The brush cuckoo is found in northern and eastern Australia, the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Malaysia, and other islands to the north of Australia. In Australia, it is known to inhabit a range of environments including rainforests, rainforest edges, mangrove forests, secondary forests, and plantations. The brush cuckoo is a brood parasite. Its eggs are polymorphic, meaning females lay specific egg types for specific hosts. In Australia, females lay three types of egg depending on their major host in the relevant region of their distribution. Brood parasitism is an evolutionary strategy that relieves the parasitic parents from the investment of rearing young or building nests for the young by getting the host to raise their young for them. #museummonday Let’s talk about what makes a museum. While in Melbourne recently, I attended several exhibitions that are considered “museum” experiences. While they have some traditional elements of a museum, i.e., objects on display, the majority of the visit is spent interacting with or watching digital media. This was true of the BBC Earth Experience at the Convention Centre (next door to the Lume, which specialises in this type of experience). It would be easy to miss much of what’s on offer at this exhibition as you walk into the main space, which is dominated by screens with a document running on a continuous loop. You are encouraged to get comfortable and watch the footage as they are sprawled all over the space. The film runs for around an hour, and so once you’re done, it would be easy to forget there were still some other elements to explore as these are located on the far side of the open space. The exit is off the main space, so if you were to simply leave, there is nothing stopping you from realise, you’d missed the interactive exhibit section. This exhibition is based on the story of the seven continents and is narrated by David Attenborough. Between the cinematography and the well-established presentation of David Attenborough this is a great video however it did tend to move towards the morbid in several instances, which given it is a family experience, I thought could have been slightly different. Overall, though, this was a great experience, and I’m glad I got to see it before it closed at the end of April. Thermal images of the White-winged Vampire Bat filmed in Trinidad for BBC's Mammals. We were the first team to ever film these rare and cute little critters in the wild. Thanks to the excellent knowledge of the legendary @iere_nation we found a great spot on in rural Trinidad, on the edge of a property, belonging to the kindest of local families, where these bats would fly in most nights to drink the blood of their chickens. With @howisharry leading the team and the expertise of camera op @skipswildlife already in the field I joined the team for the last couple of weeks to shoot some thermal images on the Selex Superhawk. These bats are often feared despite their preferred prey being birds and this camera allowed us to capture the bats targeting the chickens exposed feet whilst they slept. It was an intense yet rewarding night shoot with heaps of learning about one of my new favourite mammals. 🆔 Malayan White-lipped Frog (Chalcorana labialis) in the family Ranidae (True Frogs), also known as the Copper-cheeked frog. These little frogs are found near streams on rocks and vegetation. Generally found across the Malaysian Peninsula. This Malayan White-lipped Frog was seen near a stream on our overnight stay in Gunung Leuser National Park, Bukit Lawang Sumatra, beside the beautiful Bahorok River. Humans can choose what they eat, but animals can't. We consume for enjoyment, while they do it to stay alive. Cruelty to animals alone should be enough reason to ditch meat. Just think, killing innocent creatures just for fun should make us stop and think. And if that's not enough, think about the planet and how we're messing it up with climate change. So, next time you're about to dig into some meat, maybe take a moment to think about it. If you can't do it out of kindness, do it out of common sense. Benji’s community allotment! 💚🌱 ‘I’ve grown radishes, tomatoes, runner beans, carrots, sweetcorn, and punmpkins from seeds I collected last year! We’ve already planted a whole bed of potatoes, and we’re going to get more of the seedlings out this weekend, so I hope we get loads of produce!’💚 ‘There’s so much wildlife here, I’ve seen foxes, so many slow worms, and even deer!’ 