By George: St George in the East at Shadwell is one of a mighty range of churches by Nicholas Hawksmoor that stretches from Bloomsbury to Greenwich: there are seven all told, and each one of them merits close inspection. The catalyst for this surge in construction was the 1711 act of parliament which proposed fifty new churches to meet the needs of London’s surging population. Back in those days governments didn’t always fulfil their promises, and only fourteen new churches were built, but as 50% of them were Hawksmoors, London did alright, even if more souls ended up in trouble on Judgement Day. St George’s was built 1714-29 and is a massive piece of what Ian Nairn described as “Hawksmoor’s bizarre poetry”. Nairn continues: “This is probably the hardest building to describe in London ... This is a stage somewhere beyond fantasy, which is always comfortably related to common sense: it is the more-than-real world of the drug addict's dream.” The church roof and interior were destroyed in bombing in 1941, but the walls, tower and pepperpot finials survived. Eventually in 1964 a modern church was built (alongside some flats) within the shell of the old one. It rather looks as though the newer church has a damp problem. The old mortuary in the churchyard later served as a nature study centre, but it too looks worse for wear. St George in the East rises above everything around it like a giant ship among tugs; it looks superb from the Surrey bank of the river. Pearl and Mizanur's Memorial Garden next to Shadwell station on bus route 100. The date was 5 March 2023. A fire raged in a housing estate in Shadwell that was so severe, it took 30 firefighters two hours to control it. The source of the fire was a flat on the fourth floor with only two bedrooms, housing 18 people, mostly students and delivery drivers. The likely reason for the fire was a faulty e-bike battery. Owing to the over-crowding in the flat, not all of them could escape the fire. One of the residents, 41-year-old Mizanur Rahman, died in hospital from his injuries. It’s a miracle the others all survived. As a result of this tragedy TfL, who own the land adjacent to the block of flats where the fire took place, allowed the land to be converted into a memorial garden for Mizanur and for a lady called Pearl who had lived in the next door flat for 50 years and who had died of COVID. The garden is only open to residents except on Sundays, when it's open to the public for a stroll, to buy some of the plants grown here and a cup of tea. I will be sharing a few new images this week taken from a slower project made in East London. Primarily, this work is about Limehouse, Shadwell and Whitechapel. These areas in East London have a unique character and history of their own. While I ended up living there by chance, I still return to this space with a sense of familiarity and a personal interest. I have created a set of alternative process prints from my film negatives to enhance the aura of the imagery. How’s this for a skyline? As well as a large lantern tower, St George-in-the-East boasts four 'pepperpot' turrets, so-called because of their resemblance to a traditional pepper shaker. Not content with more than the usual number of towers, this Grade I listed church also has more than the usual number of entrances – with no fewer than nine doors!
