First long cycle trip of 2024. Was waiting for the weather to get better ,as it has been cold and rainy here and 8 degrees Celsius, etc. Today, the sun was out and 18 degrees, so after lunch, we thought we would go for cycling. When we were I India, I used to say I wanted to have a Martini ( cocktail) ofcourse we had vodka, gin, etc, but no vermouth. So the idea of making one was always cancelled.Two days ago, Hans had gone for rehearsals in the evening, and o decided will make a vodka Martini. Happy Ugadi/ Gudi Padwa to everyone 🙂 Wishing everyone a very Happy and Prosperous New Year! This day marks the beginning of a new year in the Hindu calendar in India. It is celebrated in many parts of India during this time and is called by various names. In the frame: Karjikai ( or , also called as Gujiya or Karanji) This is a deep fried sweet dish made with flour with a sweet filling that has semolina, Dried coconut, poppy seeds, Sesame seeds and sugar. Ingredients for the dough: 2 cups Flour 1/4 cup Rava 1 tsp salt 4 Tablespoons Ghee Water as needed to make the dough and let it sit for some time till the filling is ready and cools down. Apply some oil over the dough and keep it covered. Filling 1 cup Roasted Semolina 1 table spoon Ghee 2 tsps Poppy seeds 2 tsps Sesame seeds 1 cup Dry coconut shavings 3/ 4 Cup sugar or jaggery Heat ghee in a pan and roast poppy seeds, sesame seeds and dry coconut shaving together. Then add the roasted rava into it. Add 3/4 cup jaggery power or sugar as per your choice of sweetness. Roast it and turn off the flame. Once cooled, roll small balls of the dough and flatten them into small circles. Put some of the filling in half of the circle and fold it into a semicircle and seal the edges. Brush a little water in between the edges and then seal it as shown in the video with your fingers. Fry these half moon shaped dumplings in medium hot oil till the outside is slightly brown and crisp. Recipe video to follow soon. Last traditional Sunday breakfast of 2023, freshly bought from our local baker. Does anyone have a perfect whole year. Like every year, we had high and lows . Although one would prefer just high but then life is never that smooth. We travelled a bit , but one good thing we did this year was taking a museum pass in February for a year , and although the plan was to go visit a lot of museums, but could only manage 9 museums. Christmas Eve 2023 looked like this. Menu was Bubbles , Appetizers was Smoked salmon with avocado cream, Smoked trout with apples, wasabi, small Volauvent with feta, Spinach and ham. Best was the starter, which was crab ,Prawns on a bed of Artichoke hearts with a mango sauce. The main dish was Guinea fowl with port wine sauce, croquettes, etc, and dessert is the only thing I didn't make. I bought ice cream cake. Dinner started by 18:30 hrs and ended after midnight. Sunday dinner was homemade Ramsons ( wild garlic) pesto . Pesto was made in the summer time when I got a whole bunch of ramsons from Hans uncle's garden and kept in portions in the freezer. The weather is getting colder and making of hearty soup is back. As most of you know I do make a lot of soup and this German peas soup is one of our favourite . I make it with German bacon and sausages, if you ate a vegetarian just omit them and still you have a delicious soup. Recipe. 500 gm dry split peas soaked overnight. 100 gm bacon chopped 3 tbsp oil 2 Onions chopped 2 fat leeks chopped 3 sticks of celery chopped. 1 heap tbsp of bean spice ( if you don't get this add dry Thyme, parsley ,etc) 1 tsp or more pepper piwder 3 litre of chicken or vegetable stock Sausages sliced 1 cup frozen peas I use a pressure cooker when I make soup. Add oil in the cooker, saute the bacon if using fry and then add all the chopped vegetables till they are translucent, add the soaked split peas, stock, the spices, Peper powder, close the steam pot and I cook it for 10 minutes . When the steam is fill released open and mix the soup with a hand mixer, add the sliced sausages abd frozen peas cook 2 minutes and serve. I love food like this with a lot of vegetables but Hans would be like all that vegetables in one meal 😬😬 I must say he has started eating more variety of vegetables after years of training 😅 than just green fresh salad, carrots etc. So I should not complain. This poke bowl I made for our lunch yesterday was fully enjoyed by both of us. In the asian store we get these spicemix packs for Nasi goreng and bami goreng and when I go I usually pick a pack or 2 of each. The are very handy to use, just have to dehydrate the spicemix and then add when one stir fry the noodles and fresh vegetables.I also added very thinly sliced pork meat. This was our lunch yesterday and it will be today's too. I know Shyama will never make puri herself so for today's lunch I thought I will make puri and channa, but yesterday evening when I was going soak channa I found out I only have brown chickpea so then I Soaked the yellow peas and decided I will make Ghungi ( curried yellow peas) from @bongeats youtube channel.
