We left the main trail to Everest Base Camp and continued into another valley instead. So west we went, now with nearly no other people, until we reached Thame village, from where we hiked north again, with Nangpa La Pass and Tibet far ahead. In Lungden, the last village before Renjo La Pass, I got sick...I catched the flu somewhere. Blocked nose, headache, sore throat...so we took two restdays, hoping it will get better. But with no improvement after 2 days we decided to head further down for recovery, skip Renjo La Pass and climb up another valley. So back to Namche we went, and after one night there I already felt better. Next stop was Tengboche with it's famous monastery, and after 2 nights there we finally reached Dingboche, where we also stayed for 2 nights and climbed further up the slope to an old abandoned monastery. This slow pacing helped a lot, and I soon felt much much better and more prepared for the days to come... . . #asia #southasia #nepal #kingdom #himalaya #himalayas #mountain #mountainrange #mountains #snow #ice #hike #hiking #climbing #climb #hikingtheglobe #village #house #monastery #bhuddism #tibet #pass #mani #stone #namchebazar #ruin #prayerflags #view #homeiswheremybackpackis #everycountryintheworld

I have this thing for arches. The Bahia Palace is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Morocco. And there is little surprise why. Early in the morning we went to the airport, and after the typical delay we boarded a small twin-engine and finally left Kathmandu for the mountains. Himalayas, here we come! Already during the flight we had a few amazing views of the towering giants. Safely landed in Lukla, one of the most adventurous airstrips around the globe, we started hiking right away, and during the next days we made our way up and deeper into Sagarmatha National Park (Sagarmatha is the nepali name for Mt. Everest), always walking slowly and with enough rest / sleep in different villages to avoid altitude sickness. Through beautiful forests, over iconic suspension bridges, in deep valleys and side by side with horses and yaks we passes village after village until we finally reached Namche Bazar, the most famous settlement in the area, a historic trading post, known for it's Yak cheese and butter. It's still an important hub as it is a great junction...lot's of different paths from different valleys meet here. We also spent our first restday here, exploring the slightly higher located villages of Khumjung and Khunde with their monasteries and schools. And of course: incredible viewpoints, some of them showing Ama Dablam (one of the most beautiful mountains in Nepal and the world) in full glow, some even gave a first glimpse of the summit area of Mt. Everest. . . #asia #southasia #nepal #kingdom #mountains #mountain #mountainrange #himalaya #himalayas #snow #ice #giants #amadablam #sagarmatha #everest #mteverest #8000 #hiking #hike #climb #climbing #suspension #bridge #prayerflags #flags #yak #horse #airport #homeiswheremybackpackis #everycountryintheworld

Baghdad, Iraq ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ถ A really long time ago, this city was called Madinat al Salam i.e. meaning city of peace. The history of the area surrounding this city dates back to 3000 BC hosting civilizations like Akkadians, Babylonians, Sumerians and Assyrians. In recent times, this country has come to be known as โ€œdangerousโ€ - is it though? As tourists, we had no security issues during our trip and we were treated with respect, the cops often going โ€œHind?โ€ โ€œAh Amitabh Bachchanโ€ I would have been happier if they said Rajinikanth but oh well! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜… Must see places: ๐Ÿ“Œ Iraq Museum ๐Ÿ“Œ Al Mutanabi Street ๐Ÿ“Œ Mustansiriyah Madrasa ๐Ÿ“Œ Copper Souqs ๐Ÿ“Œ Al Rashid Street ๐Ÿ“Œ Tahrir and Firdous Square ๐Ÿ“Œ Martyrs Monument I fell in love with every inch of Damascus, Syria - that didnโ€™t happen here, even though it as historic. Of course we saw some wildlife during our hikes, our canoe rides and while driving around in a jeep. Without any luck you will still see lots and lots of crocodiles. 2 species can be found here: the Gharial and the Mugger (a vulnerable species). They are chilling around just everywhere. Also birds and deer can be spotted easily. Further and deeper in the park, we also came across a few monkeys and some peacocks. For a few seconds we even saw a sloth-bear crossing the dirt road 50m in front of us...a very rare sighting. Unfortunately we didn't see any tiger, but during the end of our jeep ride we spotted 3 different rhinos, one of them superclose. What a feeling! Such an impressive and beautiful animal!!! Sadly, we still saw soo many tourists coming for an elephant ride. This abuse should be stopped. Besides that, this NP does a lot of conservation work and we had a really great and relaxing time here...now the hard work starts... ๐Ÿ˜‰ . . #asia #asian #southasia #nepal #kingdom #himalaya #himalayas #mountains #south #chitwan #natural #nationalpark #conservation #wildanimals #wildlife #animals #jungle #forest #river #bird #monkey #deer #bambi #crocodile #rhino #safari #jeep #sunset #homeiswheremybackpackis #everycountryintheworld

