Nature Nuggets from DelMarva: One of the most commonly occurring plants in the Delaware and Maryland marshes lining the shore is the Swamp Milkweed - also known as Asclepias Incarnata. Here are a few factoids about this amazing plant: 1. Swamp milkweed attracts a profusion of butterflies, especially the monarch butterfly. Besides harvesting nectar, the monarch butterfly also lays it eggs on milkweeds. The plant will thrive in average garden soil as long as it does not dry out completely, especially in the spring. Thus, it is an excellent addition to a native plant garden. 2. Swamp milkweed, Asclepias incarnata, is named for the Greek god of medicine, Asklepios. Incarnata, is from the Latin carn, meaning "flesh" and atus, "like", because its hue is sometimes like flesh or dusty rose in color. 3. Swamp milkweed’s smooth narrow leaves are lance-shaped with sharp tips and occur in pairs. Sometimes the leaf’s edges turn inward and upward suggesting the prow of a ship. 4. The round, flat flower heads are deliciously scented of vanilla, smooth lance-shaped leaves turn a glorious gold in fall, elegant seed pods become a crafter's dream, and who can resist helping the silky seeds catch the breeze and paraglide away. Atlantic Ghost Crabs are ninja stealthy on beaches and most active at night. They create shelter holes close to the dunes to scavenge in the wrack line of the beach for dead animal and plant matter that washes up as the tide goes out. One of the most common herpetology questions I hear is “Are newts and salamanders the same?” Newts belong to a family sub-group of salamanders called Pleurodelinae, and the red-spotted newt is one of the most recognizable herpetofauna of Maryland. Most people observe them as red, terrestrial juveniles that inhabit lush forest floors. These juveniles, called efts, start their life cycles as fully aquatic larvae and later transition into olive green-yellow aquatic adults that prefer still or slow-moving waters. The newts found in Maryland are the red-spotted subspecies (Notophtalmus viridescens viridescens) of the eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens), though other subspecies have red spots as well. Of the 22 salamander species in Maryland, the red-spotted is our only newt species
