Could this be the most intrepid team pic ever 😂 Filming Pika for the Cold Ep of #mammals was one of the most exciting shoots i have ever been on and we were supported by just the most fantastic team. The trip started with a 17 day quarantine to enter the yukon, then patiently waiting weather windows to get out on the ice. The helicopter dropped us off atop 500m of ice on the largest ice field in the world outside of the poles for us to be completely self sufficient for 21 days. We had 9 weather days and nailed the sequence in 11. Even getting out was hard work, a short weather window left the kit stranded on the glacier and @tomparry93 left in whitehorse on his own to wait for its recovery. Even after getting back to the UK we had 14 more days to quarantine bringing the door to door to 52 days. So much hard work from everyone came into making this sequence: @fatamorganaphoto whose MSc research on these Pika was his foothold into the industry. His passion for the wild places of the yukon and his connections help to bring this sequence together let alone his incredible cinematography. @tomparry93 negotiating all the permits and access and driving the creative vision @maxdlsmith for bringing the hay bundles and sky gardens to life @skookumbackcountryyukon for getting us up and down the mountain safely each day, feeding us delicious meals and keeping us on our toes The fantastic team at @horizonhelicoptersyukon for getting us on and off the ice safely @klemenmali_mountainguide for stepping in to help us with some mountain safety So much goes into bringing such a short story to your screens - more behind the scenes to come #mammals #earthonlocation #wildlifefilmmaker

In celebration of Earth Day, I’m posting an image produced in the early part of my career. The expansion of Redwood National Park was being considered. Nestled among several existing California State Parks, the park would protect old growth redwoods, including the tallest trees on Earth, as well as wild rivers and 40 miles of Northern California coastline. I was one of the three photographers hired to create images for a book on the area that featured beautiful redwood groves but also areas that had been clearcut. The contrast was quite stark. A female walrus and her calf hauling out on an ice floe In my capacity as a polar guide, I have been to the high Arctic archipelago many times before, but never that early in the season. It blew my mind. I will be posting a day-by-day story over the next few days. Stay tuned! On Easter Monday - at -26°C! - I embarked on snowmobile tour with a small group from @basecampexplorer. Our base was the Nordenskiöld Lodge, located in the breathtaking landscape of inner Billefjorden. Over four days we covered 415 kilometers, through valleys and mountain ranges, across glaciers and sea ice. Despite the cold throughout the trip and some challenging weather conditions the last day, we returned to Longyearbyen in one piece - and very happy. After a few days' break, it was time to get to work! Together with @robertw.gilmore, I co-led a trip on @rvkinfish for @naturalworldsafaris as part of the J2NE (Journey to Nature's Edge) project.
