Leoné Potgieter has been a guide at Simbavati Amani for almost a year, with 11 months of experience under her belt. Her favorite animal to track is the white rhino because fresh tracks almost guarantee a sighting. One of Leoné's most memorable experiences as a guide came when she hosted a visually impaired guest who had been born without sight. The emotional impact of this encounter was profound for Leoné, heightening her appreciation for experiencing nature fully every day. Nature truly delivered during the guest's stay, with a lion roaring right next to their vehicle, African wild dogs and hyenas vocalizing and running around with the remains of a scrub hare, and the myriad smells of the bush—some pungent, others intriguing. They heard elephants rumbling and playing in the river, and even encountered a large herd of buffalo, sensing their presence as they moved through thick vegetation. This experience was not only deeply rewarding but also challenging for Leoné, who, as a relatively new guide, felt driven to excel in her role. We woke up at our backpackers welcomed by Zebras before we even head out to Crocodile bridge gate at Kruger Park… only to realise minutes after we left a leopard walked through the backyard of our accommodation 😂 But, we saw lions on day 1 and many elephants, giraffes, Springbuck, Kudus, Water buffalo and so many other animals and birds.
