German saboteur Lothar Witzke wreaked havoc across the United States, setting off a series of catastrophic explosions in ports and factories as the US struggled to remain neutral during the First World War. Witzke was a young cadet with the German navy who served aboard the SMS Dresden light cruiser before it was intercepted and disabled by the British navy off the coast of Chile. He managed to escape internment and make his way to San Francisco, California, where he contacted the German consulate and began working for them as a courier. But before long he graduated to far more dangerous and destructive missions. He teamed up with Kurt Jahnke, a smuggler, criminal, and fixer. Together the two men became almost unstoppable. They traversed the United States detonating high-tech explosives in factories, ships, and ammunition warehouses. Most of these attacks were written off as accidents at first, and the two men’s extensive preparations and cover stories protected them from discovery time and again. They destroyed the Black Tom Island depot in July 1916 with one of the largest explosions of the pre-nuclear age. They blew up more than 60 tons of gunpowder at Mare Island, CA in July 1917, killing six innocent people. And they later went south to Mexico to foment a potential invasion of the US by Mexican forces. But the two saboteurs finally met their match in an unexpected foe: Arizona journalist-turned-US Army intelligence agent Byron Butcher. Butcher built a network on both sides of the US-Mexican border and homed in on the two men using one of the most effective double agents in modern history. Even as Witzke and Jahnke targeted Butcher for murder, their own most trusted associate was helping to close the trap on them once and for all. This is one of several watercolour sketches made by William Dunn Montgomerie while in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) which was part of a recent donation to the Museum. Montgomerie served in key engagements of the Battle of the Somme with The Black Watch before travelling to Baghdad with the 2nd Battalion in 1917. The artwork he produced in his spare time focused on buildings and natural scenery, as well as the traditional clothing and routines of urban life in Baghdad. Una giornata davvero carica di storia. Individuiamo alcune postazioni e baraccamenti mediante una mappa dell'epoca e decidiamo di effettuare delle ricerche senza pretese in quanto il luogo dista a dieci minuti dall'auto. Quella che doveva essere mezza giornata in un luogo già visitato da altre persone, o almeno è quello che pensavamo si è poi rivelata una bellissima sorpresa: nessun segno del passaggio di altri ricercatori negli ultimi tempi! Ed è così che appena entrati nel bosco, nel primo ripiano di baracca ritroviamo ben tre kappenabzeichen nella stessa buca. Non sono kappenabzeichen qualsiasi, sono tre distintivi a cui siamo davvero legati ! Il 10 armee e il Gruppe Fella sono per noi simboli storici e rappresentazione di quella che è stata la guerra da parte dell'impero austro ungarico nel nostro territorio. Lo stesso luogo ci ha dato, nelle giornate successive, il kappenabzeichen per i reparti sciatori, il distintivo da colletto per volontari carinziani, la fibbia Honved Ungherese, il pattino da ghiaccio, il revolver e i due raccordi interni per scudo da fucile, la macchinetta per realizzare sigarette tutti oggetti che avete avuto modo di osservare nei post precedenti! Lenins Ideen sind keineswegs alt und überholt, sondern aktueller denn je. Sie sind ein unschätzbares Werkzeug in den Händen der heutigen Revolutionäre. Wie Lenin einmal sagte: «Ohne revolutionäre Theorie kann es keine revolutionäre Bewegung geben». Es ist die Aufgabe der Revolutionäre von heute, die Werke Lenins zu studieren und eine revolutionäre Partei nach dem Vorbild der Bolschewiki aufzubauen, um den Kampf für den Kommunismus erfolgreich zu führen. Extraordinaire témoignage de la présence des brigades russes en France ! A la suite d’un accord du Tsar Nicolas II, en décembre 1915, la Russie envoie des hommes sur le front occidental. Ils sont près de 20 000 hommes en 1917. Trouvée dans une tranchée à Cormicy (Marne) le 27 avril 1917, cette icône représente les saints orthodoxes Gury, Samon et Aviv. Traditionnellement offerte comme cadeau de mariage, elle est associée aux saints patrons de la famille heureuse dans la foi orthodoxe. Le 16 avril 1917, l’offensive du Chemin des Dames est déclenchée. A Cormicy, la 3eme Brigade russe doit s’emparer du mont Spin (ou Espin). Faisant d'abord de nombreux prisonniers, elle est finalement dominée. Il y a 2 069 tués ou blessés et plus de 450 disparus. Comme cela est inscrit au dos (d'abord au crayon à papier puis recouvert à l'encre), une fois la brigade relevée, l'icône est trouvée par un soldat français. Il est probable qu’elle ait appartenu à l’un de ceux qui ne sont pas revenus... Notons, que la terre continue de rendre des morts. En décembre 2016, à Cormicy, le corps de soldat russe a été exhumé.
