Had to use my imagination for the back side but I think it’s not a stretch to say the medievalists wanted him to have a little butt. Medieval mythical creatures are always a source of great amusement! But if there was one that looked stupider than the rest it would have to be the Blemmyes (also referred to as Blemmy), the headless men! The Blemmyes were a race of headless men believed to exist in Africa. They were half correct about this, the Blemmyes were an ancient kingdom in Northern Nubia. Herodotus was the first one to describe these people has ‘headless’ and it just stuck from that point on, it just became their entire identity! This idea continued long after the kingdom ceased to exist and took on more fantastical depictions. They weren’t just headless but now had their facial features on their chest, because how else would they see or eat?!? The Blemmyes were often illustrated on maps in the areas that had not been thoroughly explored or where fictional lands were believed to exist. As knowledge of the world grew the Blemmyes were pushed further and further to the borders of exploration. Even in the age of European discovery maps would continue slapping Blemmyes on maps showcasing the Americas. The Ottoman Piri Reis included some living in Brazil with some annotations describing them as harmless beings. So where did this mythological creature from anyway? There are a couple of theories. Some have suggested that the Blemmy kingdom in the Nubia might have had faces painted on their shields, so that when they raised their shields to protect themselves the face would align with their chest. Other theories suggest that apes like the Bonobo sit with their shoulders hunched, lowering their head. The belief in Blemmyes lasted for over a thousand years and fascinated many in Europe. They became a symbol for the “other in the margins of a civilised world.”