💚 . Hello 👋☺️Hope you’ve had a lovely week! We’ve been quiet on here because the last few weeks when we’ve had a little more dry weather we’ve been working all hours down at the community allotment! . You might know that when we started last year our whole plot was completely overgrown. The brambles and nettles were about a metre high, and to make space for vegetable beds and dig the soil has been a really big job! Benji has been absolutely brilliant and has worked for 6-7 hours at a time digging and working really hard! . Last year we cultivated about a third of the space, this year we’ve cleared another third, and made several more beds. . We’ve left areas for wildlife, have a wonderful bramble edge, and have been really careful to garden around the pollinating plants, so we have an allotment overflowing with forget me knots at the moment! We’re hoping to add a pond and more pollinator friendly plants later in the year. . We have observed some really good examples of child led learning over the past week. Pics1 &2: “Look Liz! I’ve found a shoot!” We examined a small shoot growing from the ground and discussed where it might have come from and what it might grow into. Pics 3&4: One child was very interested in the density of the stones and could recognise which ones were flint. We tested their density by placing them over a phone torch to see if they would glow! Pics 4&5: A child was very excited to find a large feather and ran to the bird watching area to find the bird book to help identify which bird it came from. It really doesn’t get better than this. While is odd given it’s remained relatively stable in the North Island. A few factors may be at play. Firstly, the varied nature of the South Island. Canterbury and parts of Southland have experienced significant deforestation which reduces the habitat suitable for Kereru. Additionally Kereru breeding seems linked with the climate. In the North island Kereru have a great abundance & variety of fruit which allows them to bred year round and raise more chicks. It seems likely that this better diet allows north island populations to better replace mortality, while southern Kereru which only breed at select times of the year & have access to lesser food resources do not. This may explain the increase of Kereru in our cities. Initiatives to replant gardens with more native trees and control pests in urban environments may be allowing greater migration of Kereru into our suburban environments. April 2024 Roundup 14 books- 4 Non-fiction, 2 graphic novels and a mixed bag of fiction- audio, digital and physical. This month’s #Ducktales reading challenge prompt was Non-Fiction. I enjoyed all of the non-fiction I read and they were all so different, my favourite was “I’m not afraid of looking into the rifles” but found it a hard read. I also wonder how many of those experiences are being relived in places like Ukraine, Palestine, Sudan. We haven’t come very far in the last century. In my fiction I finally ventured into Val McDermid and I’ve already ordered the next one from the library… happy to have another author to binge read! The biggest change this month is that almost all of my books have come from @falkirklibraries - on Libby and from my local library. I’ve enjoyed them but it’s not helping my TBR mountain. The phrase “curiosity killed the Kea” is commonplace among many rural South Island communities, serving as a testament to the fierce intelligence of our alpine-dwelling parrot. Yet, the more we learn about Kea, the more surprising their habits become. It has recently been discovered that Kea are capable of using “adaptive tooling.” Although they don’t frequently use tools in the wild, they have been observed making use of them in certain circumstances. For instance, Kea have been seen moving road cones, which slows down traffic, though this behavior is likely more playful than anything else. However, more recently, Kea have been observed using tools for feeding. One such example comes from areas where stoat trapping occurs. Stoat traps are often baited with eggs, and Kea have been observed using sticks to “spring” the traps and raid the eggs. This is fascinating, as captive Kea have been witnessed using tools, but it confirms that in the wild, Kea also gravitate towards tool use. WILD HORSES OUT NOW My new book, Wild Horses, is officially published today after two and a half years of photographing equines up and down the United Kingdom. Horse’s have had a massive impact throughout my life — easing my anxiety during my early years, providing a much needed escape from school in the form of equine therapy, to being the muse for a major photographic project. Whenever life has taken me off track, animals have comforted me, and horses have been a big part of that. I guess I have come full circle with this project, photographing the animals that offered me the escape I so desperately needed during those dark days in 2012. It has been so special to explore their lives, in the fields of Suffolk, the mountains of North Wales and amongst the trees of the New Forest over the past twenty-four months. In many ways, it has been as much a journey of self- healing and self-exploration as it has been about photographing the horses — I have given it my everything; it is not easy to undertake a project of this magnitude, especially when I am so tough on myself and the roots of the project were anchored in such difficult days. I am proud to have shot this project entirely on @nikoneurope #Z9 — it allowed me to capture every beautiful detail in front me.
