Hear me out, on a hike I found what I think might be the something extra cool. What I think is a moa nahele [Psilotum complanatum] growing as an epiphyte on Mamane [Sophora chrysophylla]. CORRECTION: the epiphyte was identified for me as Hulumoa [Korthalsella sp.], a Hawaiian mistletoe. Mahalo @koamatz and @birds_hawaii_pastpresent I’ve never seen this, mamane tends to be more of a subalpine/dry forest species and moa hulumoa I think of more of a wet/mesic forest parasitic plant. To see them together is a new association for my naturalist bingo card. #talknerdytome #naturalist #ephiphyte #hawaiianplant #myhawaii #conservation #sciencegram #wheremybotanistsat

There are several types of ʻŌhelo, all belonging to the Vaccinium genus. Fun fact: even though ʻŌhelo is known as the Hawaiian blueberry, it’s actually related to the cranberry plant! This shrub does well in higher altitudes and can be found on all the main Hawaiian Islands. Their berries range in color from bright red to yellow, and are tart and sweet. ʻŌhelo is also sacred to the Hawaiian goddess Pele, and there is an `Ōlelo Noeau, (Hawaiian proverb or saying), that warns against picking ʻōhelo berries without first offering some to Pele. It’s probably a good idea to leave these berries alone though, since they’re a favorite of the protected Hawaiian Nēnē goose and also because there is an inedible look-alike berry called ʻĀkia! #ohelo #ohelothere #tutorial #nativehawaiianplant #nativehawaiianplantmonth #hawaiianplant #hawaiianplants

Aloha Monday! I usually only take pictures of flowers and palm trees, and I hardly pay attention to Hawaiian plants, but yesterday, on my way home from work, I happened to find my favorite monstera leaves and took a picture. Monstera is a popular plant that often to use designs for Hawaiian quilts. *Monstera Monstera is often used in Hawaiian designs such as Hawaiian quilts, Aloha shirts, and logos. It seems that the etymology comes from the Latin word for monster, and the Japanese name Horaisho is a combination of pineapple and banana, and comes from the taste of the monstera fruit. In addition, we can see that the species name Deliciosa originated from the word delicacy (delicious) and was an edible plant. When the tree (stock) is full, it bears edible fruits. It tastes like a mixture of banana and pineapple. Monstera is a member of the Taro family and is popular worldwide as a houseplant because of its exotic appearance and easy to grow. In Hawaii, the large Deliciosa species are particularly popular and are often planted in the gardens of hotels and public facilities. When observed, it is planted on the north side of a building that avoids direct sunlight. Since it is not a plant native to Hawaii, the number of planted plants has increased and it has become established. It's dynamic to force it on a large tree, so I'd like you to see it. Araceae Monstera genus Scientific name: monstera deliciosa Hawaii name: La'ape English name: monstera Origin: Tropical America --- info by hawaiilifestyle.jp Monstera is a genus of 59 species of flowering plants in the arum family, Araceae, native to tropical regions of the Americas --- by Wikipedia Have a wonderful weekdays!! #hawaiianplant #monstera #hawaiianquilt #lovehawaiianplants #hawaiilover #lovehawaiilife #hawaiiphtographer

Day 5: Palapalai I love this plant but drawing it is always a challenge. There’s so many different species of fern and the little differences (just like people lol) is what makes them special and unique. You can use this general outline for any fern, but take a moment to look at the fern you’d like to draw to find where the small differences are ✨ as for this species, you’ll see it in the leaf shape as well as the types of “hairs” it has going up the main part of the plant! Palapalai is a common ground cover plant, and is kapu (sacred) to the Hawaiian goddess Laka, (goddess of hula), since it’s considered to be Laka’s kinolau (her physical manifestation). Not only is this beautiful lāʻau used to adorn hula alters and dancers, but it has been used medicinally to cure hehena (insanity). #ferns #fernlove #tutorial #drawingtutorial #howtodraw #palapalai #hula #hawaiianplants #hawaiianplant #nativehawaiian #nativehawaiianplantmonth #laulimahawaii #kaulumaika #kakoucollective #drawingtutorials

Day 3: Koa (Acacia koa) This is an endemic Hawaiian tree that can be found in the dry-wet forests on all the Hawaiian Islands except Ni’ihau and Kaho’olawe. See those sickle-shaped leaves on the Koa tree? They’re actually extensions of its stems – not leaves at all! Only keiki (baby) Koa trees have true leaves, but they shed them when they mature. Koa is probably most famous for its beautiful wood, often used for making furniture and jewelry, but this plant can do so much more! It’s keiki leaves can be used to induce sleep, and its bark can be used for dye as well. Not to mention, they provide wonderful shade when used in landscaping and are super easy to maintain. #nativehawaiianplants #nativehawaiian #nativehawaiianplantmonth #hawaiianplants #hawaiianplant #hawaiiantree #treelovers #endemic #koa #koawood #kakoucollective #laulimahawaii #kaulumaika #wahine

