The Circle by Mรฉtis author Katherena Vermette drew me in wholeheartedly, the way I knew it would. It was our April selection for @indigenousreadingcircle The Break and The Strangers are the companion novels which are both also beloved by me. All 3 titles are told through multiple points of view and in reading this non-sequential trilogy, we get to know these families and the characters surrounding them. We see how theyโre changed by events out of their control, how their bonds tie them together. I yearn to read more of this world. Vermette writes in a way that always keeps my interest piqued while resonating with the deepest parts of myself. The city of Winnipeg, where I was born and raised, is not only the setting but a character itself in every novel. While reading The Circle I could almost feel the heat, antsy for the pull of the Forks and the Red River in the summertime. The Circle delves into the effects of gang violence, colonialism, the foster care system and how through it all we as Indigenous people are not tragic (Miigwech Lee Maracle.) Even if our homelands are occupied, even if we carry traumaโwe are not tragic and we carry on with our beautiful lives full of beautiful people. Ceremony and our homeland always there to welcome us when we are ready. Vermette also touches on how sacred spaces often gender people immediately and thereโs often no inclusion for LGBTQ2S when it comes to protocols such as ribbon skirts, moon time teachings etc. When I saw this mural (Two-Spirit People are Sacred) at Sunshine House (third photo) I thought it was beautiful and the description moving.
