She created a tool called the #MarinersCalculator, however the powers-that-be deemed it unnecessary and only one was made. Un 25 de enero falleció la astrónoma experta en navegación y meteoróloga JANE TAYLOR (1804 - 1870). Fundó una academia de navegación e inventó y distribuyó y reparó instrumentos para la navegación. Nacida Ionn el 13 de mayo en Wolsingham, Inglaterra (la 6ª de 8 hermanos), su padre era profesor en una escuela donde se impartía navegación. Cuando éste falleció dejó una buena fortuna que ella invirtió en su educación náutica. En 1821, trabajó para el negocio de su hermano manejando sus finanzas debido a sus habilidades matemáticas. En 1831, se casó con George Taylor (que tenía 3 hijos) y gracias a él, abrió una Academia Náutica para oficiales del servicio comercial. Con él tuvo 1 hijo. Publicó ‘Tablas Luni-Solares y Horarias: con su aplicación en astronomía náutica; que contienen un método fácil y correcto para encontrar la longitud, por observaciones lunares y cronómetros; la latitud, por doble altura y tiempo transcurrido, el azimut, amplitud y tiempo real’ donde proponía una nueva fórmula para determinar la posición global. En 1834 patentó su Calculadora del Marinero, que no aprobó el Almirantazgo por ser de una mujer. Publicó mejoras en sus fórmulas en la II edición del libro Principios de Navegación Simplificados y de Tablas Luni-Solares y Horarias gracias al hidrógrafo Francis Beaufort, que impulsó la aceptación de su trabajo en el Almirantazgo. Su academia se convirtió entonces en la recomendada por la East India Company, Trinity House y El Almirantazgo. Trabajó por la seguridad de los marineros con el diseño de nuevos instrumentos de medida, en la creación y gestión de una escuela de navegación, en nuevas ecuaciones para determinar la posición global, en libros sobre teoría de la navegación y configuraciones estelares o en investigar sobre la confiabilidad de las brújulas, por lo que el rey de Prusia y Holanda le otorgó una medalla. En 1853 su marido murió y empezaron sus problemas económicos. Enferma de bronquitis, se fue a vivir con su hermana en 1870 donde falleció. There weren't many places in Stanford that Arlis Perry felt at home. She had just moved from Bismarck, North Dakota, with her new husband, Bruce Perry, who was studying at Stanford. The iconic Stanford Memorial Church, however, was Arlis's safe place. It was somewhere she could go whenever she was feeling lonely or homesick. Naturally, it was where she went on the night of October 12, 1974, after an argument with Bruce. Nobody could have foreseen the horrors Arlis would endure that night in the place she felt most at peace. Was there a Satanic motivation behind Arlis's murder? Or was she just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Stanford was no stranger to brutal slayings of young women. This episode will also look at the murders of Leslie Perlov and Janet Taylor, who were murdered in 1973 and 1974, respectively. Their murders, like Arlis's, would go unsolved for decades. In this showstopping garment we see a blending of British motifs (can you spot the goldfinch and pheasant perching on the twigs and leaves in the silk design?) with Japanese design traditions. . The Kimono, meaning ‘the thing to wear’, is a dynamic and impactful garment that has inspired and influenced style in Japan and the rest of the world since the early 17th century 👘 . And this was certainly true in the 1970s in London when designer Bill Gibb created this silk satin ‘kimono coat’ with a charming print featuring roses, rosehips, thistles, birds and butterflies 🦋 The ‘Jubilee’ print was designed by Janet Taylor, to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of HRH Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. Bill Gibb used this fabric to create a kimono that conjured up a fantasy British landscape, complete with purple thistles symbolising his native Scotland. . Style icon Bianca Jagger was photographed wearing this design in the 1970s, with the kimono coat apparently held together with a safety pin! 🖇️ .
