It was a pretty decent day at the park. I logged 40 species in an hour, maybe 41, but I had doubts about the Indigo Bunting Merlin kept insisting was around. 📚 📖 ✍🏽 28/32 I want to visit all UW-Madison libraries 🤓 📚📖🗄️🗃️🗂️📝📜 Today, I swim swim to the Wisconsin Water Library Walking into the Water Library was like stepping into a sanctuary dedicated to the waters of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes. The Water Library was established in 1964, and its collections have nearly 30,000 volumes about the waters of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes. They also participated in several outreach projects, such as collaborating with the American Water Resources Association to create an archive of their conference, with the Bimaadiziwin project, which presented a map that offers a glance into tribal conservation efforts concerning water, or with the UW Resource Institute, which promotes research, training, and information dissemination about water problems and solutions. The library also collaborates with art and the humanities. For example, 2019 they collaborated with the Chazen Museum of Art to curate the exhibition: Plastic Entanglements: Ecology, Aesthetics, Materials. Also, they collaborated with the Special Collections library to showcase map making since the 1600s and the Great Lakes' historical influence on Wisconsin's history. The library is small but welcoming. Located in the Dejop, it offers a calm space to study and investigate the history of the Great Lakes. But perhaps my favorite part was the collection of children's books, a reminder that the importance of water conservation and appreciation transcends generations. About that Eclipse... I ended up on top of a mountain in Springwater New York where the unexpected rain forecast held true and rained exactly for the entirety of the Eclipse. My good camera never saw the light of day and stayed in it's dry bag. The friends I was with took notice of other things... the Robin's began singing their night songs, and the peepers (tiny frogs) began chirping. Then, it was quiet during totality. Then it looked like morning, dawn, as the sun grew brighter, birds sang morning songs, and three hours later, it was sunny skies. To experience the 2nd sunset later that day was surreal. Two night times. A day or so later, I realized the moons' shadow was visible under the clouds in my photos. It became pitch black. You needed a flashlight kind of dark. I've never experienced that before. I've also never been in the path of 100% totality either until now. I hear there's another total Eclipse coming to Iceland in the future. At the end of our days here in the bush, we like to congregate around a fire, and share stories from the day, sometimes we share stories from our own weirdly complex and messy lives. Our furry friends always know how to find the warmth of the fire, as soon as it comes on. They listen to our stories and tap you softly with their paws when you laugh too hard, suggesting that they are somehow part of the conversation. Around the fire, you always make a friend, you leave knowing something you didn’t know and you always go to bed full of hope to tackle what lies ahead, because people throw around advice, people encourage each other and people laugh late into the night. It’s African culture. With the buzz of the city and our busy lives we sometimes forget to sit down and listen to each other. Here in the bush, we try to do it every night when there are guests. And even when the cabins are empty, chances are, there will be a fire burning somewhere on the compound to usher in the night. It’s what keeps us going. It is time! A pumpkin from October was boiled down and frozen in November because a very special Birthday deserves pumpkin pie out of season. I like canned pumpkin too, prefer fresh. One slice will be saved to enjoy on the 10th, but the rest will be enjoyed on Saturday with friends. Crust is gluten free, coated with egg wash to prevent overbaking, and covered with aluminum foil for added protection. Also helps the center evenly bake with the edges. The gluten free dough fell apart, crust edges were pieced together and formed.