How to get photos at Angkor Wat without any people โœจ๏ธ SAVE โœจ๏ธ for your next visit! โœจ๏ธ Sunrise is of course the best time to visit Angkor Wat, but there are still crazy crowds. Below are the best spots to get photos with little to no people! โœจ๏ธ Right of the south reflection pond: you're going to see a huge crowd of people right in front of the reflection pools, but if you venture to the right of the south pond there is little to no people and you can capture a photo like this! โœจ๏ธ Left side of the north library: the right side of the north library and south library were packed with people, but there are a lot less on this side for some reason โœจ๏ธ Inside the temple complex: After you take your sunrise shots, head inside quickly to take your photos. People will still be lingering around the front so you want to take advantage while it's still empty! Have you been to Angkor Wat? If you have any other tips feel free to drop them below!๐Ÿ‘‡

No guesses needed for my next series !! You have probably come across this image on IG or elsewhere at some point or the other. Though this was my 2nd visit to Abu Dhabi, at the time of my 1st visit, this park did not exist, so I was keen to visit it on this trip. I chose to visit it during sunset because the sun goes behind the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque & creates this incredible glow. This is a must visit if in Abu Dhabi. The park is free but do time your visit here correctly as once the sun starts setting, it all happens very quickly & you only have a short window to take pics & trust me, you will be taking a lot of pics of this incredible view !! ๐Ÿ“ Bafatรก, Guinea Bissau ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ผ Bafatรก is a town in central Guinea Bissau. It is known as the birthplace of Amรญlcar Cabral (the person who got Guinea Bissau independence from Portugal in 1974). All the points of interest are located in the colonial centre of the town. Points of interest I visited were: โ€ข Our Lady of Grace Cathedral: This catholic cathedral is one of the only two cathedrals in the country. Unfortunately it was closed when I visited. (Picture # 1) โ€ข Amรญlcar Cabral Museum: Amรญlcar Cabralโ€™s house is converted into a museum. The museum contains dozens of his photos, the books he read, etc. It has been recently renovated with funds from UNESCO. โ€ข Direccรฃo Regional da Educacao de Bafatรก: This is the educational centre of the town. Not a touristy place but I really liked the Portuguese style architecture of this building. It is right across from the cathedral. (Pictures # 4) โ€ข Colonial Era Post Office: I stumbled upon this old, non-functional colonial era post office while walking around the town centre. The building is in shambles inside and out. There are mails and legal documents lying around on the floor everywhere. Most of these documents were from the 1960s and 70s - before the country got its independence from Portugal. (Pictures # 5-6) I visited Bafatรก on a day trip from Bissau city. Bafatรก is a rustic town and gives a raw African vibe. Getting here takes about 3 hours on rough unpaved dusty roads and hiring a private (expensive) driver. The town is not touristy but worth a visit if you have time and budget. Country #186 ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ธ South Sudan South Sudan is the youngest country in the world, founded in 2011. Between a civil war, genocide, mass corruption and poverty there are many negatives in the media about South Sudan. It was a quick e-visa to visit with a confirmation email coming seconds after payment (160USD). You require an invitation letter, issued by Acacia Village (140USD p/n). The government is extremely wary of the current security threats for foreigners along with them posing as tourists while undertaking journalism or spying thus making it the hardest country to take photos and move around. Permits (100USD) are required if youโ€™re leaving Juba and there are frequent checkpoints and guards, often drunk, requesting bribes. Reportedly, the government has not paid the salaries of workers for several months, hence the guards taking it upon themselves to make their salaries by extorting the few foreigners that visit the country. The highlight of the trip was observing the daily life of the Mandari tribe where life is about their Ankole-Watusi breed of cattle. Cattle is a source of wealth, often forming dowry payments. Their dung is piled up and burned (smoke in pictures) with the ash used as antiseptic and sunscreen, shielding mundari from the 40-degree celcius heat. They bath in urine - used as an antiseptic, deterent from mosquitos and an aesthetic choice โ€“ the ammonia in the urine colours their hair orange. The ongoing instability has cut the Mundari tribe from the world as they donโ€™t venture away from the bush which has preserved their unique way of life. To visit you need a guide to navigate the paperwork, bribes and logistics of locating the tribe which costs around ~400-500USD per person/per day. #visiteverycountry #everypassportstamp #everycountryintheworld #roadto197 #southsudan #juba #nileriver #10secondsofinsanecourage #mosttraveledpeople #lonelyplanettraveller #mundaritribe #mundari #solotravel #nomadmania #tribe #cattle #ankole #ankolecattle

