Here is Lady getting her implant because turkeys get egg issues too. Lady’s implant seems to last a whole year unlike the poor hens who have been genetically manipulated to lay 300 plus eggs a year when in the wild they would lay around 15. Implants keep our girls alive and healthy, safe from the fatal and painful reproductive illnesses that kill most hens used for eggs. I had the chance to visit @_animalplace , a farm animal sanctuary not too far from my brother’s house. We went with friends and had a short tour of the sanctuary and ended with a picnic lunch. They have 600 acres, one of the largest and oldest farm sanctuaries in the US. 300 of these are left open to wildlife but the other 300 are for the sanctuary. It is always heartwarming to hear the stories of some of the animals and how they escaped from the factory farming system. Imagine being in such close confinement that they can hardly move to being on these lovely open spaces and to have the freedom to exhibit their natural behaviours and socialize and bond with other animals! I have been there before and it somewhat reminds me of my internship at Farm Sanctuary. In 1989, the founder of the sanctuary, Kim Sturla, worked for a humane society where a piglet had been rescued. While they lovingly looked after the piglet, they were also serving pork at a function. Seeing this disconnect inspired her to quit and start the sanctuary. Sadly most farm animals don’t have such happy endings. Unfortunately, the day I was there, it was a bit cold and we interacted with less animals than usual. 🐔 Chicken of the day 🐔 Rosemary came here as an excommercial egg layer. She has a very a slight cross-beak but this doesnt stop her eating and drinking luckily. Did you know egg laying hens are slaughtered at about 18 months old even though they can live years longer? This is all due to greed as the egg productions drops SLIGHTLY so the farmer wants them out to get new layers in 😪 this is the samw for most farms including free-range and organic! Rosemary is lucky. Meet my two rescued hens 😊 Or, as I like to call them, my tiny raptors 🦖 1. Bingy, 4yo, very docile, easily startled and quite the pea brain 😄; loves lettuce and cantaloupe 🥬 (Pendulous crop, on supplements). 2. Ducky, 4yo, very aware of her surroundings, ever so clever, a true leader 💪; loves tomato and grapes 🍅 (Ovarian cancer, fully medicated). 3. The ladies's facility, built with my dad's help 🏠 Both go to their doctor's checkup every two weeks. 💕 Update: My sweetheart Ducky passed away on September 5th 2023. She was at the doctor's clinic. Nothing else could be done for my sweet Ducky. 💕 Update: My beloved Bingy (the last man standing from my flock of 8) passed away on January 8th 2024. She was at the clinic recovering from a crop surgery; she survived the risky surgery, but didn't survive the recovery. May all my ladies be happy together in heaven, with tons of dirt to scratch. Odetta ❤️ our newest member. She was being rehomed as the owner's flock of bantams were not accepting her, and she was being excessively bullied. She was being kept in a pigeon enclosure to keep her safe, and I think she may think she's a pigeon because she spends most of her time on this roof here 🤣. She's incredibly sweet, still nervous but when I hold her and pet her, she closes her eyes and coos. She does not stick up for herself at all so it's going to be long, slow introduction to the flock. She spends time with Dorothea during the day who is very sweet and they get along. We aren't sure what she is. I was thinking sapphire gem, but she has white earlobes and feathered feet (sparsely). Neither of which are features of a sapphire gem. Fingers crossed she's some kind of olive egger! Whatever she is, she's perfect and pretty cool looking, and she's going to thrive here at Rancho Tranquilo. It can be hard to introduce only one lone chicken to a flock, but slow and patient will win the friendships. She can take her time and hang out on the roof until she's comfortable. Our Golden Girls have been with us for just over a year now. Sophia, Rose, Dorothy, and Blanche are thriving in our flock. They have gone from being timid to being sassy, brave and friendly birds. Blanche is the chattiest, Sophia is always trying to get the grass just past the boundary line, Dorothy and Rose are up front and centre for snacks; especially watermelon and corn! We recently rehomed some ex laying hens via #freshstartforhens its sad to see that they are still kept like this even though theyre supposedly happy in barns with natural daylight etc...this one has chosen to move into the log shed away from the others, shes featherless and was so pale...shes got some colour back in her cone already but still has the longest claws...shows shes never been able to scratch around or do any of the things chickens should be able to do, the others are out and about now too but they dont behave how our other chickens do...im glad they will now get the live a good free range life here in Devon. Their eggs are pale and mottled aswell and the shells are so thin...hopefully they will recover in time...poor girls...or lucky girls to have been rescued!! #rescuedhens #freshstartforhens #layinghens #rehominganimals #freed #newstart

Happy Adoption Update! So far this year, we've adopted out and facilitated with the adoption of more than 2,000 rescued egg-farn hens (also a few roosters)! Jenny, Penny, Ruthie & Betty are four lucky ladies who avoided the slaughterhouse and landed in chicken paradise with our lovely neighbor Eva. "Your babies are super happy and doing fantastic," writes Eva. "They dust bathe all the time. My hens are tolerating them. They are so docile; they just stay out of their way.
