a little princess. She smiled at me. We talked. The little princess was named Fariha ( means Happinesses) just as we decided to name our baby if it becomes a girl. Sometimes I wonder how beautiful my life would become if she was mine✨ #amwriting #writerslife #writingcommunity #authorlife #writerscommunity #writing #amediting #writersofinstagram #authorsofinstagram #indieauthor #writers #writingtips #amreading #writersofig #writersblock #author #bookstagram #writersnetwork #bookworm #creativewriting #fiction #writerscorner #writerswrite #writersblock #nanowrimo #selfpublishing #writinginspiration #writersofinsta #poetry #writingprompts

🔥 THE MIDNIGHT FEAST 🔥 ‘The Midnight Feast’ by Lucy Foley is a dark, twisty, eerie tale set on the opening weekend of a luxury deconstructed hotel with glamorous accommodations dotted around the natural Dorset coastal landscape surrounding a grand romantic Manor House… While the setting sounds idyllic, a midsummer heatwave, unhappy locals, mysterious characters and old grudges mean that the midnight feast at the culmination of the celebrations is set to be anything but perfect! As the book begins, we are introduced to a number of intriguing characters - lone traveller Bella who was drawn to The Manor like a moth to a flame, visionary Francesca who has turned her inheritance into what she hopes is tourism gold, architect Owen who designed the dreamy buildings for his dream woman and dishwasher Eddie who is torn between town loyalty and his paycheck. Soon flames of tension burst from the pages and old secrets are spilled like fresh blood. The multiple perspectives make this novel compelling, and the shifting timelines from the solstice night revelry to the police investigation the morning after and the reminiscence of a pivotal summer long ago mean that the reader is drip-fed information and connections until the clever tapestry of the story weaves together. I admire how Foley gave distinct voices to her narrators and gave us deep insight into our motivations, and how she used the sweltering heat to ratchet up the stakes. The book also has a taste of the supernatural, with local legends merging with contemporary revenge to great effect. This was a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me - even though it started a little slow, I was totally gripped by about 40% and binged the rest, eager to piece everything together and hopefully see just desserts served. I’d highly recommend to fans of Lucy Foley’s previous works, Charlotte Vassell’s savage takedowns of the privileged and Catherine Cooper’s addictive destination thrillers. I received an advance Digital Review Copy of this book from the publisher @harpercollinsuk via @netgalley. The opinions expressed in this review are my own. 🗓️ RELEASE DATE: 6 June 2024 🏷️ #netgalley #arcreview #lucyfoley #themidnightfeast

One of the best books I've read this year. Give Killing Jericho a vote! Posted @withregram • @whusseyauthor 🚨I am THRILLED to announce that KILLING JERICHO is longlisted for the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2024! Public voting is open now - PLEASE give Scott Jericho a vote! It would mean the world to see crime fiction’s first Traveller detective in with a shot! Voting link in my bio!!! 🙏 This nomination means so much to me as the longlisted authors are selected by a panel of crime writing authors, agents, editors, reviewers, members of the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival Programming Committee, and representatives from T&R Theakston Ltd, Daily Express, and Waterstones. So to be nominated by my peers and these fab representatives is just mindblowing! As I say, please do give Killing Jericho a vote if you can. Representation matters, and it would be great to see crime fiction’s first gay Traveller detective in the mix for the shortlist! 🕵️‍♂️🏳️‍🌈🎡🎪🔪 #TheakstonsAwards #TheakstonsCrime #KillingJericho #crimefiction #bookstagram #thriller #mystery #bookworm #booklover #murdermystery #booksofinstagram #thrillerbooks #noir #bookstagrammer #crimenovel #bookish #waterstones #readersofinstagram #readcrimefiction #suspense #booknerd #crimebooks #bloodyscotland #amreading #newbook #killingjericho #williamhussey #jerichosdead #killingjericho

