On April 28, Romans started the celebrations of the Floralia, an ancient six-day festival dedicated to Flora, goddess of spring, flowers, and fertility. Ancestrally linked to the Sabines, the festival was instituted during the Roman Republic to invoke Flora’s protection on the crops and fields, strengthening the goddess’s cult with the construction of her temple near the Circus Maximus in 238 BC. Sent to Dresden as a gesture to secure an appointment at the Saxon court, this painting and its pendant were commissioned by Francesco Algarotti as gifts to Count Heinrich von Brühl, chief minister to Augustus III. Framed in a varied garlands of flowers, the goddess Flora triumphantly rides on a chariot pulled by winged putti, accompanied by three maidens playing music and dancing in bright colorful robes. Exuberantly staged in an idyllic garden adorned with ancient statues, Tiepolo cleverly praises Count Brühl by incorporating his Neptune fountain in the background, a splendid work that he had commissioned to Lorenzo Mattielli for his Palais Marcolini in 1741, evoking that the city of Dresden flowers under Brühl’s touch just like nature thrives under Flora. EN: Peasants at their Cottage Door is an oil on canvas painting from 1640s by the French Baroque artists Le Nain Brothers. In this painting the approach is unusually stark for the Le Nain brothers. Instead of a landscape background, there is a two-storey house belonging to the peasants, whose relative prosperity is indicated by the glass in the windows. The treatment of the low-life subject is given a totally unexpected dignity. The boy on the right and the old man next to him stare through us into space, and together they counterbalance the large area of pale stone of the house behind them. Into their expressions the artist have distilled a timelessness as far removed from anecdote as possible. #comicbooks Today the Capodimonte museum presented a comic book recounting the story of the Battle of Pavia. Fought almost 500 years ago between the troops of the French King François I and Hapsburg Emperor Charles V, this 1525 battle was a pivotal moment in European history. Chiara Macor and Fabiana Fiengo, the author and illustrator of the comic book, took their inspiration from Bernard van Orley’s 16th century tapestries, which depict many of the battle's key moment on a monumental scale. Several of the panels from the comic are currently on display in the tapestry gallery, allowing for a direct comparison between the two media. The comic book will be discussed at Naples's Comic Con on Thursday April 25, at 17:30. #napolicomiccon2024 #fumetti The English version of the comic, translated by the American Friends of Capodimonte fellow Emma C. de Jong, will be available in the U.S. during the upcoming traveling exhibition of the Battle of Pavia tapestries. Kiyomoto “Sakura” is a piece deeply cherished by the Bandō school. This enchanting composition and choreography were crafted by the late Bandō Mitsugorō X. Ryan Matsumoto will be performing "Shichifukujin Kinoemachi". During the Edo Period, there were three important Kabuki theaters. For the Nakakura-za (present-day lineage of Nakamura Kanzaburō), they performed "Shichifukujin", "Seven Lucky Deities of Japan." For Morita-za (present-day lineage of Bandō), they performed a version of "Shichifukujin" but with "Kinoemachi." After the choreography had been lost for decades, the 10th Bandō Mitsugorō had requested Bandō Ai's teacher to re-choreography this for the Bandō school on some notes that were recently discovered. Falling snow mingled with the black hair symbolizes life's impermanence. Koto musician Shirley Kazuyo Muramoto reinterprets this traditional song with son Brian Mitsuhiro Wong, blurring gender roles.
