Well, yesterday unfolded quite differently from what we had planned, despite the warnings... Driven by optimism and naivety, we set out for our 171-kilometer loop. The sun initially graced our ride along the stunning coastal route to Güímar. At a classic bakery stop in Güímar, our conversations inevitably turned to the looming weather forecast for El Teide. Our descent into Güímar had already given us glimpses of the volcano, ominously wrapped in dense, dark clouds. We checked various weather apps, seeking clarity on what to expect, though the forecasts were far from reassuring. With a spirit of boldness, we commenced the 55-kilometer climb, keeping our backup plan in mind. Turning back if the weather took a turn for the worse. Twenty kilometers up, the drizzle transformed into steady rain. We paused, checked apps once more, decided to press on anyway, and then were engulfed by thick fog and intermittent showers. We reached the first plateau of El Teide and went down a 6-kilometer descent to El Portillo. Arriving drenched and chilled to the bone, unprepared for these conditions, we sought refuge in a bar. We went in to ask for old newspapers to stuff under our jackets, but then noticed the crackling fireplace. We decided to warm up with coffee and hot chocolate. As we considered braving the weather again, stepping outside revealed pouring rain and a biting 3°C displayed on our Wahoos. Faced with the prospect of a nearly 60-kilometer descent in these treacherous conditions, we opted for safety over valor. It felt too insane to proceed. The bar owner kindly arranged a taxi van back to @aronagranhotel for us. And just before it arrived, two other Dutch cyclists stepped into the bar, also beaten by the day’s harshness. They too needed a ride back to Los Christianos. With some squeezing, we managed to share the taxi ride. It took me some time to come to terms with how our day, and effectively our trip to Tenerife finished. My dad is turning 73 in August, and he truly deserves a huge shoutout as he’s the main reason I got into cycling... Though he doesn’t ride often these days, he’s still out there pedaling. And today, while Ruben, Alexandre and I planned our route, I found myself thinking of him. The route we selected today would likely have been the ride of his life. But for us, it was more meant to be an easy intermezzo. A casual 100 kilometers, including, of course, El Teide. The day’s highlight was the lengthy descent to Chío, quickly followed by a fast, winding road through lush banana plantations down back to sea level. We capped off the afternoon with a late snack type of lunch under the sun on our hotel’s rooftop terrace, complemented by a refreshing dip in the infinity pool. This place is quite something. Tomorrow over breakfast, we’ll chart our next ride. We’re tempted to tackle the Mirador de Cherfe from Masca, but that means committing to an almost 200 km loop. 𝕋𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕗𝕖 - 𝕕𝕒𝕘 𝟚 De tweede dag stond in het teken van Nationaal Park El Teide. El Teide is een slapende vulkaan op Tenerife. Niet alleen de vulkaan zelf is prachtig om te bezoeken, ook het gebied eromheen vonden we heel indrukwekkend. Nationaal Park El Teide beslaat een groot deel van het binnenland van Tenerife en ligt op 2000 meter hoogte. Het landschap is hier dan ook compleet anders dan op de rest van het eiland, heel bijzonder! Foto 1. De weg ernaar toe is zó magisch mooi dat we af en toe moesten stoppen om het vast te leggen en bij stil te staan. En bijna altijd de zee in zicht. Foto 2. Marcel, mijn man, al bijna 30 jaar mijn maatje. Wij schelen tien jaar, dus hij gaat nu al héél hard richting de 60! Zou je niet zeggen toch? Foto 3. In de verte de vulkaan. Deze zie je vanaf bijna elke plek op Tenerife wel ergens aan de horizon. Met zijn 3718 meter is de top het hoogste punt van Spanje en de op twee na hoogste vulkaan ter wereld! Foto 4: Het gehele park is vulkanisch gebied en het oogt af en toe echt als een buitenaardse plek. Het totale nationale park is 19.000 hectare groot. Een enorm gebied, waar we eigenlijk aan één dag niet genoeg hadden. Foto 5: Een überslechte selfie, want check mijn huidskleur dan: overbelicht! Maar... toch issie wel leuk, haha. De laatste keer kwam hij tot uitbarsting in 1909. Maar... in feite zou het wel kunnen! Brrr. Foto 8: Dit filmpje maakte ik aan het begin van de route. Jego wysokość 👑 „El Teide” – szczyt wulkaniczny położony na wyspie Teneryfa (Wyspy Kanaryjskie). Jest to wciąż czynny wulkan. 🌋 Szczyt ten o wysokości 3715 m n.p.m. i wysokości od dna morza około 7500 metrów jest najwyższym szczytem w Hiszpanii 🇪🇸 i najwyższym szczytem na jakiejkolwiek atlantyckiej wyspie. 🏝️ Z uwagi na ochronę parku narodowego, na terenie ktorego znajduje się Teide, pozwolenie na wejście na krater uzyskuje tylko 200 osób dziennie, więc tym razem tylko z dołu.