A delightful Book Club afternoon with extra special treats including two kinds of gingerbread to go with this month’s book AFTER THE FOREST by @kellinthewoods. We also had gorgeous handmade gingerbread men as mascots. The novel is a fairytale for adults, set in the Black Forest, fifteen years after Hansel and Gretel were lost in the woods. (You get the gingerbread theme?!) The general consensus of this book, was ‘it’s not something I’d normally read… but I really liked it.’ Kell’s writing is beautiful and lyrical. The story is so clever and enchanting. As you quickly turn the pages of the book, you’re immersed in another time, another world. There’s magic and mystery, witchcraft and wonderment. This one is for fans of historical, fantasy or someone who just craves something a little different. Extra special is that one of our book club members, Tara, went to school with Kell, and the Year 4 teacher the author thanks in her acknowledgments, is Tara’s mother, Vicki (a special guest at our gathering today). Another perfect book club afternoon! There are some great podcast interviews with Kell if you want to hear more about this amazing book - her inspiration, her process and what’s coming next! In Defence of the Act by Effie Black 💊 Sharply witty 💊 Conversational first person narrator 💊 Suicide, abuse and disordered eating This book was magic. I still don’t know how the author did it but they managed to write a book about the most difficult topics (yes, plural) without passing on the emotional cost to the reader. Every chapter of this book touches on some kind of trauma but somehow, the narrator puts you so much at ease, you’re not left emotionally drained after reading. Yes, it was touching and made me cry at the end but it wasn’t heavy throughout. There was light and shade. I can’t review this book and not mention the font. At first glance it’s vile but in practice I found it really easy to read. I was hoping the publisher would include a section about why they’d used it in the back but they didn’t unfortunately so this unusual choice remains a mystery. I’m gutted this didn’t make the Women’s Prize short list; it was my top read of the long list. It did something I’ve never seen before, handling dark themes with a delicate balance of humour, compassion, reality and humanity. #bookstagram #readingforwellbeing #bookishlove #bookstagramuk #bookstagramwales #amreading #bookreview #bookrecommendation #bookstagramreadsthewomensprize #instagramreadsthewomensprize #womensprize #womensprizeforfiction

Hello everyone! today i finished my book and it about this new student in class called Mia who is deaf and there is this another person in class called Edie and she is also disabled and whenever she walks she wobbles and she talked slowly. Edie felt bad because nobody was being friends with her and she is new so Edie said that she would be friends with her to her parents. So the next day she went up to her and carefully said hello and do you want to be friends?and Mia replied with “just because we are both disabled doesn’t mean that we have to be friends”. And Edie said that she just wanted to be friends with you and it had nothing to do with being disabled. And Mia went out crying and Edie didn’t mean to make her cry or anything. It turned out that Mia was from America and had a brother and one time they all went to the beach and they where playing football with Edie’s other friend called Oscar and Mia’s brother and Edie was just sitting down on the chairs and mia’s brother was thanking Edie by talking to Mia yesterday and Edie was the only one that said hello to her and later on they turn to friends. #WorldBookDay. #BookLovers. #ReadingIsFun. #Bookstagram. #AmReading. #Bookworm. #BookNerd

Hello!Booklovers! 📚 Finished 『A Man With One of Those Faces』(Dublin Trilogy (Publication order) #1) by Caimh McDonnell ☆☆☆.8 📝Synopsis The first time somebody tried to kill him was an accident. The second time was deliberate. Now Paul Mulchrone finds himself on the run with nobody to turn to except a nurse who has read one-too-many crime novels and a renegade copper with a penchant for violence. Together they must solve one of the most notorious crimes in Irish history...or else they’ll be history. (source: Goodreads) 💖Thoughts ・This is the 1st book in the series!! I finally read this! ・I thought the setting of the protagonist, who has a face that is too ordinary and is involved in a case because of it, was very unique and interesting! Maybe no one who can't be the protagonist of a story!😆✨ ・Our protagonist Paul, and the other characters all left a lasting impression on us. They are all trying their best to live their lives, but they are all somehow not getting along, and I kind of like that. I especially like the old lady Dorothy.😊💚 ・It was interesting to see how Paul, who is more of an apathetic type, was influenced by Brigitte, who was trying hard to solve the problem!💞 ・It was a combination of hard-boiled and cozy. It was also interesting to see the various elements of mystery in the process of solving the puzzle! There was also a sense of adventure, making me thrilled!🔍💓 ・I have not read many Irish mystery books, but I would like to read more books set in Ireland!👀✨ ・Can’t wait to read the next book!📚 Enjoy your cozy reading journey🎵 #読了 #読書好きな人と繋がりたい #本のある暮らし #小説 #東京創元社 #創元推理文庫 #平凡すぎて殺される #ミステリ #青木悦子 #amreading #booklovers #dublintrilogy #Ireland #dublin #caimhmcdonnell #mysterynovels #cozymystery #cozymysterylover #bookstagram #japan #japanese

