Lectured at Harvard University for the first time 🥺♥️ and my dream came true. Like many people here, Harvard was probably the dream school we wanted to attend and I was blessed with a redirection. After being waitlisted for undergrad then eventually rejected, Harvard was one of those schools that I saw myself coming back to in the future. I always knew that it was not meant to be but perhaps in the future. Fast forward almost 7 years later and I was awarded @harvardcchange climate creator on the rise with @piqueaction !!! Many people tell me I have an odd career in digital media tying in my passion for science, art, and education. And I say, it is. Doing this work is weird, I still don’t know sometimes how to describe it but what this has allowed me to create new relationships with people in the space. It’s trash day! A once every 45-days affair in my household. Happy Earth Day weekend! I have a challenge for you, where can you reduce your film plastic consumption? Not because any one person’s actions out weight corporate activity, but because this shift in YOUR intentions matters. It matters to you and our collective consciousness. YOU MATTER! To update my trash story: I this is my household trash since March 10. My third trash day of the year. I use @repurpose 3-gallon small bin bags which are plant-based biofilm, aka bio-plastic. The trick is no wet items into the bags. I use my @getlomi composting appliance to turn all my food waste into soil. (She’s running rn in fact.) And I recycle everything else. I focus on the @grownyc_brooklyn for my produce. I buy things in paper over plastic and bulk whenever I can. Film plastics are my biggest pet peeve right now. Just like, why?! You know? We did life through the 70’s without everything in plastic and we KNOW how toxic and challenging it is to recycle plus there’s plenty of bioplastic films that are perfect for every plastic application… so let’s end (or 95% reduce leaving room for applications I may not be aware of) film plastics already! Alllll the single-use plastic water bottles and caps I’ve been collecting since I returned from Italy on my walks and bike rides through NYC. Most of them came from my neighborhood in Greenpoint and Williamsburg, but some came from midtown, the UWS, and lower Manhattan. Basically everywhere I’ve been for the last few months. I don’t take everything. Like any good art project there are rules. But each one of these plastic bottles were directly in my path within arm’s reach. The town of Santa Caterina di Nardò in Southern Italy inspired this project. It’s called Leave It Better NYC. When I was collecting litter and making art “fine” bundles as @larepubblica called them, and I’m into it, I thought about the producers of all this trash. They collect money and take no responsibility for the aftermath of single-use materials. Not ok! It’s a gift of a project. There’s definitely fears of not being good enough, being told I’m bad or wrong, that comes up but I heal through them with love and take the direction I’m given by these cities I love! I feel a deep clean within in this work. I know it’s my highest best path and I’m so grateful! I’ll have more on this project tomorrow and Saturday, (Earth Day y’all!) for you. Please stay tuned! It’s in the deepest darkest moments of my life that some of my work has been able to bloom. Our lives are attracted to suffering and struggle. Perhaps to learn, relearn, or unlearn experiences that no longer serve us. I’ve always recognized that some of my most successful projects, written works have come when I’m in my deepest darkest moments of life, and I want to celebrate that there is beauty in pain. Over the last few weeks I’ve been traveling and it’s during times of isolation and silence while I’m resting for the upcoming work, is that I often go back and fourth thinking, what if this career doesn’t work? What if I left the environmental movement that is constantly centered on purity and holiness when in reality as humans we are all complex emotional beings. I have sometimes the biggest self doubt whether or not the career I have today is sustainable because it currently relies on unsustainable models but it also brings me joy at the time of not having a structured schedule. I can’t wait to release some projects that I’ve been developing, that have taken some time to execute. I've reminded myself that falling into self-destruction cycles is completely okay. And to reframe them as opportunities to reevaluate life decisions and evaluate what is currently working in my life. Give yourself a hug. The cycle eventually ends. Winter is one of the most dormant seasons that has given me the pain and resolution to look inward. During this time, I am reminded of the hardships I have had to overcome in my life. But is it enough to stop sometimes the vicious cycles of self-destructive behaviors? Probably not! Look, there are times in my career when I beat myself (mentally) of what I am doing and feel that it comes from unresolved resolutions and trauma. I think that winter brings out seasonal depression and sometimes reminds me of moments of isolation that can be brutal. But I have now been taking more actionable steps to my mental health to evaluate life decisions. I've taken the opportunity to recognize in the darkest moments of my life that some of the most beautiful types of work I have been able to produce. It's weird to say this, but something about the hardship allows me to bloom into a newer level of self. They are now opportunities to evaluate, reflect, and speak to yourself. We don't give ourselves grace sometimes for our hardships, and we need to celebrate more of what has passed and plant ourselves closer to the version we are molding ourselves to be, vulnerable, hopeful, and playful. For anyone who sometimes goes through cycles, know you are not alone, and you have every opportunity to take a step back and process everything. It’s trash time again! 🗑️ Last time I took the trash out was the end of November! ✈️ But ok, I was gone for 1 week in @dubai and 1 week and some change in the UK between then and yesterday when I took this bag out. 