On the day after Christmas in 1862, 38 Dakota men were hanged under order of President Abraham Lincoln. The hangings and convictions of the Dakota 38 resulted from the aftermath of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 in southwest Minnesota. In addition to the 38 men hanged the day after Christmas, there were terrible injustices committed against 265 others in the form of military convictions and inhuman injustices to more than 3,000 Dakota people who were held captive, then forced to march west out of Minnesota. The Dakota also faced terrible racism, one white settler historically quoting, “Let them eat grass. #sioux #38sioux #dakotatribe #abrahamlincoln #indigenous #minnesota #nativehistory

Minnesota is returning ownership of a state park to a Dakota tribe. This is the first time a state park has been transferred back to any Indigenous tribe in the state. ⁣ ⁣ Indigenous communities rarely win in conflicts over land. The chairperson of the Upper Sioux Community has been asking Minnesota to return the land to his people for 18 years. ⁣ ⁣ The U.S. government took the land from the Dakota tribe 160 years ago, after a war between one faction of Dakota and U.S. settler-colonists. Thirty-eight Dakota men were executed after the war. A federal complex where supplies were withheld from Indigenous people to starve them to death is on the land. ⁣ ⁣ The U.S. federal government has never returned land from a national park to Indigenous people. However, four national parks are co-managed by Indigenous communities and the government: Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Grand Portage National Monument and Big Cypress National Preserve. ⁣ ⁣ …⁣ Producer: Dikembe Wilkins⁣ ⁣ #Indigenous #Minnesota #UpperSiouxAgencyPark #UpperSiouxCommunity #DakotaTribe #Dakota

🎎Council of Dolls Book Tour 🎎 Thank you, Partner @bibliolifestyle @marinerbooks  #bibliolifestyle #acouncilofdolls by #monasusanpower is out August 8, 2023 aka out now This book sounds so beautiful and moving. I love books where one item ties stories throughout timelines together and this one seems just so stunning. Did you have dolls growing up? Any that were a comfort to you? I had one called floppy that got lost on a vacation and my life was never the same. SYNOPSIS From the mid-century metropolis of Chicago to the windswept ancestral lands of the Dakota people, to the bleak and brutal Indian boarding schools, A Council of Dolls is the story of three women, told in part through the stories of the dolls they carried…. Sissy, born 1961: Sissy’s relationship with her beautiful and volatile mother is difficult, even dangerous, but her life is also filled with beautiful things, including a new Christmas present, a doll called Ethel. Ethel whispers advice and kindness in Sissy’s ear, and in one especially terrifying moment, maybe even saves Sissy’s life. Lillian, born 1925: Born in her ancestral lands in a time of terrible change, Lillian clings to her sister, Blanche, and her doll, Mae. When the sisters are forced to attend an “Indian school” far from their home, Blanche refuses to be cowed by the school’s abusive nuns. But when tragedy strikes the sisters, the doll Mae finds her way to defend the girls.   Cora, born 1888: Though she was born into the brutal legacy of the “Indian Wars,” Cora isn’t afraid of the white men who remove her to a school across the country to be “civilized.” When teachers burn her beloved buckskin and beaded doll Winona, Cora discovers that the spirit of Winona may not be entirely lost… A modern masterpiece, A Council of Dolls is gorgeous, quietly devastating, and ultimately hopeful, shining a light on the echoing damage wrought by Indian boarding schools, and the historical massacres of Indigenous people. With stunning prose, Mona Susan Power weaves a spell of love and healing that comes alive on the page.

