I love the light at sundown in late spring and early summer. One of the benefits of living in Tokyo is that we walk a lot. This allows us to sense and experience the changing scenery, seasons, and scents in a way that people who live in suburbs or rural areas and rely on cars rarely do. My brother-in-law is a well-known local architect who specializes in traditional methods known as Do-Miya-Daiku (堂宮大工). I found a unique Shinto shrine near the Tokyo Bay area that pays homage to both Shinto deities and Buddha. This shrine is a remarkable example of the syncretism of Shintoism and Buddhism, known as Shinbutsu-Shugo (神仏習合). In the past, people in Japan seamlessly believed in both faiths, with most commoners not even considering them as separate religions. However, after the Samurai era, the two religions were forcibly separated by the new government. In many Shinto shrines across Japan, you’ll often come across small wooden tablets hanging in the main areas, known as Ema, which translates to ‘picture horse.’ Originally, affluent locals would offer real horses to these shrines. Over time, this practice evolved into presenting a wooden plate with a painted horse, along with a monetary donation. Nowadays, Ema serve as small wooden plates on which people write their wishes. Most new houses and buildings in Japan are designed to withstand earthquakes, using various ideas to support their structure. For example, this apartment has x-shaped metal beams inside the walls. In case of a big earthquake, the entire building can sway and absorb the shock, preventing collapse. Unfortunately, many old houses in Japan are not earthquake-proof. We should learn from the collapse of numerous old wooden houses in the northern region during the earthquake on January 1st, 2024. 😢🙏 Yoshi @japangrayline_inbound #japanstructure #japanhouses #earthquakeproof #earthquakeresistant #japanearthquake #japanarchitecture #housebuilding #tokyolocal #tokyotour #japangrayline #tokyotourguide #tokyoprivatetour

During our recent Mt. Fuji bus tour, the driver suggested a stop at Kitaguchi-Hongu-Fuji-Sengen Shrine. It was my first visit, and everyone enjoyed it. According to legend, the shrine was established by Yamato Takeru in ancient times. The 200-meter approach to the shrine was lined with centuries-old cedar trees, creating a sacred atmosphere. Passing under the huge red wooden Torii gate, one of Japan’s largest, we solemnly reached the main hall, built in the 18th century. Next to it stood a significantly tall cedar tree named Taro Sugi, over 1,000 years old. In the past, the shrine served as the starting point for mountain worshippers climbing Mt. Fuji, and today it is recognized as part of UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage.
