PERPETUAL NATURE JOURNAL-WEEK OF SEP 3-9 [Ink and Watercolor Painting] Violet Tubeflower / Mini Brug (Iochroma cyaneum) --- I recently came across some interesting vines with deep purple flowers and green leaves, which were covering the entrance and partial roof of a neighbor’s house. The flowers attracted my attention because they are in tubular shape and have a little umbrella-like opening towards the bottom. After researching, I realized that they are native to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. According to an article published by Joy Us Garden, they bloom in spring, summer & fall in the SF Bay Area. The deep purple flowers I saw are about 1.5 inch long although they could grow up to 2-3 inches long. “During the summer months and into early fall, they produce umbel-like, dangling clusters of up to 20, 2"-3", tubular, deep purple flowers. Though they aren’t much to look at yet, this is something I’ve been awaiting for months: the first flowers on Iochroma ‘Royal Queen.’ Whether a form of I. cyanea or a hybrid I am getting conflicting answers on, but this Angel’s Trumpet relative is much like a miniature version of said plants with wickedly toxic chemicals in its cells, fuzzy leaves on thick stems (when properly grown in full sun), and hummingbird pollinated tubular flowers that, in this and several other species, are richly violet. Last week we went down to the Cotswolds for a little break that accidentally turned into a big garden holiday. Obviously I was delighted. One treat to break up the journey south was a visit to @nthardwick. It was my first visit and I was pleasantly surprised at how well-crafted, thoughtful and extensive the planting was. It was hard to pull myself away from the dye/herb/veg garden, orchards, herbaceous beds, stumpery etc.; all framed by the dramatic backdrop of the enormous Elizabethan manor. Here are my highlights: • The subtle finials (??) looming over the borders [photo 1]. • Stretching in the stumpery [photo 2 by @jcalpickard]. • Meadowy orchard area with long, curving mown paths [photo 3]. • A yellow snapshot – Achillea, Cornus and Clematis (unknown sps./cvs.). Absolutely love the sparkling mango-flesh yellow of the Clematis (tangutica?) covering the wall [photo 4]. • Eriolarynx australis – its purple bells stopped me in my tracks. Still not sure if that’s a synonym or Iochroma australe is [photo 5]. • Erupting arms of Deutzia scabra [photo 6]. • House and border [photo 7].

In Privatgärten sehr selten findet man den Australischen Glockenstrauch (𝘐𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘦). Das ist wirklich seltsam, denn es ist ein hübscher, reich blühender Strauch mit vielen blauen oder lila, 5 bis 6 cm langen Trompetenblüten, der zudem sehr einfach in der Pflege ist. Am besten steht er in der Sonne oder im Halbschatten, wo er auch sehr wuchsfreudig ist. Wir schneiden ihn im Winter immer wieder auf etwa einen halben Meter zurück. Er wirft dann auch alle Blätter ab und kann daher völlig dunkel überwintert werden. Also: douze points / 12 Punkte für diese Mini-Engelstrompete👍 ! Namenswirrwarr: der Australische Glockenstrauch hat rein gar nichts mit Australien zu tun, sondern er ist ein Nachtschattengewächs aus Südwest-Bolivien und Nordwest-Argentinien. Diese Verwirrung beruht darauf, dass 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 nicht „australisch“, sondern „südlich“ bedeutet, womit die gesamte Südhalbkugel gemeint ist. In private gardens very rarely you can find the Blue Angel’s Trumpet (𝘐𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘦). This is really strange, because it is a pretty, richly flowering shrub with many, 5 to 6 cm long, blue or purple trumpet flowers, which is also very easy to care for. It does best in sun or partial shade, where it is also very vigorous. We always cut it back to about half a meter in the winter. It then also sheds all its leaves and can therefore be overwintered in complete darkness. So: douze points / 12 points for this mini angel‘s trumpet 👍! Confusion of names: 𝘐𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘢 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘦 has nothing to do with Australia at all, but it is a Solanaceae from southwest Bolivia and northwest Argentina.