Bright kou flowers are so vibrant & I can’t wait to start making more lei with them. Kou was once thought to be a Polynesian introduction, and although it was brought here by early Hawaiians- it was also already here according to evidence found in Kaua’i that pre-dates human arrival. HOW COOL IS THAT? These coastal indigenous trees are found in plenty of other places and include names like kerosene tree (for burning so easily) and Snottygobbles (WHAT?!) Traditionally, the wood was used to make ‘umeke and the leaves were used to dye fishing line and kapa. Lisa Cane Dracaena is from Hawaiian Collection. This plant really conveys elegance and it’s one of the best performers in low-light spaces. A deep green and shiny leafy tree. Lisa Cane is propagated in Hawaii , so it’s grown in lava rock giving it some very forgiving watering requirements. This plant is a Dracaena, and has one of the lowest light requirements of all the plants we offer. It’s great near a window with filtered light or a corner with only artificial light. Do not expose it to direct sunlight . Light cleaning maintenance: Wiping the leaves with a wet cloth . This plant does not need to be pruned unless it meet the maximum size you need. Pets friendly. 🌌 Hello weekend, hello #alohawatercolorstutorial ! 💚Hinahina is a Native Hawaiian plant (Heliotropium anomalum var. argentea) and forms beautiful rosettes that can be found on sandy sites in coastal areas. 💚Not only are they pretty but were also used as treatment for asthma and other health issues, and to make tea. 🌿During the last two months of looking intensely at Native Hawaiian plants in order to figure out how to paint them, I learned so much about the different and many uses of plants in Hawaiian culture. A few tips for this tutorial: ☀️ In between layers, let everything dry so that the paint doesn’t bleed into the next row of petals. ☀️ Let everything dry completely before adding the indigo background. ⭐️ You can add stars with either white gouache, white watercolor or just a white gelly roll pen. Jenni from @secondjenletters has a brilliant guest tutorial showing different methods on how to add stars. It’s on my Youtube channel (youtube.com/thealohastudios) 🎨 📷 🩰 ⚽️ 📚 Next month, we’re gonna do something totally different! The theme will be hobbies. 👉What’s your favorite hobby? Maybe I can create a tutorial inspired by it. Hello weekend, hello #alohawatercolorstutorial 💚 Swipe for some real life impressions of this week’s Kī (Ti) leaf plant! Kī rhymes with key and tea btw 😉 These days Kī leaves are used for making Lei (garlands). 🍲 Similar to the maiʻa leaves we looked at earlier this month, Kī is also used to wrap food in. 🏡 In ancient times it was even used for roof thatching and brewing okolehao, which for all the descriptions I’ve read sounds like legit Moonshine 🥂 🤪 ❤️💚There are different varieties, a more green and a more red one. 👉So for this tutorial feel free to vary the colors if you’d like to go with a more red version. 🖤Add the indigo background after everything else has dried completely. Ko’oloa’ula (Abutilon menziesii) of the Malvaceae. A Critically Endangered Hawaiian endemic shrub. The plant is estimated to have only 450-500 plants left in the wild, but is propagated and will hopefully expand it’s range via botanical gardens. It exists in the wild on Hawaii, Lanai, and East Maui. Like the card says, it spontaneously appeared on Oahu after a construction job, meaning it historically grew here and was native. It usually inhabits dry forest, which has since been taken over by White Leadtree. The plant has typical, yet hairy Mallow leaves, and (usually) red hibiscus flowers pointing downwards. These flowers appear most of the year, and mature into an 8-valved capsule which opens when mature. It grows as an open shrub up to 10 feet tall, and prefers little water with lots of sun #Abutilonmenziesii #Abutilon #endangered #criticallyendangered #endangeredspecies #endangeredplants #plants #plant #shrub #shrubs #endemic #endemicplants #rareplants #rareplant #oahu #construction #hawaii #hawaiian #hawaiianplants #hawaiianplant #botany #botanicalgarden #garden #desert #dry #honolulu #rainforest #forest #nature #hiking

Nehe — Wollastonia lavarum Found across Maui Nui and on Hawai‘i Island, this endemic aster grows in low-elevation coastal and dry-forest ecosystems. Its gray-green leaves are covered in small, stiff bristles, giving them a sandpaper-like texture. The bright yellow flowers stand out, especially when growing on bare lava fields, and are a key nectar source for native insects. ‘Ōhai — Sesbania tomentosa This endemic sprawling plant once grew abundantly in dry coastal shrublands, on cliffs and in forests across the Hawaiian Islands. Today, only a small number remain in protected areas. The flowers range in color from red to yellow, and are an important source of nectar for native pollinators. These drought-tolerant plants can be as small as a shrub or as large as 20-foot tree, and do well as a ground cover in very sunny areas. ‘Iwa‘iwa — Doryopteris decipiens This drought-tolerant fern often sprouts after heavy winter rains, and can be found growing out of cracks and crevices in dry forests and scrublands, and on exposed basalt. After reaching maturity, the lacy ferns dry out and become clusters of unremarkable, desiccated fronds. Common practices between botanic gardens and institutions is sharing plant material. We do this for a variety of reasons but primarily to conserve, save and share plants. The San Diego Botanic Garden has recently received a variety of different plumeria species and cultivars from the Naples Botanical Garden in Florida. Naples is nationally accredited for their plumeria collection through the American Public Garden Association, APGA. We aid them in maintaining their collection by serving as a back-up site in case unforeseen events negatively impact the collection in Florida such as a hurricane. In exchange we get to display and showcase these beautiful plants in our landscape. Right now these plants are still growing in our nursery but keep an eye out in 2023 when we will begin adding them to our garden display for everyone to enjoy! _ #plumeria #flower #blooms #botanicgarden #HispanicHeritageMonth #SanDiego #Encinitas #SouthAmericanplants #plantfacts #garden #SanDiegoBotanicGarden #Hawaiianplant #leis #planthistory #SDBG #NapelBotanicGarden #botanicgarden #garden #NapleFlorida #Florida #tropicalplants #APGA #nuresery

Naupaka Kuahiwi (Scaevola gaudichaudii) Most of us who live in Hawaii are familiar with the beach Naupaka and it was only late last year that I finally got to meet a mountain Naupaka!