At 4 AM the other night, I was still engrossed in my book, fully aware I’d be paying for it at work the next day. But honestly, it felt incredible to fall in love with reading all over again! 📚❤️ After being caught in a reading slump since the start of the year, I revisited an old favorite of mine. There’s something deeply comforting about returning to familiar pages and characters. If you’re ever in a slump, I highly recommend going back to those favourite reads! They can help rekindle our love for reading and remind us why we first fell for books. Also, if you haven’t yet read Jean M. Auel’s Earth’s Children series, you’re missing out! Incredible research has gone into these books and they've been blended so well with some of the most imaginative storytelling. Plus, it always leads me to wonder what my animal token would be. Probably a lazy cat, not gonna lie... 🐈‍⬛ Who else has a go-to favorite book to shake off a reading slump? 👀📚 #Bookstagram #ReadersOfInstagram #BookLover #Bookworm #BookAddict #AmReading #BookRecommendations #BookNerd #Bibliophile #ReadingSlump #IGReads #Bookstagrammer #InstaBook #Bookish #BookCommunity

I went to the @bridgewaterhall this week to see @elizabeth_gilbert_writer I've been a fan of Big Magic for a long time and her TED Talk 'Your Elusive Creative Genius' is a go to for me - I'll watch it again today. I wasn't sure what she would talk about - would it be ideas? Writing? Eat, Pray, Love? I've listed to and watched her for a while, and my instinct was that she would talk about creative practise. She did, and much more. The central message for me was purpose. Elizabeth talked about how we are encouraged to 'have a purpose' and that purpose is usually directed towards an end goal of monetisation. Side-gigs. Turn your hobby into money. She told a packed audience that we were allowed to just do something without there being an end goal, and that was fine. In fact, that would make us less anxious. Less needy. Less self-conscious. Where we would compare ourselves with others less, and not worry about Amazon ranking so much. To things jumped out at me. The first was value. I am someone who believes I should be paid for the work I do. But I also know the huge value in flow and focus I get from writing. Can we have both? I think we can. As long as the difference is in our awareness, we can separate the commercial act of sending out a book and it being sold from the whole process it takes to create it. That brings me from the second elephant in the room, attachment. We live in a capitalist society that encourages us to attach to money - and, of course, we have to live. Yet many spiritual teachings, and particularly Buddhism, say that attachment leads to suffering. As a psychologist, I have looked at attachment and mindfulness. I have also looked at classical conditioning and habit forming. We need to attach to things and form habits around them as human beings. But when they bring suffering in the form of anxiety, then it's time to take a closer look. I have much more to say about this, but for now I'm starting on my next novel with flow and focus in mind rather than how it will sell - onwards ❤️📚

