When did the story of the Hasselblad camera start? It's widely known that the first Hasselblad camera debuted in New York in 1948, but there is a long prehistory. One of several starting points was when Victor Hasselblad AB was commissioned to design an aerial camera for the Swedish Air Force during the Second World War. In this, Inge Laurin played a crucial role. Working at Erna and Victor Hasselblad's photo shop, Laurin, during his military service at F3, was assigned the mission to find someone for designing a handheld camera for the Air Force. This led him to his employer, Victor, who, in turn, contacted the Aviation Administration's photo section in Stockholm and engineer Olof Hagsten. In the spring of 1940, Victor was commissioned to create two test cameras based on the German Luftwaffe's Völk cameras. Victor rented premises in a car workshop at Järntorget, hired an engineer and a mechanic, and worked day and night together for months. Even though the first presentation failed, Victor eventually received an order for hundreds of cameras – the Ross HK7. Ross AB was launched for production and a new mechanical workshop was established on Odinsgatan. From there the company grew, evolved and finally became the camera manufacturer Hasselblad AB. #NewProjectLaunch We're thrilled to announce the launch of a pivotal project retracing W.E.B. Du Bois' insightful thesis through a digital archive. The site hosts over 300 pieces of crucial anti-slavery legislation from the Thirteen Colonies and the #UnitedStatesofAmerica since the 1600s. This digital resource recreates W.E.B. Du Bois' seminal work "The Suppression of the African Slave Trade to the United States of America, 1638-1870." Based on his harvard thesis, it chronicles federal and state legislation aimed at suppressing and abolishing the slave trade in the United States and the broader Atlantic world. And will feature some more books and letters in the future. Chloe Zehr, an MA student at the @cuboulder, brought this website to life during her studies from 2022 to 2024. Her research blends traditional archival techniques with digital methods, focusing on North American anti-slavery movements, enslaved resistance, race, and gender. The project is based at the Digital Slavery Research Lab under the direction of Prof. Henry Lovejoy (Associate Professor, Department of History, @cuboulder). In collaboration with @walkwithweb, under the leadership of our CEO, Kartikay Chadha, our team has infused the project with our web development, and graphic design expertise. Hope everyone enjoyed the eclipse today! I saw an article showing what San Antonio (my hometown) looked like the last time it experience a solar eclipse, way back in 1878! ☀️🌑 . At that time, the University of Texas (my alma mater) hadn’t yet been established, the mayor was a Confederate Army veteran, and the population was only 20,000 (vs 1.5M today)! 🤠 . It’s pretty cool though, seeing that even back then people were excited by the eclipse. Em 16 de dezembro de 1973, quatro alunos do Liceu de Camões foram detidos pela PSP por terem participado “numa reunião ilegal e abusiva”, realizada numa das salas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. Na cópia do ofício enviado pelo reitor ao diretor-geral do ensino secundário, datado de 1/3/1974, com transcrição de parte da ata do conselho disciplinar sobre o processo instaurado aos quatro alunos, são apresentadas as sanções decididas (repreensão, admoestação ou um dia de suspensão). Segundo o testemunho dado por um destes alunos, Jorge Dias, estavam a participar numa reunião convocada pela MAEESL (Movimento Associativo dos Estudantes do Ensino Secundário de Lisboa), foram libertados no dia seguinte, tendo sido o castigo imediato o terem saído do Governo Civil com as cabeças rapadas (Adamopoulos, S. e Vasconcellos, J. L. F., “Liceu de Camões, 100 anos 100 testemunhos”, 2009). On December 16, 1973, four students from Liceu de Camões were detained by the PSP (Public Security Police) for their involvement in what was described as “an unauthorized and inappropriate gathering” at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon. A letter from the Dean to the Director of Secondary Education, dated March 1, 1974, outlined potential disciplinary actions against the students, including reprimands, admonitions, or a one-day suspension. According to one of the students, Jorge Dias, they were attending a meeting organized by the MAEESL (Student Association Movement of Secondary Education of Lisbon). The students were released the following day, albeit required to leave the Civil Government premises with shaven heads. (Source: Adamopoulos, S. and Vasconcellos, J. L. Our librarian discovered a 1951 issue of Life in our archive. The magazine had announced a competition for young photographers. Among the winners, we find a young Robert Frank, only 27 years old at the time and who, 46 years later, would be awarded the Hasselblad Award for his photographic work. 