It isn’t easy to open up your heart to one person. ⠀ The fear that you will be misunderstood is always there. Still, it is incomparably more difficult to talk openly when you don’t know who will be listening to your words. ⠀ It isn’t easy for me to talk about my writing journey in front of a wider audience. I always think about people wishing to hear only success stories. Such as we see in movies. A talented person gets rejected but doesn’t give up, and in an hour and a half they get their big chance, and we rejoice watching their triumph. ⠀ In real life, it seldom happens this way. ⠀ First, success generally takes longer than half an hour to knock at one’s door. For most, years and even decades pass before they start enjoying some fruits of their hard labour. ⠀ Second, not everyone who strives for success finds it. ⠀ That’s where the topic of being an indie author becomes difficult. For us indie authors to talk about it. Have you felt like quitting all at once and throwing in the towel? Have you been in a place where you felt trapped and it isn’t where you have imagined to be and yet by circumstance there you are trying to make sense of why you’re there? Have you wanted to not care at all and whatever will be, will be? Hey there! If one of those ever resonates with you, I hope you won’t feel bad of having those heavy feelings. After all, at some point struggles show us the frailty of humanity. BUT—it doesn’t have to end in struggling. One of the stories I love in the Bible is when coming across the word, “but”. “…But David found strength in the LORD his God.” (1 Samuel 30:6) This conjunction connotes a change of story of the well known man of God, David. And mostly, the narrative from struggling becomes a feat of strength. If you feel like abandoning ship and giving up, If you feel like nothing’s making sense, And if you feel like you cannot make it through another day, Know that these are hard heavy feelings but there is a way out. Hold on, don’t let go, just put one foot in front of the other. There will be the light at the end of the dark tunnel. Don’t give up and don’t give in for this won’t last. If it’s not good and beautiful, God’s not done with you yet. Beloved, when all else fails, know that God’s strength does not. You’re gonna be okay. One thing I really struggle to do is to give myself time to think. In fact, as someone who despises being bored, I ensure I'm always so well occupied, I never have any time to just think. Whether it's watching Netflix in the background while I'm getting ready in the mornings, listening to podcasts on my commute, or endlessly scrolling Instagram in the evenings, I'm constantly distracted. And it's only recently I've realised how problematic this is for my writing. Most of writing is thinking. Thinking about your characters, thinking about your story, thinking about the best way to say something, to do something... Thinking about where you want to go with a plot point and why. Thinking about how you want your reader to feel. Thinking comes well before there are any words on a page, and yet, I've given myself no time to think about my book beyond the initial idea. And then I wonder why, when I sit down to write, the words don't flow out of me at lightning speed! So I'm going to try and give myself more time to think. More time to mull things over. More time to people watch. More time to be inspired. And see where it all takes me... One year ago this month, I was diagnosed with a connective tissue disease and it explained years of symptoms, giving me much needed validation. I’m so grateful for friends and family - especially my husband - who were there for me during this difficult time. It’s a long road ahead and we’ve caught it before it progressed to complete immobilization. But with medically necessary interventions, I’m confident I can overcome the challenges before me. Last week, I saw my care team - five appointments in a single day - and am so grateful to be near one of the greatest medical centers in the world with doctors who are compassionate and understand the unique challenges of this disease. Even in trials, there are blessings. I’m still standing.