In celebration of my new book coming out in just two days time, I've put the first ebook in the series on S📚A📚L📚E for a few days. So, for this week only, you can get The Problem With Dead People for just $2.99 if you're in the States (usually $4.99), or £1.99 in the UK (usually £3.99) It's on sale everywhere else too, of course, at roughly 40-50% off the regular price, depending on how strange the sale price looked and the royalty brackets on the Zon (I do like getting 70% of the ticket price so much more that 35%, don't you?) Anyhoo, as we all know, I'm not great at remembering to do sales, so who knows when another one will roll around, making this an absolutely brilliant time to add a historical mystery set in 1920s England with extra ghosts to your Kindle 😊 Already got it? Firstly, thank you so much, you wonderful human bean, you. Secondly, if you know someone else you might enjoy it, please share this post with them so they can join in with Lucas and his ghostly adventures too. Thankies 😘 P.S. Book review time! 📚 I’ve had this on my bookshelf for ages and I’ve been waiting for the right time to start it. I always find that if I have that attitude I never get round to reading it 🤦🏻‍♀️ This book has the level of adventure that reminds me of the sort of creativity books had to me when I was growing up. Sounds a bit sad I know. Since reading a lot of fantasy it sometimes seems a little formulaic to me but this book really was unpredictable. The concept of the Tower of Babel and the different floors and the surreal worldbuilding was superb. Senlin was a great character who was awkward and booksmart but a fish out of water. I really liked his character development too. I’ve heard the next book is not as good 🤷🏻‍♀️ not sure how much truth there is to it but I’ll definitely give it a go. There’s something very Gulliver Travelsque about this book. I would say the setting is quite Victorian/steam punk inspired. Personally I think it’s one of the most innotative books I’ve read for some time and I was thankful for the escapism it provided me. I might actually read ‘Babel’ further down the line as I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. I’m currently reading a Dowry of Blood now and it’s certainly giving me Anne Rice vibes, maybe some vampire books might be next to feature on my TBS list? 🤔 #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookrecommendations #booklover #booknerd #bookaddict #booksbooksbooks #book #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookcommunity #bookblogger #bookblog #read #reading #readmore #amreading #amreadingfantasy #fantasy #fantasybooks #scifi #scifibooks #fantasyworld #worldbuilding #steampunk #adventurebooks #sundayreading #review #readersofig

Penulis: @todayis.molen Penerbit: @id.skuad Rate: 4/5 -----🌙⭐🌙----- Setelah baca novel ini, yaitu diary dari Iyan dan Danan, aku menghela nafas panjang. Terus ngerasa apa yaa...hampa gitu, sedih, kecewa, marah, campur jadi satu. Kenapa? Alih alih mengeluh, Danan justru merelakan segalanya demi adik adiknya. TAPI TERNYATA???? Malah mkin jadi sakit hatinya hiksss😭 Kak molen keren banget bisa nulis novel angst kayak begini, aku mau sungkem dulu🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️ #reviewbukuAkad #novel #bookslovers #book #read #romance #booklove #fiction #story #amreading #novelwriting #reading #library #books #booklovers #libros #bookphotography #bookstagram #reader #love #booklover #luv

The Bookaholics’ Insight The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner Reviewed by @theglowingcorner_ A story that unfolds in two different timelines n eras & how their paths cross. Very interesting read & a lot of strong women characters of different ages, & even stronger spirits. And how wonderful researching history can be if one is inclined towards it . I loved the way the author kept oscillating between the two different timelines & kept the story connected. As I read the book I kept visualising it all that is the USP of the author that she can bring alive the story & it was really interesting right up to the very end. A little mystery, magic, spooky & quite adventurous . A 4.5/5 from me #BookReview #BookRecommendation #ReadersFavorite #MustRead #BookLovers #AmReading #BookAddict #PageTurner #Bookworm

Currently reading: Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens. After visiting his house, where he sat and wrote Oliver Twist at his desk, I felt I should read it. Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. I think I’m too lowbrow for Woolf. I found this hard to follow and not engaging enough to want me to turn the next page. If anyone can recommend a more accessible Woolf I’ll give it a go otherwise this is my first and last! #amreading #virginiawoolf

