Keeping the bird theme going with a beautiful Goldfinch. While not particularly a garden bird, being surrounded by fields means I get so see these colourful birds more often in our garden. This shot is just over our fence, with the Goldfinch balancing on the crop of the field. Seeing a flock come through, jumping across the crop, can be a wonderful sight.

Just on the iPhone today but an Ashy Mining Bee, likely a female (correct me if I’m wrong) that had landed on a Choisya. I have never seen an all-black bee, the size of a honey bee before. They are apparently common, live solitary lives and burrow in the soil. The females have more white/grey with a glossy abdomen. It opens your eyes to your surroundings and you learn new things. I dedicate my #EarthDay post to my 2 sweetpeas...you’ve both taught me to slow down and look at the world every day in awe and wonder, and feel all of the joy it brings. We can and must do better for our Earth - to protect and cherish it not only for ourselves, but especially for the young. Over the years, I’ve become increasingly inspired by the passion driving so many young people advocating for our planet, nature, wildlife...their momentum is uplifting and hopeful. I’ve worn many hats during my career...academically as a glacial chronologist (unravelling glacier & climate histories using temperate rainforest in NZ & Arctic flora in Iceland), educationally as the manager of a nationally award-winning schools climate change programme in the UK, more recently as a gardener & garden designer, and of course, as a mum. Nurturing my daughter on her journey to become enthralled by nature and the beauty of our planet, as well as watching her grow to understand that her generation embodies hope for our future, has been a priceless gift - empowering young people with the knowledge, skills and courage to confront the challenges we face from climate change will always be one of the things that I am most proud of. Dippers are unique birds known for their aquatic lifestyle and fascinating behaviour. These birds are typically found near fast-flowing streams and rivers. They prefer clean, unpolluted waterways with rocky bottoms. Dippers are small, stout birds with a thick dark plumage that keeps them warm and buoyant in cold water, as well as a specialized gland that helps waterproof their feathers. This gives Dippers their ability swim underwater in search of insects, small fish and larvae. They can submerge completely and use their wings to propel themselves underwater. They build nests close to water, often behind waterfalls or under bridges and are known for their elaborate nest construction and territorial behaviour. They lay there eggs in grassland which is easily disturbed by walking through areas where there known to be and loss of landscape. There is always so much birdsong around the nature reserve. At the end of February it was easier to spot birds, while the trees were short of foliage. This song thrush was in fine voice. The thrush repeats its song phrases, distinguishing it from other song birds such as blackbirds. In Robert Browning's poem 'Home-Thoughts from Abroad', he states: "That's the wise thrush; he sings each song twice over, Lest you should think he never could recapture The first fine careless rapture!"
