Last night we hosted an Open House featuring our newly installed Nature Center! 🏡 The largest tree house in Darke County was built by young people during our Timber Frame Leadership Camp in 2020 and now it serves as a display for taxidermy that are native to our area. It also includes educational tools and readings for those who visit it during their time at Chenoweth Trails. 🦆🦃🦌 We also enjoyed a visit from the owls at @darkecoparks and we planted pumpkin seeds for those who visited the Open House to receive in the fall! 🦉🎃 A huge thanks to our volunteer, Diana Stebbins for helping to make this possible! We are excited to announce our Compost Giveback Day in partnership with the Town of Greenburgh on May 18th from 10am-2pm. Free for all Greenburgh residents, simply pre register using the link on our website! This is a bring your own bucket event, with a maximum of three, five gallon buckets per registered person. All compost sourced for the event comes from food waste disposed at the towns’ registered food scrap drop off locations by participating residents. A fun spring break @rlnaturecenter moment that was taken during our #insect camp. I love these events. They are so much fun, and I love speaking about insects. I used to be deathly afraid of most, but as I walked through life, I became interested in #insects and #arachnids to the point of obsession. I love teaching kids about their importance and how they live and how they are vital to the planet's survival. Sometimes, you just have to get a big crazy and become an #insects yourself. Okay, maybe not like they did in the sci-fi classic #thefly1958. But using bug glasses can be just as cool if not a bit safer than using a teleporter that merges human DNA with a Fly that got trapped or in this case an Ant and a Praying Mantis or Dragonfly. Join us bright and early on Saturday, May 4, for for a unique bird watching adventure on GCV&M’s limited-access Oatka Creek property - Walk with Warblers! 🐦 May is one of the best times to observe migrating warblers and many other birds since they are active and vocal preparing for their nesting season. We will begin the hike at The Lodge (the driveway directly across the street from the Museum’s main entrance) at 7 a.m. and return around 11 a.m. The hike will be approximately 3 miles at a leisurely pace through diverse habitats in search of warblers and songbirds, waterfowl and raptors.
