Facilitated a Listening Circle on Managing Difficult Emotions and it was such a warm experience! 🌻💗 We created some ground rules before starting, such as confidentiality, being respectful, non-judgmental and actively listening. We then went on talking about different prompts such as what are difficult emotions, which difficult emotions does each person feel and in which situation and at the end also discussed some coping strategies of how everyone manages these difficult emotions. The wellbeing of our young people is very important to us at Circlewise.They are our future. A governmental report came out last month which shared a framework for supporting the wellbeing of our young people, recognising that mental health in early life influences future mental and physical health as well as their life chances. The report shares a framework of areas of influence on their wellbeing on a personal, interpersonal, community and wider environmental level. It is unsurprising, and yet heartening, to see that relationships feature prominently in every aspect- the relationship we have with ourselves, each other and the natural world. This is what our circles are about, cultivating these relationships for people and planet to flourish. It may come as no surprise that we are big fans of circles. We’d like to share with you a few reasons why they are so close to our hearts: *with circles there is no beginning or end, there’s no position that is more elevated, there is no hierarchy. Circles embody a fundamental belief of ours: that every person, every voice is equally important. *Circles also represent the cycle of the day and the turning of the seasons. In our modern world, we can forget to be in the stiller times of autumn/winter when there is an emphasis to be out there in our spring/summer, yet every season has its own qualities and energy, and all are so necessary. For those of you who have recently joined us, here’s a bit about our inspirational founder Heidi Rose Heidi was inspired to set up Circlewise after she saw the impact of circles on young people’s emotional intelligence and well being in the schools council program she was involved with many years ago in California. She was fortunate enough to be living and working at the Ojai Foundation - which is the teaching centre for The Way of Council and puts circle practice at the core of everything they do. After 30 years of facilitating circles and experiencing the transformational use of circle practice in this and other communities, she set up Circlewise, to bring these skills to schools, groups and individuals in Devon. Over the years she has brought deep listening circles to a variety of settings in person and online, from family ceremonies, to the school curriculum, one to one, therapeutically and in her own family and marriage. She has a passion and devotion to the power, wisdom and simplicity held in the ancient practice of sitting in a circle, listening and sharing from our hearts. Your donation has helped nonprofits in Tulsa fulfill their mission for good. As a fellow women leaders in the 918, you understand the need for more "good" in our community. We read one of @emoryhall poems at Mother Nurture today, since then I have reflected on how many women have I been during my mothering life. And whilst thinking I felt the sensation of shame and sadness that I wasn’t a wiser or stronger or calmer woman when navigating the early years of motherhood. And then I remember I was learning how to love and care for my baby without guidance, without a village and without anyone mothering me. Like so many of us. And I remembered that I did my best and I loved with a primal ferocious force. But forgiveness is hard, maybe harder when we are forgiving our past self. But it’s so powerful when we do, and the space that is left has the opportunity to be replaced with softness, gratitude and peace. Facilitated our very first Listening Circle and it was such a warm experience!🫂💛 We created some ground rules before starting, such as confidentiality, being respectful, non-judgmental and actively listening. We then went on talking about different prompts such as what are difficult emotions, which difficult emotions does each person feel and in which situation and at the end also discussed some coping strategies of how everyone manages these difficult emotions. On the occasion of Mental Health Day on October 10th, #PathwaysFoundation launched a new initiative #Listeningcircles with the students of Harkadas English Medium School in Bhawani Peth, Pune. Teamed up with Satyen, my Listening course mate and founder of Listening and Listening Circle Potential Project (LLcPP), to host Listening Circles at MIT World Peace University for the dynamic students of their Psychology department. In addition to these circles, we immersed ourselves in practical listening exercises and embodied listening practices. Engaging with these psychology students, driven by their passion to enhance well-being in their immediate surroundings and offer mutual support, was truly heartwarming. Their energy and Aatman, the psychology department club's volunteer team's exceptional organizational skills, left us in awe. A special shoutout to Zainab Jamaly, an LLcPP intern who co-facilitated her first listening circle and excelled! 