🏅✨ The jury called him ”a poet with a camera”, and Frank himself declared, ”When people look at my pictures I want them to feel the way they do when they want to read a line of a poem twice.” In addition to Robert Frank, Elliott Erwitt was awarded, who would become a well-known photographer. His photos in the contest depicted his time as a recruit in the United States Army. Ellis Zaytoun married Isabel DeKash in 1914, both of whom immigrated from Hammana, Lebanon in the late 1890s. The couple had six children who survived into adulthood, and in 1964 they celebrated their 50th anniversary as a family. CADERNOS DIÁRIOS Em 1914 ficou estipulado que os alunos se deveriam munir “no princípio de cada ano lectivo, em todas as disciplinas do curso de instrução secundária, dum caderno escolar individual, rubricado pelo professor” (Decreto 896, de 29/9/1914). Mas é em 1930 que surge o primeiro regulamento que torna obrigatório o seu uso. “O caderno diário tem em vista, principalmente: a) Acostumar o aluno a fazer o registo de todos os seus trabalhos, fazendo-lhe criar hábitos de ordem e de arrumação em todas as coisas e nos seus estudos; b) Orientar o ensino, permitindo ao aluno ver, a todo o tempo, a marcha que tem seguido nos estudos, e ao encarregado de educação intervir oportunamente no sentido de corrigir as deficiências do educando; c)Proporcionar ao professor meio eficaz de avaliar os progressos do seu aluno e assim de, com maior segurança, lhe classificar o aproveitamento; […]” (Decreto 18827, de 6 de setembro). No Arquivo Histórico encontram-se capas de cadernos, que eram vendidas na escola, cujas características eram definidas pelo reitor, após auscultação de professores. By 1914, students should have “[a]t the beginning of each school year, for each high school subject, an individual notebook authorized by the teacher” (Decree 896, September 29, 1914). However, it wasn’t until 1930 that the first regulation made its use compulsory. So, “[t]he purpose of the daily notebook is therefore to: a) accustom students to recording all their work, thus promoting discipline and organization; b) guide teaching and enabling the student to self-assess his/her own progress; c) allow for the parent to monitor and correct the student’s shortcomings; d) provide the teacher with an effective means of evaluating the student’s progress, and grade his/her work accurately; [...].” (Decree 18827, September 6, 1930). WW1 Weapons and Armour Pictured above are French and British tanks, cannons, weapons and shells. The sheer size is something that I was so shocked by. Last summer I went travelling around europe with one of my friends. When we were in Brussels we stopped off at the Royal museum of military History. Although the photos above are that of the First World War, I thought that many of you would be interested in seeing these. I highly recommend visiting the museum, it wasn’t expensive to enter and there’s quite the display. Portugal, apesar das dificuldades financeiras e logísticas, instalou vários hospitais de campanha, um dos quais na nossa escola, segundo decisão do Comissário do Governo encarregue pelo combate à pandemia e pelo Diretor dos Hospitais Civis de Lisboa. Na cópia da correspondência expedida do Liceu de Camões, de 11 outubro de 1918, o Reitor informava a Repartição do Ensino Secundário, que parte do edifício do liceu tinha sido «apressada e imediatamente convertida em secção hospitalar». Despite the financial and logistical difficulties, Portugal set up several field hospitals, one of which was in our school. This joint decision was made by the government commissioner in charge of fighting the pandemic, plus the director of the civil hospitals of Lisbon. Μέσα από ευφάνταστες εικαστικές και θεατρικοποιημένες δράσεις, τα παιδιά ήρθαν σε επαφή με εξώφυλλα πειραϊκών εφημερίδων από το υλικό του Ιστορικού Αρχείου, δημιούργησαν το εξώφυλλο της δικής τους εφημερίδας και έγιναν παρουσιαστές των δικών τους ειδήσεων. 📇 Στις 29/11, οι μικρές μας φίλες είχαν την ευκαιρία να γνωρίσουν τα μυστικά της τυπογραφίας.
