In observance of National Be Someone Day (July 21) , I challenge each of us to take at least ten seconds this month to make a difference in a child’s life. Although the day is specifically designated as a day to commit to reporting child abuse, any way you can make a difference in a child's life is important. In observance of National Be Someone Day, I repost "Dear Joey" by Donald W. Kruse. The publisher's overview shares, "A young boy named Joey befriends an elderly woman named Mrs. Benson who is a widow and lives all alone. The boy visits the woman almost daily, doing various chores for her: mowing the lawn; raking leaves; washing windows; etc. The friendly Mrs. Benson treats Joey with love and kindness and rewards him with lemonade, ice tea, chocolate cake, watermelon, and her homecooked fried chicken. Which way has your week gone? Up or down? My week has generally been UP.. I love the fact that after 25 years in education (10 years as an assistant headteacher) I’m back supporting schools on the pastoral side of education. Back at the heart of a school, back on the front line. The front line is where a lot of the negatives take place, a lot of the upset, the anger, the uncertainty, the tears and the trauma occurs. The side of education that is not seen (all the time) by the public, the parents of the ‘good ones’ and the people of a safe, happy and supportive community. I have to say… It’s been a fabulous experience going back to my roots, and reminding myself why I became a teacher and how I can now pass on my advice to schools and to the amazing staff I work alongside; Reminding ourselves that we are making a difference … we are helping the most vulnerable, the most in need to get back up after the knocks, even if it’s little steps, as they still make the wrong choices sometimes - but these are the students that will remember the great teachers, the great adults that picked them up and never gave up on them. Those little steps are progress and we are not after perfection, we are after the children most in need to be guided and to seek out those adults that are there for them, their cheerleaders on all those ‘little things’ they get right, and for them to know they have an adult in their life that believes in them and knows they can do this… and that they WILL DO IT! Never underestimate the power of staff that work day in, day out for our future generation.