Our last days in Tasmania were filled with thrilling places. For example Lake Rosebery, nestled between mountain ranges, with water so clear, and campspots around. Or the edge of the world, a spot on the beautiful and rough westcoast, from where (without earth's curvation and with unlimited eyesight) you could see South America. Not to forget the amazing forests, with unusual shaped trees and picturesque waterfalls, abandoned mines now filled with water, and wonderful beaches...and all this just for ourselves, nobody around except the animals. Great time here comes to an end...now back to mainland for a quick stop with our friends before the next adventure awaits us. . . #oceania #australia #aussie #downunder #red #continent #tasmania #island #ocean #southpacificocean #southpacific #pacificocean #lake #mountains #clear #roadtrip #campervan #camping #hiking #westcoast #rough #waterfall #jungle #forest #tree #mine #beach #sand #homeiswheremybackpackis #everycountryintheworld

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ผ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ผ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ผ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ผ Animistic and traditional customs are widely practiced in the Biombo region of Guinea Bissau. The Pepel are the main ethnic group here and about 7% of the country. (1st image) This manโ€™s brother died and he is assuming the provider position in the deceasedโ€™s family. Itโ€™s a 6-day ceremony where he wears the tradition red robe and beats on a drum. (Next image) Some of the community is sharing food provided by a person who asked for something at a shrine and later received it. He provided the feast as a thank you for his wish coming true. (Next 2) There are numerous fetishes / shrines in the area which provide personal & property protection. Violators suffer various physical and mental pains unless they confess in public. Many are composed of red cloths and one was made from calabash shells. (Next 5) There was a funeral ceremony while we there. The deceased man was wrapped in numerous fabrics before being buried. The women who attended were fashionably dressed. After the burial, dancing to loud recorded music began, sometimes accompanied by drums. A cow was tied to a tree unaware of his fate later in the night. For whatever reasons, buzzards perched on branches were observing the ceremonies. (Next) A giant ceiba tree on the side of the road. These centenarians are ubiquitous throughout the country. Everest Base Camp tips โœจ๏ธ SAVE โœจ๏ธ for your next trip! โœจ๏ธ I did the trek in 10 days due to flight cancelations, but plan at least 2 weeks for unforseen circumstances. If you are prone to altitude sickness or aren't used to hiking at high altitudes, EBC is doable but I would recommend 2-3 weeks โœจ๏ธ Best thing I brought: Lifestraw water bottle -- water gets crazy expensive the higher you go (even asking for tea houses for filtered water will cost you!) so I loved having a lifestraw water bottle, which has a built-in filter, to fill up anywhere (not sponsored, just really loved it) โœจ๏ธ Wish I had brought: Mini solar panel to hang on backpack / multiple external batteries -- I didn't know this beforehand, but the tea houses charge for everything, especially the higher you go. Hot shower? 700 Rupees ($5.50) Satellite WiFi? 800 Rupees ($6) Charging an external battery? 1500 Rupees ($12) โœจ๏ธ If you don't have your own gear already at home or aren't planning on bringing it, there are crazy amounts of gear shops in Kathmandu where you can buy everything. There's intense competition so you can barter things down pretty easily or find things sold cheaply! What are your favorite things to have on a multi-day trek? โœจ๏ธ

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ผ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ผ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ผ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ผ Cacheu, Guinea Bissau was a frontier European / Afro settlement, founded in the 1400s on a river of the same name. In 1687, the Portuguese founded the city on land that had belonged to the Papei people. The new colonial city grew into one of Portugalโ€™s primary slave ports. When the international slave trade was outlawed in the 1830s, the city of Bissau began to decline, until 1941 when the capital of Portuguese Guinea was moved from Bolama to Bissau.ย In the 1950s, Guinea-Bissau, like many African nations at the time, began organizing for independence from the Portuguese and achieved their goal in 1975. The national hero is Amรญlcar Lopes da Costa Cabral (1924-1973) who was the most important leader in Guinea Bissauโ€™s long and difficult but ultimately successful quest for independence from Portugal in 1975. He was assassinated 2 years before independence by a disgruntled former colleague. He was one of Africaโ€™s foremost anti-colonial leaders. (1st image) At Amรญlcar Cabral University, thereโ€™s an exhibition on his life. (Next) He was born to affluent parents from Cape Verde and attended university in Lisbon & studied agronomy. He is 2nd to the left in the 2nd row. (Next) He became an intellectual nationalist revolutionary poet. Hereโ€™s a poem written about by college friends which later became the basis for a song by Cesรกria ร‰vora. (Next) A psychedelic portrait of him made in 1964. He was strongly influenced by Marxism, having seen firsthand the hard lives of common farmers and laborers when working as an agronomist. The Eastern Bloc was the man supplier of weapons for most African liberation movements. (Next 2) Cabralโ€™s mausoleum is In the Amura Fort (built by the Portuguese around 1700). (Next 3) Next to him are the graves of former presidents and freedom fighters, most of whom died young. (Next) His white VW is stored here, similar to Khadijaโ€™s 1st car.
