Happy #WildlifeWednesday! The National Park Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service have announced a decision to actively restore grizzly bears to the North Cascades of Washington, where the animals once roamed. ๐ป According to the decision released April 25, agencies have decided to restore grizzly bears to the North Cascades ecosystem through the translocation of grizzly bears from other ecosystems in the Rocky Mountains or interior British Columbia. The decision is the culmination of an Environmental Impact Statement process that began in 2022. ๐ป Agencies will seek to move three to seven grizzly bears per year for a period of five to 10 years to establish an initial population of 25 bears. ๐ป Under the decision, grizzly bears in the North Cascades will be designated as a nonessential experimental population under section 10(j) of the Endangered Species Act, providing land managers with additional tools otherwise not available under the existing Actโs regulations. ๐ป There is no set timeline for when translocation of grizzly bears to the ecosystem may begin. If I could go back, before I did any other planning, Iโd take as much time as we needed to really hone in on what our dream wedding would look and feel like. ๐๐น๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ Lol Iโm mostly kidding. ๐ Overall I just wish I stuck to my guns and not compromised as much as I did when it came to guest list size. Looking back I feel like I kinda had one foot in, one foot out between these two conflicting wedding ideas. If I could do it over, Iโd commit to either, eloping just the two of us then celebrating with everyone later OR, if push came to shove, having a slightly larger wedding than originally planned. Went up to Cutthroat Pass (near Washington Pass) via Cutthroat Lake side. Extra mile each way because the road to TH is still snow covered. As for the slugs ๐คข, the banana slug improves the soil and disperses seeds, while the black slug eats seedlings voraciously. These are both small specimens- the banana slug can grow to 10โ๐ฎ

A WHOLE MOOD. North Cascades National Park is located in North Central Washington State. Established on October 2, 1968, itโs appropriately nicknamed โThe American Alps.โ In fact, a lot of the park is closed for access in the wintertime due to an absurdly high amount of snowfall and subsequent avalanche risk. North Cascades National Park is home to forests, subalpine meadows, and more than 300 glaciers, as well as bears, wolves, marmots, deer, and other mammals. Even though itโs just a short three-hour drive from Seattle in the summertime, North Cascades is one of the least visited national parks in the country. Weโre not quite sure why, because itโs GORGEOUS, although weโre guessing that people opt for the more accessible Mount Rainier and Olympic when theyโre in Washington. In August of 2023, we caught North Cascades on a rare weekend when access was limited by wildfires across the highway connecting the park directly to Seattle. Mount Redoubt in the not so distant North Cascades National Park, US, as seen from Chilliwack Lake, BC. Since I moved here in November last year, I've always seen the peaks around the valley under a snow cap. It gives me this certain thrill to capture a moment in these peaks that will never return. The snow will eventually melt this summer, and next winter, the peaks will be adorned with a unique new pattern altogether.
