What a wonderful lunch visit with my friend Jeanne! We've known one another for many moons. I was working my way through graduate school with the ultimate goal of earning a Master of Science in Ecology. While in college, I was successful at getting a job at The Environmental Learning Center as the Shoreline Revegetation Coordinator to restore and replenish critical fish habitat in the Indian River Lagoon. I met Jeanne at the ELC where she volunteered to educate people about the environment. We've stayed in touch all of these years. One of the best aspects of working at a Nature Center is the wildlife, and the people you work with and meet along the way. This last week so far, I have seen up close a majestic and beautiful Cara Cara bird of prey, one of the biggest and bluest land crabs I have seen in a very long time, an epic showdown between two Gopher tortoises, and I also got to learn how to operate and fly a drone which was seriously cool- much more so than I expected. The next skill I get to learn is Archery, our Director is getting us certified to teach the children of Indian River County and beyond this really neat skill. In Southern California's Rancho Mission Viejo (RMV), Fire Station 67 has been designed and constructed as a prefab, modular build—enabling faster completion and future reconfiguration. Designed by Seattle-based Wittman Estes, the 4,667-sf station was prefabricated offsite as 10 modules that were then assembled onsite. The offsite fabrication and rapid assembly led to a streamlined design, documentation, and permitting process. This approach allowed for parallel site development work in California and factory construction in Nevada, resulting in a construction timeline of six months. The modular system also allows for relocation and reconfiguration. The sturdy, durable steel modules can be easily transported and rearranged for possible future uses, such as an environmental learning center for RMV. The fairies in the Environmental Learning Center were getting cold and requested some homes to be built to keep them warm during the winter. These young kids and their parents came through! They worked together to build miniature homes in the woods specifically for the fairies. One child chose to build an apartment so many fairies could live together. The children and their parents spent so much time communicating and problem-solving together as they decided on what to use to build their home and how to fix things if they fell down. After building some families chose to write a letter to the fairies or draw a picture for them. Before we left the woods that day each child sprinkled fairy dust (milkweed seeds!) on their fairy homes so the fairies would know their homes were ready! The Environmental Learning Center, behind the Stillwater Area High School is open for hiking after school hours. Just please leave your pets at home - they make the fairies and other wildlife feel unsafe! I found this bracket fungus on a tree in #northcascadesnationalforest while teaching a nature journaling workshop at the #environmentallearningcenter. I can see why this type of fungus is listed as whimsical. I drew this in my forest journal because it made me think of tiny little steps into a forest gnome’s house. The North Cascades Environmental Environmental Learning Center is closed due to the Sourdough Fire and we have unfortunately decided to cancel all Learning Center-based programs for the rest of 2023. This has been an excruciating decision to make, but ultimately a necessary one because of ongoing firefighting efforts, campus operations and the need to provide staff, partners and customers advance notice and predictability. We will be using the rest of the year as a time to bolster our programs and strengthen our capabilities, and we will continue to offer programs including Field Excursions, Online Classes, Youth for the Environment and People (YEP!) and the Nature of Writing Speaker Series in Bellingham. 🙌 Utilities and @fcnaturalareas recently co-led a program called “What’s Up at the ELC? The Science behind the Poudre River Diversion.” 💧 We explored the Environmental Learning Center Flow Restoration Project is a cutting-edge initiative between FC Utilities, FC Natural Areas, CSU and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to help meet goals of these different organizations. Project objectives include keeping water in the Poudre, protecting wildlife habitat and improving river quality. 💬 One Utilities Public Engagement Specialist said, "It was great to hear from the experts who helped with the design and project management, as well as the insights and questions from other members of the community who were there to learn!" Happy #parktourtuesday! Today we are visiting the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) in Harrison Hills Park. The ELC, which was formerly a farmhouse, was converted into an all-inclusive nature education facility in 2008. There are some fascinating exhibits, including wildlife displays, cultural displays, and information about local geology and flora. The pictures shown here are all taken outside, but you can visit the inside on any Sunday from 1:00-3:00 through August 27th. Park Rangers will present each Sunday to engage visitors, answer questions and teach interested visitors all about the park and space. No registration is necessary, so be sure and stop down and say hello! If you cannot make it at that time, you can at least check out the nature garden and classroom located outside of the ELC. LANESBORO — Seven minutes a day: The amount of time the average American child spends outside engaging in free play, according to a 2018 Sanford Health study*. Seven hours a day: The amount of time the same study says the average American child spends in front of a screen. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, this number was flipped for me. As a child with endless energy you could find my brothers and me outside catching frogs and bugs, building forts, damming a creek, and whittling sticks. The long summer days were spent splashing in the river, making friends at nature camp, and making up games in the tree house with the neighbor kids. Screen time was always the least preferred option and reserved for when severe weather rolled in or we weren’t feeling well. Not to mention, with the Internet still a nascent technology back then, thankfully the addictive allure of digital devices wasn’t a large factor in my upbringing. For those of you that grew up with outdoor play experiences like I did, the above statistics probably shock you (if not, they should!). Today’s children are rapidly losing connection to the natural world and the myriad benefits that come along with time spent outside. Got to hang out with Stanwood at the Open House yesterday and tell people all about what an amazing bird a Harris’ hawk is. They typically live in Arizona, New Mexico and a little of Texas so he loves to stretch out his wings and sun bathe. They are social birds that live in family groups, so Stan enjoys “his people” (as much as a hawk can “enjoy” people!?!). He was raised by a falconer, so his is also pretty comfortable with people. He is at the Outdoor Learning Center because he has a heart condition and a shoulder problem so he can’t fly much and couldn’t take care of himself. Wow! What a beautiful weekend to launch the spring season of Haggart Observatory sky viewing. Visitors were greeted with warm evenings Friday and Saturday, as they joined Rose City Astronomer volunteers to see the moon, stars and Venus through telescopes on the ELC campus. The sounds of the wetland animals below provided a lovely ambiance adding to the mystic evenings. 🐻🤎🐻 Institute staff at the Environmental Learning Center recently had the pleasure of meeting with Anne Braaten, Bear Biologist for the North Cascades National Park Service! In her workshop, we learned about bears, talked about safety protocols for our campus, and heard the current NPS bear and visitor management strategy. Anne also shared some wonderful maps revealing why the Environmental Learning Center on Diablo Lake is a hotspot for bears passing through. Thanks for all the great info, Anne! Our Natural Wonders night hike was a huge success! 19 children and their caregivers explored in the Environmental Learning Center behind the high school. We found some super cool fungus on the trees...some of us refer to these as "fairy steps". We also found some fresh animal tracks throughout the woods. After our story by candlelight, some of the kids and their parents enjoyed the challenge of sliding down and climbing up the giant snow plow piles at the edge of the parking lot. #naturalwonders #kidsinnature #childrenandfamiliesinnature #environmentallearningcenter #stillwaterECFE
