Ndugu & The Chocolate Jam Co. “Do I Make You Feel Better?”, 1980 When Leon Ndugu Chancler released “Do I Make You Feel Better?” as his first solo album, he was far from a rookie. During the 70s he’d been playing his drums with prominent musicians like Miles Davis, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, The Emotions and Eddie Harris. He had a lot of jazz in him. With this album he’s showing the very short distance between jazz and soul and he does with the help of Hubert Laws, George Duke, Rory Kaplan, David T. Walker, Ronnie Foster and the wonderful Dorothy Ashby! Background vocals are provided by The Jones Girls, Virginia Ayers, Maxine Anderson and Ndugu himself. The album is not only produced by Ndugu but he also wrote all the soul/boogie tunes except the opening track which is an Andy Gibb tune. Every song is brilliantly composed and arranged! I love coming back to this album every now and then because of its fantastic songs and production! It’s a wonderful boogie/ soul album! I’ve almost bought this album a couple of times and it finally came up cheap enough to take a punt on it. Good thing too, beneath that deeply unpromising cover is a pretty cool funk album…obviously with a lot more violin than most others. George Duke is behind a lot of the writing and produced it, there’s also a bit of Mizell magic applied and if that’s not enough Hubert Laws puts in a guest appearance. According to the sleeve Patrice Rushen is in here somewhere but I didn’t spot her. Big synths, slapping bass and it probably has the baddest ode to vegetarianism I’ve ever heard in ‘we don’t eat no meat y’all’. Loads of fun and well worth the £2.99 this set me back. James Vincent - Space Traveler [1976] BANGER ALERT! Checked out my first album from a fairly underrated guitarist/vocalist and a great musician overall, James Vincent. In particular, his second studio release; a 1976 Caribou Records release titled Space Traveler. Never once I heard of the name James Vincent until I saw a drummer I recently discovered on Instagram which has quickly become one of my favorites, Chris Burroughs, did a short drum cover on the sixth track in this album, "Firefly". Dude, he nail everything; the feel, the sound, the little embellishments, everything! He's terrific and let's end that there. What really caught me about the cover he did, though, was the mention of Harvey Mason as the original drummer of the track. If you know me, you know I'm a sucker for Harvey! So I went and check out the whole track and found out that Vincent, as the main artist, also sings. I wasn't expecting that 'cause when you have a drum groove like one opening the track, it's usually going to be a jazz/funk/fusion instrumental jam. But no, he sings and somehow make the vocals uplift the track! I decided to pick the album where the track originated, which is this one, for today, but before listening I did a bit of research of both the artist and the album like I usually do. Here's the thing; there are a couple unexpected things I found about this guy. First, looking at his pictures online, which there aren't many, he doesn't look like a guitar god, like; he doesn't have the poise of a master shredder or whatever that is. I though his one of those singer-songwriter that uses the instrument for the sole purpose of accompaniment. WRONG! He CAN play, he CAN shred! Dude, his playing is NUTS in album. Second, and this I say with no mean of any offense; how did he get all these first rate musicians to play in his album? I mean, names such Harvey Mason, Verdine+Fred White, and Leon Chancler already surprised me, but Peter Cetera and Clyde Stubblefield? C'mon now! I need to know the story behind these! What about you? Tina had been working through material leading up to Private Dancer and so, part of that process included cover songs. One of those songs would be Help by the Beatles. The song was made into a soul and rock fused ballad that created a rather moving experience for the listener. The music video is simple with Tina on stage with a couple background singers. We like how Tina almost gives a subdued performance really focusing on the words and not trying to make it into a show. She feels the message and wants to makes sure you do to. The single would reach number 40 in the UK and number 14 in the Netherlands. Interestingly the song was omitted from the original US pressing of the album. It would appear years later in special reissued editions. Rock 'N Roll Widow was chosen for the B-side. This is available on the Private Dancer 30th Anniversary Edition. Fun fact, this song was written by Tom Snow, the songwriter for Deeper Than The Night and Make A Move On My by Olivia Newton-John. It's a tale of life on the road and in the industry. Some records pack more juju than others. Alkebu – Lan is one of those that seems to consume more energy than it emits, which is saying something. It’s not an easy listen but it was always meant to be tough medicine rather than a sugar coated strawberry. There is a lot of very free frenetic improv playing that veers to the hyper kinetic more often than not. But even at it’s most angst ridden the music is filled with reverence and love for the the fertile ground from which these vibrations sprang. The serene does break through the onslaught every now and then and when it does it is like a gentle calming breeze after the storm. Recorded live at the East this album is a direct reflection of the principles espoused by the venue. The East was a black cultural community centre that was founded in Brooklyn in 1969. Focused on black self determination and black consciousness it was the beating heart of the black community in the region and on weekends the East would become a venue for musicians to perform. Recorded in August of 1971 Akebu- Lan feeds of all the energy that was channelled through the East and unleashes a musical manifesto meant as a call of awareness to those in need of waking up. The effect is powerful and awe inspiring when you digest the fact that this was all recorded live in one take. All the musicians bring their A-game including Carlos Garnett, Buster Williams, Andy Bey, Gary Bartz, Ndugu, Billy Hart and Stanley Cowell (who in particular is playing some of the best, fiercest piano you will hear him play). Of course percussionist James Mtume is the leader of this incredible band and the fact that he manages to leave his fingerprints all over the proceedings despite the all stars he’s playing with attests to the lasting greatness of his talents. First listen of the day. Just got this one. Can you tell I had a busy weekend of digging? Makes for a lovely week of discovery. I first got hip to Hampton Hawes via his album of duets with Charlie Haden. Love that record. This one may become my Hawes go to though. Imagine a nexus of Miles’ second quintet, Blakeys Jazz Messengers and Horace Silver. This is that nexus. Some truly gorgeous Rhodes playing, great drumming and percussion by Ndugu and a lovely front line, including the under recorded Oscar Brashear. Orrin Keepnews does a remarkable job producing. Being such a fan of Michael Howell’s second LP “In the Silence” I had to pick up his first release “Looking Glass” put out a year earlier in 1973 also on Milestone. While a more traditional jazz approach, it’s still a great listen. Fun to see and hear one of his bosses at the time Hampton Hawes take on the role as a side musician (check out his Rhodes work on the opening track “Half-Blues”). For his debut release Michael put together quite the all star cast. Besides Hampton there’s also..Norman Bishop Williams, Henry Franklin and Ndugu Chancler to name a few. I only wish the masses picked up on Michael’s talents (and recordings).
