A Giant Mayfly, 𝘏𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘢! I know butterflies and moths usually get all the credit for having the most beautiful wings in the insect world, but mayflies don't have the luxury of having those fancy colored scales on their wings! Look at the perfect, elegant design on this one. So fragile! These are from the family Ephemeroptera. Which means living only a day. Their larvae will live underwater for about a year, but once they emerge as adults, they'll only live for about 24 hours! They can't even eat during that time because they have no mouthparts! This is the only Giant Mayfly I've ever seen. They are not rare and known to produce giant swarms near water. Giant Mayfly (Hexagenia limbata) Species of mayfly in the family Ephemeridae and one of the most widely spread in the Eastern U.S. Adults like this have extremely short lifespans, usually just a matter of days so all their energy is focused on reproducing. Eggs ae laid in water with soft sediment, and the larvae burrow into this silt for camouflage and protection. It's a giant mayfly that came to my mothing station last week. Mayflies are a reliable indicator of water quality as they start their lives in a river or stream and can't tolerate pollution. According to Colorado State University, "The role of mayflies and stoneflies in the food chain is fundamental, as well. Immature mayflies and stoneflies consume algae, living plants, dead leaves, wood and each other. In this nymph phase, when they have gills and live exclusively underwater, they are an important food source for many animals further up the food chain, including fish and wading birds. When the mayflies and stoneflies emerge from the water as adults, they are essential food for spiders, other insects such as dragonflies and damselflies, and many kinds of birds and bats." This lovely lady is an eastern dobsonfly! The terrifying creature making noises in the background is Louie. Dobsonflies can be intimidating if you aren’t familiar with them. Even their larvae, known as hellgrammites, are covered in leglike appendages and sport a large pair of pincers. Mayflies blooming are a sign of the summer season! Mayflies are aquatic insects that belong in the Ephemeroptera order, this order is part of an ancient group of insects. Mayfly larva are aquatic. The larva are called “naiads” or “nymphs” in the entomology world. Mayfly nymphs can live anywhere from a few months to a few years in the water. They can be found in CLEAN, freshwater environments within the bottom silt/sediment, or under submerged rocks. 🪨💦 Mayflies emerge from the water and molt into their adult form. Some of the molts can be seen in my photos. Mayflies are known for their extremely short life spans and large emergence numbers. Depending on the species, some live a few days and others a couple hours.⏳ Mayflies can only survive in CLEAN water environments. The presence or absence of mayflies each year is an indication of water pollution. 💧☠️ Some of the mayflies in my above photos are known as Giant Mayflies. They are common in the eastern US and can be identified by their darkened wings, yellow/brown pattern on their bodies, and their two twin filament tails! Other species of mayfly can be identified by looking at these key features 🔑 In the fly fishing realm, these insects and their distinct life cycle are well known. This is the 45th installment of 'Since I've Been Gone'. Taken on the same day as the previous post while I was on my Iowa hitch with @americanconservationexperience, nightfall was arriving and all sorts of critters make themselves known. Originally struggling in the water, I rescued this giant mayfly (Hexagenia limbata) so I could get a picture of it. This is the imago form, of which the main purpose is to fly for a mate and do so before their brief lives end. It's assumed that mayflies live brief lives based on their imago lifespan, but the instar, or naiad, form is in fact where the majority of their life is spent. For this genus at least, they are fully aquatic and live in U-shaped burrows within the sediment of slow-moving bodies of water filter-feeding on detritus. If you're heading up to Gimli for Islendingadagurinn (the Icelandic Festival) check out this lesser known giant thing! Gimli is known for its imposing and impressive Viking on the lakeshore that celebrates its Icelandic history, but Gimli also has a giant fishfly too! Gimli and indeed most of Lake Winnipeg is home to the ubiquitous fishfly which is actually a mayfly. They spend up to a year or two as nymphs living on the lake bottom but once the water temperature hits 20 degrees celsius they molt and grow wings and emerge from the water in the millions! They need to quickly find a mate and lay eggs as their adult life is very short, just a day or two. They may not live long but they make up with it with their numbers and they can completely cover the ground and structures near the lakeshore! They are totally harmless however and pose no threat to people or animals (other than their nuisance factor). This mass emergence is called "predator satiation" and helps ensure the survival of the species. Basically there are so many that predators are overwhelmed and the fishfly species will survive even mass predation to lay their eggs for the next generation. The reason we call them fishflies is that once they die they start decomposing and they smell like fish! Fishfly season in Gimli is usually in July, depending on the weather and the year (some years have a much larger emergence) but now that's it's August most of the fishflies are gone. Little life update: I’m moving to Michigan! I’m really excited to find new (to me) insects in a new state, and this is the first one I didn’t recognize on sight. After a little research, I found that these are giant mayflies. They’re common throughout the U.S., especially near lakes and slow rivers. I found them en masse on and around the windows of this gas station.

A life in a day! (or two...) Imagine spending 99% of your life growing up, only to live a day as an adult before passing away. Crazy right? For this giant mayfly (Hexagenia sp.), it's more than just imagination - it's reality. They spend roughly 2 years developing underwater only to live up to 48 hours as adults. It's not just mayflies that do this, though, as many insect species spend a very long time (17 years in one case!) growing up only to perish right after. So why would an animal do something like that? The answer is simple: reproduction. The sole purpose that the adults serve is ensuring the next generation is secured! It is believed the lack of mouthparts further pressures these insects to find their mates and do what nature intended! During the right time of the year, hundreds of these mayflies will take to the air and form a massive mating cloud, where males and females link up and mate while in flight! After copulation, the females will fall onto the water's surface and proceed to lay eggs before crossing the rainbow bridge.
