I would like to thank the students from BLSU at Liberty High for having me work with them over the past few weeks. We were able to provide these future scholars with mentorship and our Humanize My Hoodie platform to create a capsule collection and raise money for the club for years to come. So thank you to those that purchased these hoodies you really made a difference. The lesson learned was that they didn’t need the school district, public officials & grants to make cool things and raise money for their club. All they needed was a willing attitude, determination and not to quit when things get tough and that’s how they were able to achieve their goals for the club. On Thursday, March 2nd, employees participated in a Humanize My Hoodie Ally Workshop. Led by Seema Pothini, (Director of Ally Management at Humanize My Hoodie), the training focused on valuable knowledge to reduce threat perception, identify micro-aggression, debunk myths of Black criminality, understand allyship, and gain skills to effectively advocate for someone from a marginalized community. In high-school I went on a trip to play soccer in Europe. We (a group consisting largely of young black males) were told we were absolutely not allowed to wear hoodies. If we wore hoodies we would be disciplined. We were told people would perceive us as violent. I love teaching, but these past few years have only highlighted the struggles educators are faced with on the daily. I am tired of jumping through hoops, working through the red tape, and bending over backwards for this profession. I love my students and love teaching, but have lost the desire to continue doing it this way. I am not burned out. I am demoralized. I have been {quietly} using my voice for the past few years and have finally worked up the confidence and have the support to amplify my whispers and to grab the bullhorn to get the job done! I am sharing some of what I am doing so that maybe you can find something that you feel comfortable doing and find your own voice. ✏️Emails to our school board to share a teacher perspective about cov!d and rules/regulations/mandates that put my classroom and life at risk. ✏️Working with @educationminnesota and attending a political conference to elect politicians who vow to support #publicschools, and will hold them accountable for their decisions. ✏️Ramping up for the next get out the vote #GOTV this fall. ✏️Attending a @humanizemyhoodie workshop to become an educator ally. ✏️Accepting the challenge and encouraging all of you stop working for free and only work contract hours (thanks to @willteachfortacos for starting this!) ✏️Stepped up and taken larger roles in my union, and will continue to do so. If there is any other PD you think I should attend or possible ways to amplify my voice let me know! Jason Sole, who was formerly incarcerated on drug charges, is now a professor teaching Criminal Justice at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. In the past 12 years, Sole had been a criminal justice educator. He is currently an adjunct professor at Hamline University where he helps his students to prepare for careers in law and law enforcement. Why would I be trying to work with my oppressors? Bigger police departments. Bigger jails. That’s old thinking. That’s the war on drugs. I’m an abolitionist.
