DC has some of the oldest underground methane gas pipes in the country, and these pipes are leaking large amounts of methane throughout the city. There are more than 6,000 leaks in the district — more than twice the average US city. Some of these leaks are so dangerous that they could explode at any moment, posing a severe and immediate threat to the city’s residents. Gas leaks are also a major environmental justice problem. They need lots of moisture and high temperatures. Every afternoon while I'm waiting for water to boil for my coffee, I spray my little seeds :) It feels like death is all around us these days. Giving life to seeds is a really magical way for me to push back against the negative energy pervading the planet right now. I love gardening so I will definitely keep growing plants when shelter-in-place is ended. I don't think the virus will calm down any time soon, and I don't think normal will ever return. Scout your neighborhood and take cuttings of plants like rosemary, marigold, thyme, mint, coneflower, and lavender. Taking a cutting is easy. Just remove a part of a viable plant – which encourages it to start new roots or stalks – and plant it in a pot! Many plants are happy to share and actually grow back stronger. FUN FACT: if one day (perhaps Earth Day!) Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia mobilized their National Guard and deployed each guard to an individually assigned portion of Chesapeake Bay and/or tributary shore approximately 3/4 of a mile long, it would take each guard about 4-1/2 hours to fill the 2-3/4 trash cans of plastic waste in his/her assignment, and the entire Bay would be plastic-free for the first time in almost a century. 🤔 I’m quite sure that the bureaucracy would wind up taking by far the most amount of time. However, if we persisted thenceforth to monitor the situation we could thereafter pinpoint the source/s and prevent persistence of the problem! Historians attribute the success of the Roman Empire to its propensity for organization. Every Roman soldier carried both a “gladius” (sword) and a “trulla” (shovel); for if he wasn’t fighting, he was building infrastructure to improve defense, trade routes, and sanitation. Roman citizens didn’t pay taxes for their legions to idly occupy their positions, for only one was needed as a lookout. If attacked while building, their gladius was still close at hand. Semper peratus... Now, whilst our own empire has its legions protecting merely “our interests” on the far side of the world, couldn’t our own National Guard protect us (U.S.) here in the Capital and environs, from the threat of plastic (made from chemicals) waste among the food we raise, hunt, forage and fish for? This poisonous contamination winds up in our own bodies, and in those of the children we feed; albeit part-per-million at a time. Not So Fun Fact: Since I was a boy my family and I have “adopted” a 125 yard stretch of shoreline here in Charles County, Maryland from which I daily pull 15 gallons of plastic waste from the Potomac River for recycling. That means that at any point in time there is roughy 4-1/4 50gal. trash cans to be filled for every mile of shore, or 3,442-1/2 cans along the entire length of the river 405 miles long. The James is 444 miles long, and so is the Susquehanna, the York and tributaries are 230 miles long and the Rappahannock 195! Does this statistic hold true for the entire Chesapeake region at 11,684 miles of tributary shoreline? That would mean that the Chesapeake copes with almost 50,000.00 trash cans full, as they slowly make their way to the Atlantic at about a trash can a day. I have a strange feeling that your average recreational boater isn’t simply throwing his lunch waste over the side. I find barrels, automotive wheels, toilet seats, siringhe bottles and other medical waste. I’m sure glad that law-enforcement still has the time and resources to harass motorists after their long and pressing list of priorities. Today I participated in a mass shut down of DC city streets during the morning commute to raise more awareness about climate change. Drivers, predictably, were not happy to have their daily routines delayed, and other folks ask “how is blocking traffic going to help this issue??” The answer is this : we do not have time for business as usual. When those in power systemically disregard the peoples pursuit of clean air, water, safe and sustainable futures for the next generation — we must speak louder, organize better, disrupt more. This is not a drill. We are staring down mass extinction, the devastation around which is unfathomable. Thank you to the folks that put in the amazing work to organize today. TBH we need like 10000 people in the street every single day...but 30 people taking an intersection I’ll take for now ;) Thank you for the supporters and those who yelled at us for making them late.
