Indigenous peoples are among the first to face the direct consequences of climate change, due to their dependence upon, and close relationship, with the environment and its resources. Climate change exacerbates the difficulties already faced by indigenous communities, including political and economic marginalization, loss of land and resources, human rights violations, discrimination, and unemployment. The destruction of ancestral land is directly related to the erasure of tradition, language, and culture of indigenous people. “It feels like we’re in a war quite often at Fairy Creek, like we’re in this war of the woods.” To stop the logging of centuries-old trees, land defenders like Shy-Anne Gunville are putting their bodies on the line. Today ,October 26th, was supposed to be my court date but I was informed at the last possible moment that the RCMP were not going to proceed with the charges. I was arrested with Osprey(a fellow Minor), and another fabulous bestie @dr.rev.connor We were on a logging road blocking Industry from logging in the Bugaboo (an absolutely magical ancient forest). I was in a friendship bracelet hard block on a gate going across the logging road. At the block when Industry workers came, one extremely angry worker attacked my friend. We called the police to report the assault AND THEY HUNG UP ON US. When the RCMP came they decided to arrest us however they failed to arrest or detain the person who assaulted my friend and threatened me. In this video I was sent, taken right from the back of a police van thanks to an anonymous source, you will see two officers using small joint manipulation, and pressure points to cause pain to an already handcuffed person who is lying prone on the ground. After speaking to the person in the video, she informed me that one of these public servants is also putting his whole weight on her left knee and right calf. This is the kind of behaviour the colonial court system deems acceptable, so as not to prevent Teal Jones from making profit. August 23 at 1 pm Nanaimo RCMP detachment 303 Prideaux St. Over the past three months RCMP have illegally set broad exclusion zones that are not part of the injunction obtained by logging company Teal Jones against peaceful land defenders at Fairy Creek. The injunction itself is quite clear in that it outlaws obstructing logging, but not access to the area. On July 20, 2021 BC Supreme Court Justice Douglas Thompson ruled, "The RCMP geographically extensive exclusion zones and checkpoints are not justified." Next action: August 4 at 6pm on 1 Port Drive Heatwaves, fires and drought are staring us in the face. The mind and body are feeling pain. Our forest ecosystems, which protect us and all who dwell within, are being ravaged. In the past two weeks three 'vessels of oblivion' have docked at the Port of Nanaimo to load raw log exports destined to be processed on foreign shores. In January 2019 at a truck loggers convention @johnhorgan4bc stated, "We want to reduce the amount of logs going out, and increase the amount of jobs coming from our logs" As such Extinction Rebellion Nanaimo will be taking space at 1 Port Drive on Wednesday August 4 at 6pm and demand our premier live up to his words and end the trend of local mill closures and increased log exports. The only unbroken ice shelf in the Canadian Arctic collapsed at the end of July, after losing nearly half its total area in the space of two days. . An area bigger than Manhattan from the Milne Ice Shelf fell into the sea, thanks to rising temperatures. .
