All through my Mother’s final illness and her eventual death last June, a period of some two years, I have been struggling with this piece. I feel that I’m finally approaching some sort of resolution on a number of levels. This is a stylized representation of The Big Dipper. I imagined myself peering thru an AstroGlobe into some imaginary Maine landscape. The work is a detail of a 48 x 24 acrylic on a birch panel. The largest star on the handle, Alioth, is made appropriately important. My Mother liked this painting in its various permutations. I am committed to its completion.

"Strand". Oil on panel, 12" x 9". One of the things about living in Maine is that the landscape has been so painted. It's Wyeth country, Neil Welliver country, Winslow Homer country, so much territory has been taken, and the imitators trade in clichés. But they don't tend to paint Maine in the winter or early spring, when it's dour and all the values merge together into a midtone gray. To get any shapes at all you have to nail the dawn or the dusk, and if you can get some water with sky reflection you can get some movement. I live in the mountains, where you have to climb a mountain to see much sky. I like painting big skies; the grand movements of enormous clouds remind me of large processes happening in the world and in history. Here's me pumping in color that just wasn't there. It's low saturation but in real life it was *very* low saturation. This image is from when I drove the three hours to Acadia (and three hours back) and of course the park and the ocean roads were closed because it was still winter so I drove up the coast looking for anything worth painting. I've done that twice. Theoretically the park opens in two days. I'm looking forward to ocean views. Here's the palette: titanium white cadmium yellow light Sennelier's cold Naples yellow brown ochre French raw sienna raw, burnt and green umbers Cassel earth ivory black (just for the sky to nudge yellow towards green) hematite (for the violets) ultramarine blue Most of these colors are @rublevcolours. #mainelandscape #oilpaintings #mainepainter