Have you ever seen a tribal skateboard deck? Niki Pico, (Ma Na Hap Be Winga) was born in 1980 and is a Hocak and Dakhóta self taught artist from Saint Paul, MN. She has been creating art since childhood primarily working with acrylic paint and inks. This deck is titled "Red Horizon" and is inspired by Dakhóta geometric beadwork designs. Indigenous art is not often seen or available in most mainstream skate art graphics and is the style of art Niki wanted on a skateboard. The design was lined out entirely by hand using a ruler and graphite before adding acrylic paint. Niki is one of our selected 2023 artists and her work is now on display now at the Angel De Cora Museum and Research Center! #tribalart #nativeartist #hochunk #dakotatribe #indigenousart #nativeart #tribalartist #skateboard #skateboarddecks #skateboarddeck #skateboarddeckart #skateboarddeckdesign #skateboarddeckdesigns #skateboardart

Harvesters recently met with Christian leaders from the Dakota Tribe, who represent three Sioux groups: the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota. There are strong believers among them, and one young Native American pastor named Chris expressed during our Harvesters presentation that the Holy Spirit told him not to doubt that they could plant a new church every year! Chris, like most Native American pastors, has limited formal training, but he follows his calling to shepherd the flock of God. We are excited to see what the Lord is going to do through these beautiful people! #dakotatribe #dakota #discipleship #pastoraltraining #gospel #evangelism #churchplanting

Towering above the waves of the Maumee River, large grain silos marked with bright visions of the region’s first farmers were celebrated Saturday as the Glass City River Wall mural was christened with rhythms, dance, and prayers. “This city will never be the same,” Christina Kasper, the project manager of the Glass City River Wall mural, remarked through tears. Nearly 3,000 gallons of paint were used to create the largest mural in the United States, with three portraits over 100 feet tall and a length equal to three football fields. The heart of the project centered around honoring, “...the first farmers of this area, so obviously, that's the American Indians who were here first, right,” said Jeremy Turner, a member of the Shawnee tribe. Mr. Turner’s son, Orontondi Greyhat, 9, was the model for the child portrait on the mural. “I really want folks to understand that our communities are still alive and well today,” Mr. Turner said before turning over the microphone to his son, who said he felt, “happy and happy,” about the completed mural. I hope you learn things from these upcoming podcasts I have lined up for you, as well as escape whatever may be happening in your life. Yours in historical facts and memes, Courtney The Dakota 38 subject is a dark historical part of US history. The execution of 38 East Dakota tribesman on December 26, 1862 is the largest mass execution in this country's history, and was signed off by Lincoln. How did this happen? Like many things, the breaking of a promise, or a treaty. I also enjoyed seeing Native American travelers come to pay homage and saw quite a few explain the sculpture to their children. Dignity is located on the south side of I-90 in South Dakota. She is at the last stop before crossing the Missouri if you are heading west. This was also a nice rest area to sit and have lunch. There’s a lot of history related to Lewis and Clark and they have a little museum area regarding that. The view here is also lovely. #SouthDakota #Dakotas #DakotaTribe #Lakota #LakotaTribe #NativeAmerican #America #Tribal #Roadside #PublicArt #Quilt #Sculpture #SculptureArt #MissouriRiver #I90 #RoadsideAmerica #Silver #Blue #AtlasObscura #LewisAndClark #Roadtrip #Wander #WanderLust #Roam #Beauty #Beautiful

Day 23 of the Book Tour and my travels brought me through Badlands National Park where beauty surrounded me and new friends made me smile (ride safe my two wheel brothers!) The day brought prairie dogs galore, incredible history (along with bonus Dancing with Wolves memorabilia) at 1800 Town, and the majestic Dignity statue! WOW!!! With many beeps and waves and people reaching out to let me know they spotted me, I’ve had so many moments where I just looked up, smiled, and was overwhelmed with gratitude knowing I was on the path I was meant to travel. Appreciation of beauty, history, and special connections, is what makes the journey more fulfilling and memorable. The people? Well, that’s where it’s at! You can travel the world, but if you don’t stop to smile at, meet, and chat with those who share the road with you, you’ve missed half the adventure. #brokenlittlebeliever #visits #southdakota #badlandsnationalpark #1800town #dignitystatue #lakota #dakotatribe #siouxfalls #rvlife #author #makingconnections #bikelife #sturgis #bikerally #newfriends #ridesafe #twowheels #respect #peace #purpose #nocoincidences #rideon #newrelease #book #followthejourney #findyourself #connect #godblessamerica #americathebeautiful @simplyshanie @thelookupgirl
