Tomorrow April 29 is the 32nd anniversary of the most destructive urban riots in American history, the April 29th, 1992 Los Angeles Riots. For Korean Americans, it was and still is the most tragic historical experience in korean-american history. One of the renowned Asian American historians and college professors, Erika Lee reached out to me for my documentary photos of the 1992 Sa I Gu(4.29) when she was working on "Made in Asian America" history book for young people. The slaying of 15-year-old LATASHA HARLINS #onthisday in 1991 was a flashpoint of racial disparity in L.A. that, paired with the Rodney King beating + trial, conflagrated in the 1992 riots. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1991, 15 year old #LatashaHarlins placed a bottle of orange juice in her backpack and approached an LA convenience store counter with $2 in hand to pay. The owner accused her of theft and grabbed her bag. Harlins threw the OJ onto the counter and turned to walk out of the store. The owner, #SoonJaDu, drew a pistol and shot her in the back of the head. A judge gave her only probation for voluntary manslaughter, not prison. The shooting came shortly after the #RodneyKing beating; both contributed to the #LARiots.
On this day 33 years ago… Latasha Harlins (January 1, 1976 - March 16, 1991) was a 15-year old Afrikan girl in America who was fatally sh0t in the back of the head by Soon Ja Du a Korean convenience store owner in Los Angeles, CA on March 16, 1991 who falsely accused Latasha of trying to steal a $1.79 bottle of orange juice. Latasha died holding the $2 intended to pay for the orange juice. Du was tried and convicted of voluntary manslaughter largely due to the entire incident being recorded on security camera. Du was sentenced to 10 years in state prison but the sentence was suspended by Judge Joyce Karlin and Du was placed on 5 years probation, given 400 hours of community service, ordered to pay $500 in restitution and Harlins’ funeral costs. This sparked outrage in the Black community in Los Angeles and was determined to be a catalyst to the 1992 L.A. This was one hell of a day idk how many bricks I dodged and how many angry people I shot photos of but i do know that it was interesting to me who was the most angry, it wasn’t the black people of Los Angeles. In this photo you see more white people than anything. It was interesting to be because the blame was shifted towards blacks for all the chaos but it’s not what I saw at all on the ground. 1992 - CB4 with Phil Hartman and Chris Rock. The movie was one of the first rap spoof comedies and had just about everyone in the rap biz making guest appearances. Lots of fun to be on this set. This movie was filmed immediatley after the LA Riots. The movie was a parody of NWA and the rap scene in general. That's me arresting Chris Rock on stage for performing a forbidden rap song "Sweat of my Balls" with his band CB4 (Cell Block 4) I'm only in the movie for about 3 seconds. Filmed at Paramount Studios (Summer 1992) Phil Hartman #rip was a very nice man and very friendly. He was a regular on Saturday Night Live at the time. He didn't hide in his trailer. He hung out with everyone and talked. By March 1992 I'd moved on with life and sold my truck. Because I was in the Actor's union (Screen Actor's Guild) I was able to get some of the better paying non-speaking roles. This was my new gig. I played aliens cops doctors civilians etc. It wasn't bad work hanging out on movie sets and eating free food. I'd often take food home with me. The pay was good with lots of overtime and extras. And I had a union backing me if there were any disputes about pay. No longer did I worry about my truck breaking down. I had a pager with voicemail. No cell phones yet in 1992. My overhead was low. I rented a room from a friend. That same summer of 1992 I started writing scripts in my spare time and taking notes while on set. Later, Rhonda enlightens Billy by having them go to South LA to witness the aftermath of the riots and how people there are rebuilding and moving forward positively. Billy gets a call from the police that they arrested the guy, but after his enlightening, he tells Rhonda that he doesn't want to press charges because now it feels weird. But Rhonda tells him he should do it, so Billy goes to the station and IDs the robber. Billy gives an elderly woman and her groceries a ride to South LA (known as South Central back then). His cab then gets jumped and he gets robbed. He goes to the police station to report it, and the detective tells him that he shouldn't go to that neighborhood again. Billy tells him that he has seen the robbers hanging out at a fast food place nearby and that the cops can find them there, but detective isn't interested. Billy is angry, so when he gets back to MP and tells the gang what happened, he makes a disparaging remark about Black residents in South LA (this is 1992 post-LA Riot). February 1992 - Los Angeles was experiencing record rainfall and flooding. There was no heater in my 9th floor apartment. One of the many reasons I no longer wished to live there. Burbank, just over the hill from Hollywood, was experiencing record flooding.
