The Hollybush Project are hard at work with their own potting on, getting seedlings ready for the Plant Sale on 19th May. Elsewhere on site, we have a woodwork course starting, the TCV leadership team visiting, and we’ll have a group of language assistant dropping by later for a tour. Delighted to announced we are going to be part of @kirkstallbrewery ‘s Great Exhibition of Prize Ales! We delved through the history books and come up with three new beers especially for the occasion. It just so happens that our brewer Alex’s ancestors were the landlords of Kirkstall Bridge Inn back in the 19th century when it was called The Horse and Jockey. Their listed profession was a Victualler and they took over the pub in 1817. The story behind the Hornblower’s Poker? The Boot and Shoe Beerhouse was a pub on Back Lane in Horsforth in the 19th century and T he landlady was a Mrs Hornblower’s. One day a gentleman from the city of Leeds had made his way to Horsforth who got into a disagreement with the landlady who proceeded to hit him in the face with her poker, at which stage Mr Hornblower arrived, took the baby from Mrs Hornblower’s arms and offered a £5 bet to anyway that would take it that she would beat the gentleman in a fist fight.
