I spent an afternoon with Mashikawa “Mashi”—whose family was directly affected by the atomic bomb dropped in Hiroshima. His grandparents perished immediately under the hypocenter of the bomb. His parents sustained grave injury. Born 3 years after the atomic bomb dropped, his family carried the wounds from that day. Friends and communities lost. Rebuilding day by day. What beautiful is the hope & resilience of the people in Hiroshima. Mashi shared photos of his children and grandchildren. He showed photos of him shaking the hands of US Presidents. And he dedicates his free time to sharing truth, lived experience of how the atomic bomb changed his community forever. Paper cranes adorn all over Hiroshima Peace Memorial. It is said “if you fold 1000 paper cranes, your wishes will come true.” There are thousands of these strung together paper cranes made by children and young adults. Made by those who would perish days or weeks after the atomic bomb was dropped—hoping they could have their life before the bomb back. Made by those who echo the story of their ancestors, friends, and family who will not be forgotten. Made for those who see peace as the way forward. Hiroshima. There was no way I was going to Japan without visiting to honor & pay respects to an area that was tremendously wounded by a weapon of mass destruction. As an American, this was a very hard & haunting experience. I wept. Graphic images and videos of the immediate aftermath etched into my soul. Because what’s taught in school is very superficial. A glossing over of the wounds left & that continue to heal. The amount of power, devastation, & unbelievable damage an atomic bomb creates is horrifically ineffable. My Grandparents lived through WWII. They told me of stories of Japanese soldiers coming into to their towns, pillaging their towns. War is complex. It stems from belief. BELIEF ALONE. Belief turned into action. Those actions creating intergenerational pain & wounds that echo for lifetimes. Weapons of mass destruction, shouldn’t be needed. Those who survived the immediate explosion at Hiroshima dealt with having to rebuild. Wounds, pain, disfigurement, disease & illness that only intense heat & radiation could cause. And stories that should not be forgotten. I hope to never hear or see nuclear war come to head. There were many innocents and children annihilated—vaporized—in heat that is 5 times hotter than the center of the sun. I walked through the Hiroshima Peace Museum unable to speak. How could this had been used and tested on people? A silent truth: thousands of Koreans, 12 American POW, and more were all in Hiroshima at the time the atomic bomb was dropped . This morning we get the chance to visit in the #hiroshimamemorialpeacepark to learn and see the historical events on the atomic bomb inverted to this land. The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, during World War II was nicknamed “Little Boy.” It was the first nuclear weapon used in warfare. The bomb exploded with an energy equivalent to about 15,000 tons of TNT, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. 25 participant of the workshop on the training of Green livelihoods program instructed by #unitar and financed by The Goverment of the People of Japan and other stuff from #unitar get the chance to meet with the beloved 91 years old survivor women of this bomb MADAM SADAE KASAOKA SAN as seem in the video. God is great She looks very healthier and great. She shared with us about her little experienced story during and after the bomb. It is really sadness story but always advise us peace is everything. The bombing of Hiroshima resulted in approximately 140,000 deaths by the end of 1945 due to the immediate impact of the blast, heat, and radiation exposure. Japan Tag 2. Nachdem wir uns Oppenheimer im Kino angesehen hatten, war für uns klar, dass wir Hiroshima besuchen wollten. Man kann es sich kaum vorstellen, was dort passiert ist. Am Abwurfpunkt der Atombombe (Bild 3) zu stehen und in den Himmel zu schauen (Bild 4), wo in 600m Höhe die Atombombe explodierte, ist unwirklich. Es waren viele Schulklassen im Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park unterwegs. Eine Gruppe Schüler*innen sprach uns auf Englisch an und bat uns einen Fragebogen, den sie selbst erstellt hatten, auszufüllen. Zum Dank schenkten sie uns zwei Origami-Kraniche, die in Hiroshima eine besondere Bedeutung haben. Hiroshima Peace Park & Museum. Wow, what a well done memorial for the tragic event. They did an incredible job sharing what happened from many first hand experiences, from before the bomb, to when it happened, to right after and then the days, weeks, months after. The whole museum is quiet as people read & listen to the accounts of the event. It’s a very somber, heavy place but they wrap it up with action to bring awareness & hope that something like this will never happen again. The town around the blast site is now full of life, buildings, LOTS of rivers & bridges. It’s encouraging to see how life can blossom from the ashes. I was to sure about posting up about the Hiroshima peace Memorial war museum and putting these pictures up out of respect for all the people who lost there life’s but I guess this is part of human history the first time in human history that a nuclear weapon had been used. I guess it’s also a reminder as to why we don’t need these weapons on earth. The one that blows my mind is the last slide with the video it’s scary to see how many nuclear weapons are still on this earth in 2023 it blew my mind and I’m sure that it will blow yours too. It’s amazing to think how Hiroshima is today and what it has become it’s so beautiful and peaceful but a lot of pain and suffering leading up to what it is today the people went through. All types of radiation sickness leading to all types of different cancers and just what the people went through men women and children. Whole families were wiped out in a blink of an eye. Walking around this place was a humbling experience it made me shed a tear or two I must say it really made me think about all the stuff going on in this world that it’s only a matter of time if or when one of these will be used again. The structure then and now is a reminder for all the things done wrong and the importance of peace. The second, third and fourth picture is a Children's Memorial for the children that perished due to the atom bomb. The origami cranes are a symbol of hope and peace made by people from all over the world. Everyone should visit the peace museum while in Japan, the experience cannot be expressed in words. The third day of the Hiroshima-ICAN Academy’s Hiroshima Session began with a talk from Hiroshima City University Professor Robert Jacobs, who explained the science behind exposure to radiation and how communities and environments around the world have been exposed through nuclear industries. Later, Shoko Hanzawa, Head of Delegation in Japan for the International Committee of the Red Cross, spoke about humanitarian law and the ICRC’s position on nuclear weapons. Nagasaki University Professor Michiru Nishida then spoke to the group about nuclear deterrence theory, highlighting various perspectives and contradictions therein. On the second day of the Hiroshima-ICAN Academy’s Hiroshima Session, participants heard diverse stories of Hibakusha, atomic bomb survivors. The day began with a tour of Peace Memorial Park — thank you to local guides Katsumi Takahashi and Mayu Seto for joining us! We then had a small group exchange with Hibakusha and a Hibakusha legacy successor, in which participants heard various Hibakusha testimonies and later shared the testimonies with each other. Thank you to Kazuhiko Futagawa, Sadae Kasaoka, Toshiharu Goto, and Megumi Mozume for sharing their stories! After that, Hiroshima City University Professor Nurhaizal Azam spoke to the group about exchange students from Malaysia who were killed by the atomic bombing. The Hiroshima-ICAN Academy 2023 #Hiroshima Session has begun! 22 of the 29 Academy participants were able to join in person, with the other seven following online. Day 1 began on October 24 with an orientation in which participants shared their respective countries’ stances on #nuclearweapons and what they hoped to learn from Hiroshima and from each other. Following this, the group visited city hall, where Hiroshima City Mayor Matsui Kazumi introduced the city’s initiatives for peace. Participants later had the opportunity to hear the testimony of #Hibakusha Ogura Keiko — who also kindly joined the group later for the welcome dinner — and visited the Peace Memorial Museum, deeping their knowledge of Hiroshima’s experience of the atomic bombing. I Musei e la storia che questi preservano e raccontano dovrebbero servirci a comprendere, a riflettere, sulla realtà che ci circonda e sul buon agire per noi stessi e per il resto dell'umanità. Purtroppo in senso politico osservo una scarsa sensibilità sulle tematiche della guerra in senso lato, sul dolore e sulla distruzione che essa si porta dietro. Non si può ancora parlare di vera civiltà finché esisteranno armi utili per distruggere il prossimo, così come non si potrà mai parlare di civiltà finché la guerra sarà considerata come un metodo utile per la risoluzione delle controversie.
