Fun fact: The reason the Untied States didn't adopt the metric system was due to pirates. In the late 1700's, The United States was using a myriad of different weighting systems. New York was using the Dutch system, while New England was using the British system. It made inter-state commerce very difficult. Enter Thomas Jefferson as secretary of state at the time. He knew of a French system that would normalize every state under one system and alleviate this problem. That system was the Metric. Jefferson sent for a scientist named Joseph Dombey to bring a Kilogram sized weight to the U.S. as well as his expertise. However Domby's ship was caught in a huge powerful storm that blew it all the way down to the Caribbean. Lurking in those waters were of course...Pirates. Domby was taken hostage and later dIed in prison, and the contents of his ship along with the Kilogram weight were auctioned off by the Buccaneers. The major roads are clearly marked on this milestone. Orchard Road is 2 miles away, Bukit Timah, 7 miles away and Bukit Panjang at 10 miles away. In the past, if someone got onto a private hire and tell the driver to take him to 7 miles, he would arrive at his destination, Bukit Timah. This also explains why there is a mall in Bukit Panjang named Junction 10. The first micro lesson I chose to deliver for Becoming a Master Instructor [ Learner Centered Practises ] was on the Imperial & Metric systems of measurements. I had to chose the topic, create an objective statement, gather all the relevant information, create the lesson plan, a practise activity and an assessment and then deliver the f*cking lesson!! It was a lot of work and did a number on my nervous system and stomach but I came out of the lesson with a tonne of confidence. FYI - a ton is both a metric & imperial measurement - tho spelled differently. I started my lesson by taping the Maximum speed limit sign to the board and asking the class to tell me how fast they could go. The instructor said that was a fantastic way to “hook” the students in and was impressed at how much I got the students engaging right away with the content. I explained why it is important to have an understanding of both imperial and metric units as we all encounter both units of measurements during our lives by giving a few expanses. I stayed the objective clearly and made sure that the students knew what they’d be doing and my expectations. We explored different units of measurements by asking the students how tall they thought I was or how much I weighed generating a great group discussion. I hardly used my notes expect for reading : how the mars lunar orbiter burned to prices because scientist/engineers used different measurement units in the UK & US. And then I gave them their practise activity. That’s when I took my first breath and realized the pressure was off of me now and on to the students. I circled around and checked on the students. Some were done quick some were struggling big time! Before I knew it the teacher raised her card indicating I had a few minutes left. I took back the activity asked if there were questions or if anyone needed clarity. Then I handed out the Assesment. I tried to make the assessment as easy as possible by enlarging the metric measurements but some students still didn’t get it haha. Everyone passed tho. 😃 #becomingamasterinstructor

The recent #heatwave has catalysed discussion here in #barcelona where I have been #derisking projects, celebrating #womeninstem, and #spinningtheflywheel with colleagues the past few days. Specifically, we were discussing why #airconditioning is measured in British Thermal Units (BTU). Defined as the energy required to heat one pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit, the BTU is a grotesque Chimera of the Imperial system. So why is it used from London to Buenos Aires 🇦🇷 (despite fever-pitch levels of Anglophobia, no less)? One BTU=1.055KJ, so for what purpose do we persevere with this absurd unit, when a more sensible French-sounding unit is close at hand? It is because Britain has an outstanding reputation for quality and scientific excellence, while the French are renowned for fumbling grand engineering projects like #Concorde. Until 1826, English units (or, Winchester Standards and later Exchequer Standards,) were used as measurement. These measurements were based on a combination of Roman and Anglo-Saxon units of measurement. Different standards were used depending on the place, the the time, and what was being measured. The Weights and Measures Act of 1824 (adopted by 1826) standardized these units in the Imperial System, which England would use until it adopted the Metric system in 1965.