💦 As usual it’s a 3-gallon @repurpose plant-based film bag. I put it by those black bags for scale. It was raining out, so I put this in a trash receptacle because water dissolves the film. ♻️ Some before and after pictures and videos should paint a pretty full picture for you of my weekly trash situation. I also recycle paper and cardboard as well as glass, metals and hard plastic in accordance with @nycsanitation rules. 🚙 I collect film plastic and drop them off at @duanereadenyc which has a pick-up program for plastic bags. I also collect snack bags for very sporadic drop-offs with @subaru_usa dealers via their @terracycle program. 🍊 and my @getlomi takes care of allllll my food and plant waste plus my compatible disposables like these utensils from @americanair international flight. Lomi also took care of breaking down the plant-fiber cardboard from @seed probiotics that I have a subscription to. 🙏🏼 🥰 So little waste! British artist Tim Knowles brought nature into his artistic process in the most interesting way. For this series of work, he attached a sketch pen to tree branches, and allowed the natural, fluid movements of the trees to create sketches. This work was intended to capture the unique and natural identity of each tree -- the trees are engaged as active participants in his work, creating beautiful “signatures,” to display their identity and the random beauty of nature. Each drawing in this exhibit was presented alongside the “tree drawer,” and also showcased the deep elements of chance and randomness in nature. So inspired and grateful to a friend and fellow permaculture facilitator in Poland #ekopoletko who got the full toolkit. Here is her share translated to English. "The Good, The True & The Beautiful - teaching can be truly aesthetic, aesthetics opens the mind, mind and heart. After 4 months of waiting, I found this surprise: a beautiful teaching set for teaching and designing permaculture from Delvin Solkinson and Grace Solkinson of www.permaculturedesign.earth. This is a pair of teachers and researchers who have taken PDC courses with possibly all of the most interesting permaculture figures in the world, including Bill Mollison, Rosemary Morrow, Geoff Lawton, Looby Macnamara and others. They gathered various exercises, design algorithms and the essence of principles in a synthetic and elegant way. Joyed to have one of my mentors and teachers, permaculture pioneer Aranya review our Permaculture Design Deck for Permaculture Magazine. So grateful to Aranya @learnpermaculture for this uplifting recognition. "It’s such a delight to receive the latest iteration of these beautiful cards, developed over many years by Delvin Solkinson and his core team. They now come in a strong and attractive green box containing a helpful instruction booklet and more cards than ever before. The current deck comprises 10 card subsets, each of which can be used individually or in combination with the others. Six of these sets (Ethics, Attitudes, Frameworks, Design, Tools and Strategies) form the bulk of the deck. Each card invites us to take a specific approach or perspective – and there are so many, some of which were new to me. I particularly appreciated ‘Celebrate’ being added to ‘Evaluate’ and ‘Tweak’ to make ETC. The four smaller sets provide an overview of Looby Macnamara’s ‘Design Web’ anchor points and her ‘7 Ways to Think Differently’, Robin Clayfield’s ‘Vision Tree’ for guiding a group’s process and Susun Weed’s ‘Grounded Gardening’. I suspect that more of these smaller sets may be added over time. The included booklet suggests many ways in which the cards can be used, for teaching, problem solving, designing, focalising, and so on. You can also make up your own ways – the possibilities are almost endless. The cards lend themselves particularly well to a random assembly approach, pointing us towards solutions we may not have otherwise considered. They invite us to explore. The deck combines well with their accompanying hexagonal Permaculture Design Elements Game cards and I’ve also found them to be a great way of expanding the Ideas/Design Principles stack in the Adapt design card game. I love these cards, they’re so versatile. What’s more you can download them for free. Such generosity! However, I personally prefer the feel of real cards in my hands and think they’re more versatile that way. We have a problem; our mainstream culture is raising children with a nature-disconnection. A severe lack of experiential knowledge of the flora and fauna species in the immediate local ecosystem. The lack of understanding that we are part of nature and play a role in the interconnection of everything. For the last century, there has been a trend that ties education to the inside of a building. October’s environmentalist of the month is none other than @pattiegonia An environmentalist drag queen on a mission to build a more inclusive climate movement, Pattie uses their platform to challenge conventional representations of what a climate activist looks like. After conforming to the life everyone wanted him to live for too long, Wyn Wiley (Pattie out of drag) decided to break free of society’s expectations and brought a pair of high-heels with him on a backpacking trip. Global cut flowers industry is worth up to $55 billion USD a year, selling mostly during Mother's Day, Christmas and Valentines. 🌹🌺🌷⚘️🥀 The biggest producers of the cut flowers are Colombia, Ecuador, Sri Lanka and Kenya. Top purchaser is the US. Therefore the key environmental impact is pollution from transportation. Next one is a huge water use and the impact of refrigeration. In 2018, Valentine’s Day flowers grown in Colombia and flown to US airports produced some 360,000 metric tons of CO2, that’s roughly equivalent to 78,000 cars driven for one year. Plus the transportation in trucks to smaller cities and stores. International transport isn’t the only culprit. When grown in cooler climates, flowers need heated greenhouses and more chemicals in order to flourish. In fact, the carbon footprint of flowers grown in cooler countries like the US can be more than 5.5 times greater than that of equatorial countries. Our current model of flower consumption isn’t just harming the planet — it can harm workers as well.
