De Ghanese Spiritueel leider Okomfo Anokye 👑💫 Tijdens onze reis mocht een trip naar Kumasi, de voormalige hoofdstad van het Ashanti Koningkrijk, zeker niet ontbreken. Het werd bevestigd dat er nog zoveel van te leren valt over de leefwijze, culturele gebruiken en de geschiedenis van de Ashanti gemeenschap. We bezochten het ‘Okomfo Anokye Sword altaar’. Dit altaar staat naast het ziekenhuis ook vernoemd, naar de invloedrijke priester en healer. Daar zagen wij dat er altijd plek en ruimte gemaakt moet worden voor traditionele healing en voorouderverering. Okomfo Anokye stond bekend om zijn magische krachten en werd beschouwd als een held en grondlegger van de Ashanti-cultuur. De Okomfo Anokye Sword, zoals het gewoonlijk wordt genoemd, is een zwaard dat meer dan 400 jaar geleden in de grond werd geïmplanteerd. Dit is een heilige plek dus foto’s maken van het zwaard mocht niet, maar het raakte ons diep om dit van dichtbij te mogen zien. Het verhaal over de Golden Stool, het magische zwaard en de leiderschap en spirituele wijsheid van de Ashanti Tribe zijn voorbeelden van veerkracht en geloof in tradities, die hebben geïnspireerd ons te blijven zoeken naar meer verhalen en dat bredere perspectief. to be continued…. Even though the Ashanti were annexed into the British Empire, they ruled themselves with little reference to the colonial power. In most cultures, a stool is just another piece of furniture; but, in Ghana, a stool is a very important cultural object. Ghana has several myths, rituals and beliefs surrounding this piece of furniture- so much so that it surpasses its utilitarian aspect. Most stools are carved from wood and each carving holds a symbolic meaning that is supposed to highlight the owner's qualities. These stools cannot be used by anyone but their owner and, each person tends to receive one as they hit puberty. The most famous stool in Ghana has to be the Golden Stool from the Asante Empire, which is entirely made of gold and never to be kept on the ground or sat upon. Ghanaians value the Golden Stool so much that when a British officer ordered to sit on it, they declared war on the British. But fear not, the Golden stool is not in the British Museum. It is still in Ghana and only brought out for the public on special occasions.

The chairs are inspired by Akan’s golden stool. Within the Akan practice the golden stools are not be sat on by anyone, as it houses the owners spirit / a higher spirit. Which is why I made a small element of the chair in brass from the Sankofa bird and dramatically modernised the design so that it doesn’t look identical, but does have some elements reminiscent of the golden stool. The ‘Sankofa bird’ in Akan means to ‘return back to heritage’, which is essentially what this bar space is about. Through the colonial impact, much of African heritage is tied to African Traditional Spirituality which is often overlooked or frowned upon. This bar reframes this narrative in a positive light and is a celebration of lost heritage.
