I was reminded today through a series of incidents that although I have no control of this virus, no control over when it will be safe to make live theatre in person again, no control over my work in the ways that I am used to, I could still make decisions. Like, big decisions. Decisions that go off the charted and agreed-upon course. Reminder: We can always make another move. Dream up a new possibility. A new way forward. Reminder: You can also just shift to the side. Or in place. Yeah, you can also choose to stay right there until you are more ready. I know I (@alexandrameda) needed to stand in stillness for a few weeks before making any kind of decisions about productions, about the work in development, about our 20th-anniversary events. Because who cares about that kind of stuff when you can feel the weight of losing so much human life. When you know your community is dying on the frontlines - not just now but historically, but right now with a spotlight.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But today, I said I can care about all of that and grieve, and organize, and support while ALSO choosing to mess things up in my corner. Make a sharp right. And instead of feeling more fear, I felt lighter. I felt more focused. I felt that beautiful thing called #hope. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Not everyone will be able to turn right with me on the team. It will change things for our project and our season and maybe even how we serve. But we have to allow things to ebb and flow as they will and decide when we ride the current we are given, and when we will be the captain of our ship. You all already know this next featured storyteller, Luna West Ensemble member Kelley Williams (@afrobohemiannymph) grew up in Altadena, California and attended Pitzer College in Claremont, California where she earned her Bachelor's in International and Intercultural Studies with an emphasis in World Religions. After she graduated from East 15 Acting School in England to earn her Masters in Theater, her one -woman show, “Lovin’ Chocolate” was nominated for a NAACP Theater Best One Person Show Award in 2013. She later worked as a Writer/Researcher for Bill Duke’s 2015 documentary “Light Girls”, exploring the issues of colorism within the Black community. Kelley is a company member of Downtown Repertory. Her debut performance was a witch ( naturally) and Lady MacDuff in “Macbeth” for their Sierra Madre Summer Series. She recently performed in Downtown Rep’s “The Assisination of Edgar Allan Poe” and is thrilled to perform later this year in their upcoming horror immersive show. Next in our “Essential Journey to Jefa Status Dictionary” is the word, cultivate. But we don’t want to unpack the building of new skills meaning today. Right now we are struck with the agricultural definition: to prepare the land for use for crops or gardening. The miracle is that we are able to do so over and over again-- in spite of our surroundings. No, really. We have missed posting, creating and sharing what is going on in the world of luna here on @instagram. We haven't posted in months in spite of the fact that there was a ton going on! In Nov/Dec we went to #knoxville TN for a regional convening produced by the New England Foundation for the Arts where we got to meet so many cool local artists and spend some time with our fellow artists from the 2019 Nefa Cohort. December took our company members to cities near and far, from Mexico City to Ponce PR to Santo Domingo, from London to Dublin, from the Bay Area to Chicago and NYC where they were making work, reflecting on 2019 and planning for this very special upcoming 20th anniversary season. QUE que? WE ARE TURNING 20 friends, it still hasn't sunk in!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We kicked 2020 off with two vision board workshops at our studio and February has been dedicated to some updates to our space from painting the floors and glossing them to a new storefront look outside. We are preparing for a programming heavy #WOMENSHISTORY month followed by two World Premiere productions, tours, #creativerenewal #retreats, and podcasts! Can you believe 2020 is the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment? She was one of four members of the first Bronx-based all latinx poetry slam team, project x, with whom she competed at Northeast Regional Slam Competition. Her poetry has traveled as far as Aruba's "Poetry is an Island" festival, and she has been featured by People En Espanol, Bronx Museum of Arts, and Crooked Media to name a few. Danyeli is also the co-host of loose accents, a latinx podcast that highlights the immigrant experiences of the East and West coast. In addition to performing, Danyeli has been an avid advocate for immigrant rights, receiving the 2010 New York State Dream Activist Award from AFL-CIO. Her dedication also led her to become a candidate of the Vera Fellowship for Social Justice, DREAM Fellowship, and Immigrant Justice Fellowship. After finishing her third fellowship in August 2018, she moved to South Los Angeles where she currently resides and works full-time as an immigration and family law paralegal.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ About LIT LATINAS⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ LIT Latinas - part of our new ongoing Studio Chats series is Luna’s foray into the world or authors, books, and publishing.
