Fade Away On the days when I am having a mental health dip, I feel like I am losing myself. Like if a gust of wind strong enough were to show up, I would be carried away, like a dandelion. I feel empty. I feel numb. I feel so bad but there is no apparent reason for it that I can see, so this makes me feel out of control and if there is no evident reason as to why I feel like this then how can I fix it. I try to remind myself that these dips are normal for me, and I will get through it, I always do. I am stronger than I give myself credit for. And then, AN EXPLOSION COMES FROM WITHIN US of anger, out of nowhere, usually aimed at our partner or our kids (the one's we love the most). Then? The guilt. Rinse, repeat, recycle🌪 🌈THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT🌈 If, as a kid, you were told not to cry, sent to timeout if you couldn't calm down in time, or punished for crying, (I know that feeling of *sucking your tears back into your eyes* oh-too-well), then you naturally will shove those feelings deep down as an adult too. So, hear this: 👏let those healthy feelings out👏 Release them. You'll feel SO much better. Like a weight lifted off our shoulders. ✨Now? For the kids: Kids’ (especially toddlers’) brains haven't fully developed self-regulations skills. Crying IS their way of expressing - and letting it out is a GOOD thing, rather than shoving it down (sound familiar?)🧠 So, when your kid has a tantrum, don't send them to their room, don't put them in a time out. Be there, encourage those feelings, that healthy release.💌 And yet, there's a difference between allowing the feeling, and allowing the "bad" behavior. We can allow the feeling, but we won't allow hitting, for example. It sounds like this: ✨"Oof, you want to go to the park, but it's not time yet. You're feeling so angry. It's okay to feel angry, you can cry, let it all out. AND, it's not okay to hurt someone. I won't let you"✨ ☀️Short term: Your kid just learned feelings are OK, while also learning it's not okay to hit. As a bonus, when you accept + acknowledge your kid’s feelings, you'll actually see their tantrums decrease in intensity and duration. YEP. That healthy release thing? It works. Let.them.release it. ☀️Long term: Your kid becomes a healthy, well-adjusted, CONFIDENT adult, who lets their feelings out, rather than shoving them deep down and exploding later on.