Happy Sunday! What are you guys currently reading? Here's my #coffeeandcurrentlyreading - though since I don't really drink coffee, I chose tea instead. 😉 Thanks for the tag, @proudtobeabookaholic 💙💙 I'm halfway through this urban fantasy series by Hailey Edwards called Foundling and it's been interesting! I am also currently listening to Brian Klaas' Corruptible as an audiobook. And I'm partway through yet another shifter romance by Shelley Laurenston, too. I kinda fell down a rabbit hole there lol. I have a load of laundry in the washing machine and I'm thinking of playing a little Subnautica in a bit. All in to have a chill Sunday! 😊 #bookstagram #teaandbooks #booksandtea #bookseries #bookstagramchallenge #currentlyreading #amreading #amreadingfantasy #ebook #kirjagram #kirjagramsuomi #luettavana #luenparhaillaan #ekirjat #kirjasarja #kirjagramhaaste

Do you have any book quotes that live rent free in your head? I used to be an English teacher for over a decade so my brain is like a filing cabinet of Literary quotes, but I much prefer romance ones 🤣 Anyway, this Kalen Knox quote always makes me chuckle whenever anyone brings it up and I decided it was time to have merch made with this saying and super cute graphic. What quotes have stayed with you? We Are All Completely Besides Ourselves - This is a book I’ve had on my shelf for literal years. So long that I put it on my 24 in 24 list and I’m finally getting around to reading it. I remember a friend telling me once she wanted to throw the book across the room at a certain point, so I’m very excited to get into it! 💛 Q: what is one book that’s been on your shelf for FAR too long?? #currentlyreading #amreading #wearellcompletelybesideourselves #karenjoyfowler #books #bookstagram #reader #reading

You’ve probably noticed by now that my books, at least my first two, take place in the late 1990s to early 2000s. ‘Why?’ You might ask. A few reasons come to mind… The first and more obvious reason is that the storylines in these books are largely shaped by themes that only work with the historical events of the time (especially my first novel, Words for Anna). On a more personal level – I was a teenager in the late 90s/early 2000s and this inevitably brings all the wonderful memories that generally accompany our youth. I remember the pop culture of the time fondly – the music and the films, and I know (or have at least researched) the relevant history. On a practical level, it feels like technology moves at such a rapid pace in our current time, that a novel written today may already feel dated once it’s published two years from now, not to mention holding up for decades to come. But let’s be honest – who isn’t exhausted at the mere sight of the 50 personal emails that come through in a single Monday morning alone? Just like I won’t typically subject my characters to a story ending they’ve been dreading, I’m also not about to infiltrate their daily routines with digital clutter…. Time for a mini rant... One thing that annoys me about many contemporary fantasies is how there has to be an explanation for “Why Magic Doesn’t Work Anymore,” since obviously (sarcasm) there isn’t ✨magic✨around anymore. 🙄 I get it. Really. It’s an interesting concept to play with, and I’d like to do it myself sometime. But it just feels so limiting to say that magic isn’t in the world currently. Our world IS magical — it only takes opening your eyes to see it! And I think that’s where the difference between Then and Now lies. Maybe people of the past simply had their eyes open in different ways. And yes, that perspective shift would be hard to write well. Or.... maybe the ✨magic✨ in the fantasy world IS actually so very different that we definitely do not have anything like it today (or ever 😅). That’s valid too. Like I said, I have plans to write something like that. 🧚🏽‍♂️ It still feels like there's a missed opportunity to create a really complex world that’s truer to reality while still being fantastical. I think it would potentially make a more nuanced and insightful story to explore why people miss the magic that really is in the world. Like, what if there really are fairies and magicians, not in a hidden dimension but not visible because most people are so firmly convinced that they can’t exist? Our real world is so materialist, not willing to believe in things that can’t be explained, that characters who simply refuse to see the magic around them makes a lot of sense. 🧚🏽‍♂️ Anyway... What do you think? 🧚🏽‍♂️ #bookstagram #books #fantasy #fantasyreads #fantasywriter #fantasybooks #UrbanFantasy #fantasytropes #readersofinstagram #ReadingCommunity #reader #amreading #readerrant #bookrant #readersofinstagram #ReadingCommunity #reader #readerproblems #writerslife #writing #amwritingfantasy

« There is a moment in every flirtation when both parties realize that the stares are so intense that no words are needed to announce what is about to happen.
