On this day in history… on April 29, 2004 (twenty years ago), the World War II Memorial opened in Washington, DC. The memorial is to the east of the Lincoln Memorial and just across the street from the Washington Monument. It was several decades in the making, and several Hollywood actors, like Tom Hanks, were among its most vocal supporters. It was partially funded by the federal government, but it was primarily built by donations. It’s built from granite and bronze and each granite pillar represents a U.S. state or territory that sent troops as part of the war effort. At the back of the memorial, there are 4,000 gold stars above a pool. Each star represents 100 Americans that died in the war. President George W. Bush dedicated the memorial and opened it to the public. Daniel Chester, Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC, 1922. A Neoclassical temple to commemorate the great American President is located at the National Mall. Chester designed the large statue or Lincoln seated in the temple. Inside along the walls are inscribed are 2 of Lincolns most famous speeches, The Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address. Nearly 2 years ago I took a trip with my parents, grandparents, and my great aunt. I was in the process of potentially having gastric sleeve, but hadn't fully decided yay or nay. When we flew from slc to New York and I had to ask for a seat belt extender, it clicked. I couldn't keep going on my own.
