In Term 2, Week 3, Noosa District SHS Year 9 and 10 History students had the opportunity to listen to Lyndon Davis – a Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi man. He shared his local knowledge and family stories. Year 9 students are studying a history unit called ‘Making a Nation’, where they can choose to focus on topics like Convicts, Settlers, Frontier conflict and South Sea Islanders. Lyndon was able to give students an insight into the life experiences of his South Sea Islander and Aboriginal forbears in 19th and 20th century Queensland. Lyndon was born and raised on the Sunshine Coast and therefore is an expert on events; places; and people: ‘Blackbirding’; Murdering Creek; and Dundalli. My amazing daughter opening NAIDOC week 2023 for our little kindy friends last year. It was very special for everyone! Being in education, some terminology from children I often hear is "they (First Nations peoples) use to live here", "they (First Nations peoples) aren't here anymore," so it is really important to choose our words carefully when talking about past history to change this perception, because my people are still here, still surviving and still strong! For these kindy children, they were able to witness this first hand through a peer! They can see that culture is still thriving through our kids. Kabi Kabi and Djindubari Country on Yurun (Bribie Island) 🌊 . . Yesterday was Survival Day in so-called Australia. Coinciding with the day the ICJ delivered its ruling for provisional measures in Gaza . . I've been reflecting on and reframing my thoughts and feelings on the ICJ ruling. I unequivocally stand in solidarity and support with colonised peoples and their resistance against oppression and injustice . . A helpful perspective for me in trying to understand the legal and political language being used and stay positive was recognising that a 'ceasefire' is what is demanded in situations of armed conflict (ie, between two states with military forces) . . In a genocide, what's demanded and what has been ruled here is an immediate end to 'all genocidal acts' (including killing and causing harm to protected groups). This has a broader scope than a ceasefire - people can still be starved and cut off from aid and medical care in a ceasefire . . I understand that the Occupying Forces will ignore the ICJ rulings and spin propaganda. These provisional measures however are a call to other countries to meet their obligations under International Law by stopping an entity now officially accused of genocide by the world's highest court . . I am sharing information in my stories and saving ICJ content in highlight 15 in my profile. Please have a look if, like me, you are trying to make sense of the rulings and explore perspectives on why there wasn't demand for a ceasefire . . And now onto farmers with a little more growing experience: specifically @thefallsfarm, a family-owner farm that’s been growing the good stuff in the hinterland of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast for a decade. In 2022, the Falls Farm team bought a historic local pub and turned it into @mapleton.pub - a new-school pub serving nourishing comfort dishes using local ingredients and - of course - veg from the farm. Exhibit A: crudités with a pumpkin parfait. One of the great lunches of 2023, not least because I got to share it with some visiting American pals. Not Art related but this is one of my greatest creations My beautiful, kind, funny, loving and humble son Nullen graduated year 6 last night 🥹🥹💙💙 As you all know Nullen is on the Autism Spectrum level 3 and was non-verbal for most of his life and he’s now partially Nonverbal and going from strength to strength and as some of you may know Nullen hated school he would always try to stay home or come to work with mummy but since being home on country around family, culture and Art and being at this amazing special school he’s been really enjoying it and actually interacting with his classmates, getting awards and learning so much so it’s a big thing that we have made it to year 6 and that he graduated after he received his year 6 certificate on stage he looked over at me, his nan nan and Britney his beautiful support worker and yelled “I DID IT” and everyone cheered and clapped it was so emotional im so proud of him 😭🥹🥹🥹💙💙💙💙 @autistic_and_deadly @iam_the_lioness_ #autisticanddeadly #gubbigubbi #kabikabi #dubbiwarra #kukuthypan #guguyimithir #butchulla #cobblecobble #southseaislander #graduation #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismfamily
