When you totally give yourself to silence, your life will automatically be filled with more ease and love. Yet giving yourself to silence is not something you can do through effort; you can’t actually reach silence because you’re not different from it. There’s no distance between silence and you. To be truly in silence, you, as the personal self, must vanish, and that happens when you open your heart and become soft. Only then will you be able to stop fighting against what’s happening in this moment. When your heart is open, you stop creating an artificial distance between you and the rest of existence, and you radically hand yourself over to love. Not the type of personal love that is begging and clinging, but a love that is so immeasurable that nothing can contain it. Love is the absence of all personal traits, all objects, and all forms. The reason why you’re not aware of the presence of this love is because you have too much inner noise and restlessness, which keep you distracted from what is. You may think you want to experience love, while at the same time you’re running away from it. And as long as you’re constantly busy rescuing yourself from too much vulnerability, your internal space remains occupied; love can’t enter here. Love is the result of total surrender, and total surrender is ultimately an act of grace. You can’t do it. But you can create the right conditions for it to occur by befriending the deepest depths of silence.
