Macky and Donut are starting to form a bond! It's such a relief. Donut needs Macky now, and Macky has thankfully decided to open up her heart. Macky is a very sensitive chicken and is hard to win over, she doesn't make friends easily, she can be a very aggressive hen if she doesn't like another chicken, but when she loves, she loves fiercely. Donut is also extremely sensitive, but she is also submissive and doesn't fight at all, she takes on emotions very easily and it affects her. She's a momma's girl and is all about love, well except when I upset her, then she gives me a good old peck or two. Donut is very depressed since losing her best friend, Macky is a bit more withdrawn than usual as well but is handling things better than Donut. The first night aftwr Dodo's passing Donut completely freaked out when I tried to put her on her and Dodo's roost. Dodo had been gone a few daus already and she slept there until the day of Dodo's passing. My theory is that Donut felt my heartache and figured out it had to do with Dodo and realized she lost her friend for ever. She has been sleeping with Macky, and in the mornings she gets into bed with me, she is with me throughout the day again, and is having a really hard time adjusting to life without her friend. She doesn't want to sit by their old haunts at all, and she gets this lost and forlorn look on her face every so often. She is definitely mourning the loss of her friend, and Macky is too, although Macky has a bit more experience in loss. Its hard to see them so sad. Today was an adventure! So I thought I'd share... Mom took me to the garden on her lunch break. I looovvved the pak choy! After work I rode my mom's shoulder to the park, where I got to chase moths and eat grass, clovers, and dandelions. I also made lots of new friends there. I rode on their shoulders and heads, got hugs from them, and even rode stones laps down a slide! When we got home mom let me hang out in the garden again. I ate more pak choy, but also parsley, lemon balm, and Italian parsley. Then after I snuck onto the neighbour's lawn, mom brought me over to the other garden where I tried some basil, kale, and beet greens. Later we went for another shoulder walk, but then when we got inside she made me this cool snack activity! I won't say I like basil, but I did have fun investing and pecking at the leaves and flowers! It was a busy day! So now I'm snoozing on my momma's leg after I preened myself for bed. Tomorrow Macky and Dodo will be getting their new implants, Macky started showing signs her implant has worn off, no egg as yet but I did find suspicious looking yolk deposits on her fluffy chicken butt, I personally believe she started laying internally, I have put her on a very strong antibiotic and so far she isn't showing signs of an infection. So fingers crossed. Dodo has been laying for about two months again, she got her implant to rest from laying eggs, well this time it's a bit different, she started popping out soft eggs and blood filled eggs ( believe you me, it's a shock on your system when there is a ton of blood in an egg ๐ฉ) It's not necessarily bad, but I prefer not to take any chances. Both are on the older side and as these hybrids are prone to infection of the reproductive system, it's best to let them live out their lives egg free, doing what any pet chicken should do, and that is to boss their human around. Donut may freak out tomorrow if all three of us ( Dodo, Macky and myself) aren't here, so she may have to go with us to the vet. Donut has never been left alone without her flock mates ( yep that includes me, she thinks I am a big featherless, snack givingchicken) and she may stress too much if left alone. My two little angels ๐ฅฐ๐ Macky and Donut are constantly asking for cuddles, and if I don't give it to them fast enough they just go and take them cuddles, they sure don't let life wait on them and their needs and wants ๐ I love my babies so very much, it's a wonderful love but also a terrifying love. After losing Noodles and Sassy ( my two very special babies) I have come to realize that chickens are not always the best therapy for mental health. A lot of people will not agree with that statement, but for some of us the loss of a beloved pet is absolutely devastating, the loss grips hold of our heart and soul and we fall into a very deep and dark pit of depression. I always see these posts of how chickens are the best therapy, how they have helped people face and conquer depression etc I was one of those people, I believed it steadfastly, till the first loss hit.... My mental health took a beating like it never had before and then came the second loss, all in one year.... Noodles and Sassy ripped my heart out, my hope was shattered and it took me ages to recover. Chickens make awesome friends, I will never regret loving them, I just wish I knew how much we end up loving them, how intensely we love them.... I wish I knew how fragile these beautiful birds are and how easily they can pass away. I never prepared myself mentally for the loss of Noodles and Sassy. And I invested all of my heart, mind and soul into them with no thought of their passing away. And that nearly was the end of me. Is Donut amd Macky different than Noodles and Sassy..... In many ways yes, I now know that they can leave me in a blink of an eye, I am not investing my mental health in only them, I have other outlets, I now have the knowledge and understanding that these beautiful girls don't live that long. I also know that my love for them equal the love I have for Noodles and Sassy, and that their passing will take me down hard, but I now have support and coping mechanisms in place. ๐๐ Three weeks #savedfromslaughter My two new girls, Brooke Lynn Hytes and Yvie Oddly, are getting accustomed to #retirement nicely. ๐ Theyโve accepted their places in the pecking order, though my previous bottom hen is rather spirited, and Iโve had to step in a couple of times. ๐ All are together in one quarters without division, though Iโm keeping the two coop options, so they can mix and match whatever they feel. ๐ Brooke Lynn is sassy, and her confidence is coming along each day. She was very aggressive with Yvie, which meant constant supervision and separation at times. This has settled significantly over the last few days. ๐ Yvie is the absolute baby. Sheโs the most unsure of everything in the outside world - especially the other chickens. So itโs slower with her. She is comfortable in the house, though. When she lays out in the nest box, she barely makes a sound. But in the house, she lays in the cat bed and then sings to the sky with abandon. ๐ Both are crazy for cuddles.