🙌 We're grateful to Prof. Abhijit Chore for recognizing the importance of dedicated listening spaces and inviting us to his department. The Listeners, the trained volunteers of Connecting Trust listen carefully without interrupting the ladies, without being judgmental. Last Friday we facilitated the listening circle in HSR Layout, Bangalore on 'fear and hopes in relationships'. ❣️ A lot of themes around losing self-identity, beliefs that a lot of external factors mess up our relationships, finding motivation in relationships, defining self value and communicating a list of non-negotiables in a relationship, societal conditioning around 'oneness', confrontations and standing up for something, came up. Much grateful to everyone who participated with a lot of strength through vulnerability, and for being kind and truthful to yourself and others. Today is the third and final post in our mini-series about what we learnt from May’s Listening Circle This feedback is specifically on social, emotional and mental health needs 🩵 Parents/carers felt these areas were not as often collectively categorised but that by grouping them together it was helpful as it shows they are as important as speech, language and communication 🩵 Social needs were explored in our conversation - children have individual and specific needs in this area e.g. some children need to be away from others for periods of time e.g. some children have difficulty understanding social cues so developing relationships is challenging 👉 Friendships play such a crucial role in a child’s ability to learn but teachers often don’t want to “wade in” to friendships at school because it’s not curriculum 👉 Having open discussion in the classroom about things like 🔹keeping a distance 🔹 literal explanations 🔹 empathy can help everyone have a better understanding of divergent needs 👉 We know this is a complex area but in encouraging discussion around this we aim to improve understanding 🩵 Children/young people are less empowered than adults to “control” their needs on this area e.g. An adult could leave the room if a situation was too overwhelming. But a child cannot do that in the middle of a lesson at school for example 👉 Giving a child control is some situations can be extremely helpful e.g. Leaving the dining hall at lunch time if it is too busy and loud 🩵 We talked a lot about spending time and energy creating a better environment in the first place v dealing with the consequences should those needs not be met. The former is worth it every time (at home, school, everywhere) 🩵 Parents/carers strongly felt the connection between neurodiverse children and challenges around mental health. We recently held our third Listening Circle and today is the second post in a series of posts on feedback from that session We are introducing themes to the Listening Circle discussions so that we are able to get feedback in specific areas and one of those themes from last time was Speech , language and communication This is what we learnt 🩵 These areas are connected and understanding that improving access to one of these can significantly improve outcomes in another 👉 This is a key thing at school especially (because often at home these things have already been navigated…albeit often without realising it) 🩵 Having a support network is a huge help - it gives a sense of “we are not alone” 👉 Rather than relying on finding other children in the same class who are also neurodivergent - it allows parents and caters to share stories and strategies 🩵 Considering the cross over into non-neurodivergent children was helpful to see how expectations are key to unlocking access 👉 Moving our narrative to wanting to provide the best environment for the individual child is easy when the behaviour is seen as externally prompted 👉 We are applying this same narrative where the behaviour in internally prompted and parents welcome this because their own experience tells them this works (without having to rely on expert opinion) As ever we would love to know your thoughts: 👇 Comment below 📩 DM this page 📧 Email us at [email protected] #ListeningCircle #ListeningCircles #ListeningCircleFeedback #YourFeedbackMatters #SpeechAndCommunication #Language #SupportNetwork #Neurodivergent

We recently held our third Listening Circle As ever it was full of amazing conversations We also presented our first resources for some valuable feedback from parents and carers We’re now refining those resources based on that feedback - so more to follow soon on that! Way of Council is a modern form of the ancient practice of sitting in circle sharing stories from our lives. It is a ceremony whose origins arise from nature and the reciprocal way of our relationships with the natural world. In Council we hold that all voices are needed to tell the truth of the whole, and the deepest wisdom may be held by the quietest person. This day is an opportunity to experience the deep sense of connection that comes from speaking and listening wholeheartedly: 'from the heart' We will explore the origins of Council, setting up the Council container, and some of the many Council forms. Sara Drew has completed training as a Carrier of Council and runs a regular Council group. She has extensive experience as a trainer and group worker and also works as a therapeutic counsellor, both indoors and with nature as guide.
